[Principles for evaluating reactivity in the clinical picture of alcoholism and addiction during drug therapy].

Eighteen patients with chronic alcoholism, stages II-III were examined during tisercin treatment and medicamental interval. In patients with stage II alcoholism, perversion of the central neuronal tisercin effect was shown. Phenothiazines efficacy during abstinence period appeared to be linked with the perversion observed. Individual constant control of blood pressure, heart rate, acetylcholinesterase serum level, sleep function etc. during drug treatment is considered to be a perspective trend for an increase of toxicomania treatment efficacy.

[Various aspects of current treatment of patients with alcoholic delirium].

The study is based on the results of clinico-catamnestic evaluation of various methods (two kinds of placebo, antabuse, esperal, and a number of psychotropic drugs and their combinations) of treating 526 chronic alcoholics. Under study there were groups of the addicts comparable in the age, form and duration of the disease, and the degree of personality degradation. The data obtained show that it is preferable to individualize the application of the psychotropic means and combinations with regard to the changes in the addicts' psychics, characteristics of their premorbid personality, and the course of the disease in each particular case.

[Psychopharmacologic approach to studying various problems in slowly progressive schizophrenia].

The therapeutic response to psychotropic drugs was analyzed in 208 patients hospitalized at the Psychiatric Clinic of the Medical Faculty of the Purkinje University (Brno, Czechoslovakia). The patients showed symptoms characteristic of borderline states. The examinations were carried out with the use of modified scale SCL-90 supplemented with 90 additional signs. It was found that the patients with slowly progressing schizophrenia responded to the psychotropic drugs in a way differing from that observed in the patients with the borderline states. It is suggested that patients with slowly progressing schizophrenia have a specific biological background of the disease that determines the type of the response.

[Pharmacological influences on the brain level and transport of GABA. II) Effect of various psychoactive drugs on brain level and uptake of GABA].

The effects of some psychoactive drugs on the level and uptake of GABA in the mouse brain was studied using well standardized procedures, mainely the silica-gel cromatography for determining the GABA content and the brain slices for measuring GABA uptake. It was found that levomepromazine, sulpiride, haloperidol and amytryptiline were without effects on the cerebral level of GABA; it was also found that these drugs do not influence the rates of uptake of GABA by mouse brain slices. Such results do indicate that the psychoactive drugs studied are without effects on the level and uptake of GABA in the brain.

[Inhalation of levopromazine (Nozinan) in the treatment of status asthmaticus].

Levomepromazine reduces histamine-induced bronchial hyperresponsiveness in asthmatics without significant sedation. We present two patients with acute asthma refractory to conventional therapy, who were treated with inhalation of 2.5 mg levomepromazine. Until controlled studies have been done, we suggest that inhalation of levomepromazine be restricted to patients with asthma refractory to conventional therapy.

[The effect of neuroleptics on blood proteins during development of toxic cerebral edema-brain swelling].

Simulation of toxic brain edema-swelling allowed one to analyze the dynamics of blood protein alteration in presence of various neuroleptics. Alterations in blood protein fractions correlated with dynamics of nervous tissue impairments. All the drugs studied exhibited similar antiswelling action involving the gamma-globulin sub-system activation. At the same time, the neuroleptics with activating and depriving effects demonstrated an oppositely directed influence on blood albumins.

[Hypothermia caused by neuroleptics. 2 case reports and review of the literature].

The present paper discusses appearance and course of neuroleptic induced hypothermia of a 36 years old woman suffering from periodic catatonia and a 38 years old seriously mentally handicapped man. Analysis of clinical studies and pharmacological tests with animals about body temperature changes caused by neuroleptics yields that these may lead to hypothermia as well as hyperthermia, depending on individual disposition and dose, which is mainly a result of their effect through dopaminergic neurons of the hypothalamus, which controls thermoregulation, and of their influence on vasomotoric mechanisms of vessels of the skin. Though hyperthermic changes are more hazardous and occur more frequently hypothermia by neuroleptic agents is clinically relevant as shown by the summarizing presentation of previously released case reports: hypothermia is found at neuroleptic medicated healthy volunteers and at psychiatric patients with or without physical illness, at which hypothyreosis and impair of the brain seem to represent special risks.

[Analysis of combined phenothiazine-opiate poisoning].

Report about 2 death cases due to an overdosage of phenothiacine derivates. The EMIT-test showed positive results concerning opiates for both cases. But morphine only was detected in one case by a fluorimetric method. The EMIT-test for opiates can show positive results in error, if there exist phenothiacines in the specimen at the same time.
