Metal complexes with a new N(4)O(3) amine pendant-armed macrocyclic ligand: synthesis, characterization, crystal structures, and fluorescence studies.

The synthesis of a new oxaaza macrocyclic ligand, L, derived from O(1),O(7)-bis(2-formylphenyl)-1,4,7-trioxaheptane and tren containing an amine terminal pendant arm, and its metal complexation with alkaline earth (M = Ca(2+), Sr(2+), Ba(2+)), transition (M = Co(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+)), post-transition (M = Pb(2+)), and Y(3+) and lanthanide (M = La(3+), Er(3+)) metal ions are reported. Crystal structures of [H(2)L](ClO(4))(2).3H(2)O, [PbL](ClO(4))(2), and [ZnLCl](ClO(4)).H(2)O are also reported. In the [PbL] complex, the metal ion is located inside the macrocyclic cavity coordinated by all N(4)O(3) donor atoms while, in the [ZnLCl] complex, the metal ion is encapsulated only by the nitrogen atoms present in the ligand. pi-pi interactions in the [H(2)L](ClO(4))(2).3H(2)O and [PbL](ClO(4))(2) structures are observed. Protonation and Zn(2+), Cd(2+), and Cu(2+) complexation were studied by means of potentiometric, UV-vis, and fluorescent emission measurements. The 10-fold fluorescence emission increase observed in the pH range 7-9 in the presence of Zn(2+) leads to L as a good sensor for this biological metal in water solution.

[Interaction of divalent cadmium ions with nucleotides and native DNA].

Complex formation of Cd2+ ions with 2'-deoxy-5'-phosphates of canonical bases and their riboanalogues in water solution is studied by the method of differential UV-spectroscopy. It is stated that the atoms coordinating Cd2+ in complexes are N7 of dGMP and GMP, dAMP and AMP, N1 of adenine derivatives, N3 of dCMP. No interaction with base heteroatoms of UMP and dTMP is found. O2' present in the structure of the sugar ring has a weak influence on the Cd2+ ion binding to purine nucleotides. It manifests itself strongly in the complexes with cytosine derivatives: cadmium does not interact with N3 of CMP and poly-C practically. In the last case O2 is a centre coordinating Cd2+ ions. The interaction with this atom induces the melting of polynucleotide helical parts. At the high cadmium concentration poly-C forms compact particles. The main centre binding Cd2+ ions in DNA is N7 of guanines. Noncooperative interaction with these centres results in the internal protonation of N3C of GC-pairs. This is not followed with the disordering of the DNA helical structure.

Structural basis of carbohydrate recognition by the lectin LecB from Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The crystal structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa fucose-specific lectin LecB was determined in its metal-bound and metal-free state as well as in complex with fucose, mannose and fructopyranose. All three monosaccharides bind isosterically via direct interactions with two calcium ions as well as direct hydrogen bonds with several side-chains. The higher affinity for fucose is explained by the details of the binding site around C6 and O1 of fucose. In the mannose and fructose complexes, a carboxylate oxygen atom and one or two hydroxyl groups are partly shielded from solvent upon sugar binding, preventing them from completely fulfilling their hydrogen bonding potential. In the fucose complex, no such defects are observed. Instead, C6 makes favourable interactions with a small hydrophobic patch. Upon demetallization, the C terminus as well as the otherwise rigid metal-binding loop become more mobile and adopt multiple conformations.

Ruthenium dihydrogen complexes with wide bite angle diphosphines.

The wide bite angle diphosphines homoxantphos (10,11-dihydro-4,5,-bis(diphenylphosphino)dibenzo[b,f]oxepine), sixantphos (4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)-10,10-dimethylphenoxasilin), and thixantphos (2,8-dimethyl-4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenoxathiin) were used to prepare cis[MH(2)(diphosphine)(2)] complexes (1a-f) by reaction of [Ru(cod)(cot)] (cod = cyclo-octa-1,5-diene, cot = cyclo-octa-1,3,5-triene) with 2 equiv of the diphosphine under dihydrogen pressure. The electronic properties of the thixantphos ligand were varied. Complexes 1a-f can be protonated with HBF(4) or CF(3)COOH to yield hydrido(dihydrogen) complexes cis[MH(H(2))(diphosphine)(2)](+) (2a-f), which were characterized by VT (variable temperature) NMR and T(1) measurements. These complexes show fast hydrogen atom exchange between the eta(2)-H(2) and the terminal hydride at all temperatures studied. They are thermally unstable toward dihydrogen loss yielding the cationic monohydride complexes cis[MH(diphosphine)(2)](+) (3a-f). Coordination of the eta(2)-H(2) is dominated by sigma --> d donation, and hence, the H-H distance is hardly influenced by the electronic properties of the ligands.

Diaquamalonato(1,10-phenanthroline)zinc(II).

In the crystal structure of the title complex, [Zn(C3H2O4)(C12H8N2)(H2O)2], the Zn(II) atom displays a distorted octahedral geometry, being coordinated by two N atoms from the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand, two O atoms from different carboxylate groups of the chelating malonate dianion and two O atoms of cis water molecules. The complex molecules are linked to form a three-dimensional supramolecular array by both hydrogen-bonding interactions between coordinated water molecules and the uncoordinated carboxylate O atoms of neighboring molecules, and aromatic pi-pi stacking interactions between neighboring phenanthroline rings.

The state of copper in human serum: evidence for an amino acid-bound fraction.

In addition to copper bound to ceruloplasmin and to albumin, there is a third small fraction of copper in human serum that is bound to amino acids. The amino acid-bound fraction of copper is in equilibrium with albumin-bound copper, and both fractions are probably in equilibrium with ionic copper. Of the 23 amino acids that are known to be in human serum, a substantial number were shown (in physiological concentrations) to compete effectively with albumin for the binding of copper. In this respect, histidine had the most marked effect followed by glutamine, threonine, cystine, and others. The effect of the combined presence of 23 amino acids on the state of copper in human serum could not be explained on the basis of their individual abilities to compete with albumin for the binding of copper. It is suggested that copper may also be present in serum in the form of mixed amino acid-copper complexes consisting of one atom of copper and two different amino acids. Under normal conditions, histidine is the amino acid primarily involved in the formation of mixed amino acid-copper complexes in serum. In combination with histidine and copper, threonine, glutamine, and asparagine are the other amino acids that are most likely to be the third members of these mixed complexes. The first binding site for copper on human albumin is different from subsequent ones in that its binding affinity to copper is much higher. We propose that the amino acid-bound fraction of copper in serum may have a physiological role in the biological transport of copper.

Aluminium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate as an efficient catalyst for the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of unactivated olefins: experimental and theoretical approaches.

The Al(OTf)(3)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of unactivated unsaturated alcohols was studied from experimental and theoretical points of view. A series of cyclic ethers was obtained in excellent yields and regioselectivities. This catalyst system provides one of the most straightforward routes to cyclic ethers with Markovnikov-type regioselectivity under mild conditions. Theoretical and NMR studies were carried out in order to better determine the mechanism of this reaction. The NMR studies were in agreement with preferential complexation of Al(OTf)(3) to the oxygen atom of the unsaturated alcohol, but did not exclude complexation to the double bond of the alcohol. Theoretical calculations indicated strong acidification of the hydroxyl proton when Al(OTf)(3) was complexed to the alcohol oxygen atom. A plausible catalytic cycle for the Al(OTf)(3)-catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of unactivated olefins is proposed.

Molecular motions in the solid state: the thermochromic nitro-nitrito Interconversion in nickel(II) bis(diamine) complexes.

The NO(2)(-) ion, in the trans-octahedral [Ni(II)(N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine)(2)(NO(2))(2)](H(2)O) complex, coordinates the metal through the nitrogen atom (nitro form). On heating the solid complex, the anion rotates to give nitrito coordination (oxygen bound), according to a reversible process. The coordination mode of NO(2)(-) to Ni(II) is related to the steric interplay between the anion and the alkyl substituents on the diamine.

Energy density distribution in bridged cobalt complexes.

In the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM), the charge density is usually a suitable tool for bonding analyses. However, problems arise in some cases. So, no direct Co-Co bond is found in Co2(CO)8. It is shown that the energy density gives deeper insight into the bonding properties. This is demonstrated for Co2(CO)8, Co4(CO)12, and Co2(CO)6(InMe)2. The strategy is not restricted to transition metal compounds; it should be useful to identify any weak bonding or antibonding interactions.

Neutral pyridyl-functionalized C,N-ortho-chelated aminoaryl platinum(II) corner building blocks for application in coordination reactions.

Two homoleptic pyridyl-functionalized C,N-ortho-chelating aminoaryl platinum(II) complexes, cis-[Pt(eta(2)-C,N)] (3a,b), were prepared via an unconventional method involving the initial synthesis of a bromide-functionalized C,N-chelating aminoaryl platinum(II) precursor complex 8, to which subsequently pyridyl groups were attached via a Suzuki-Miyaura C-C coupling reaction. The electron-donating properties of the pyridyl nitrogen atoms of the resulting complexes (3a,b) were used in complexation reactions with monocationic NCN-pincer (NCN = [C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2-)2,6]-) platinum(II) (11a) and palladium(II) (12a) nitrate complexes [M(NCN)(NO3)], thereby obtaining four trimetallic coordination complexes 16-19. The difference in the pyridine-metal coordination behavior between platinum and palladium was studied by varying the ratios of the reagents and by variable-temperature NMR experiments. IR and Raman analyses of 11a and 12a were performed to determine the coordination behavior of the nitrate counteranion, and it was found that both NO3- and H2O coordinate to the metal centers. The crystal structure determinations of free pyridyl complex 3a, [Pt(NCN)(NO3)] (11a), and [Pt(NCN)(NO3)].(H2O) (11b), as well as the crystal structure of trisplatinum coordination complex 16, are reported.

[The cytomorphological characteristics of the epithelial layer of the gastric and duodenal mucosa in those who worked in the cleanup of the aftermath of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The complex of cytomorphological changes (dystrophy, dysregeneration, dysplasia, metaplasia) and dysfunction of gastric and duodenal mucosa epithelium were found in 79 liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster. It was shown that the reparative capability of superficial epithelium was retained. The increased number of abnormal mitoses was observed. The highest proliferative activity of duodenal epithelium reflects the intensity of reparative processes in duodenum at acute phase of peptic ulcer disease.

[The genetic effects in the somatic cells of persons working under chronic irradiation of different intensities after the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

A complex genetic study of two groups from of Chernobyl NPP personnel (from "Shelter" unit and 3rd Block) has been carried out using classical cytogenetic and GPA methods. The first group was the most vulnerable from the viewpoint of accumulated dose (exceeding 25 cGy for the moment of study). Positive correlation between individual and group frequencies of cytogenetic markers of irradiation (stable and unstable chromosomes aberrations) and NO mutations in the GPA locus was found.

Atomic force and electron microscopy of high molecular weight circular DNA complexes with synthetic oligopeptide trivaline.

Intramolecular compact structures formed by high molecular weight circular superhelical DNA molecules due to interaction with synthetic oligopeptide trivaline (1) were studied by atomic force and electron microscopy. Three DNA preparations were used: plasmids pTbol, pRX10 and cosmid 27,877, with sizes 6,120 bp, 10,500 bp and 44,890 bp respectively. Plasmid pTbo1 and pRX10 preparations along with monomers contained significant amount of dimers and trimers. Main structures in all preparations observed were compact particles, which coincide in their appearance and compaction coefficient (3,5-3,7) with triple rings described earlier. The size and structure characteristics of triple rings and other compact particles on atomic force images in general coincide with those obtained by EM (2). AFM (3) images allow to get additional information about the ultrastructural organization and arrangement of DNA fibers within the compact structures. Along with triple rings in pTbol and pRX10-TVP complexes significant amount of compact structures were observed having the shape of two or three compact rings attached to each other by a region of compact fibre. Basing on the data of contour length measurements and the shape of the particles it was concluded that these structures were formed due to compaction of dimeric and trimeric circular DNA molecules. Structures consisting of several attached to each other triple rings were not found for pTbol, pRX10 monomers or cosmid preparations--TVP complexes where only single triple rings were observed. The conclusion is made that initiation of compact fibre formation within the circular molecules depends on the primary structure and for dimeric or trimeric circular molecules two or three compaction initiation points are present, located in each monomer unit within one circular DNA molecule. The nucleotide sequence dependent compaction mechanism providing independent compaction of portions of one circular molecule can be of interest for understanding of DNA compaction processes in vivo.

Atomic scale modelling of the cores of dislocations in complex materials part 2: applications.

In an accompanying article, we have described a methodology for the simulation of dislocations in structurally complex materials. We illustrate the applicability of this method through studies of screw dislocations in a structurally simple ionic ceramic (MgO), a molecular ionic mineral (forsterite, Mg2SiO4), a semi-ionic zeolite (siliceous zeolite A) and a covalent molecular crystalline material (the pharmaceutical, orthorhombic paracetamol-II). We focus on the extent of relaxation and the structure of the dislocation cores and comment on similarities and points of disparity between these materials. It is found that the magnitude of the relaxation varies from material to material and does not simply correlate with the magnitude of the principal elastic constants in an easily predictable fashion, or with the size of the cohesive lattice energy or length of the Burgers vector, which emphasises the need to model the non-linear forces and atomic structure of the core.

Hydrogen bond detection.

In this Article we extend the idea of detecting a hydrogen bond solely on one single quantum chemically determined descriptor. We present an improvement of the method introduced by Reiher et al. (Theor. Chim. Acta 2001, 106, 379), who mapped the strength of the hydrogen bond onto an easily accessible quantity, namely, the two-center shared-electron number sigma(HA). First, we show that the linear dependence between the interaction energy from the supermolecular approach and sigma(HA) is valid for a test set of about 120 hydrogen-bonded complexes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a classification according to acceptor atoms of the hydrogen-bonded complexes can give more accurate results. We thus recommend to detect hydrogen bonds with a specific acceptor atom according to our subset linear regression analysis. Case studies on alcohols and isolated base pairs and trimers from RNA and DNA show the utility of the detection criterion. The shared-electron number method yields that the strength of the N1...N3 hydrogen bond is in the range of 30 kJ/mol. Furthermore the A-U pair is indeed stronger bound than the A-T complex if environmental effects are incorporated in the calculations.

New disulfido molybdenum-manganese complexes exhibit facile addition of small molecules to the sulfur atoms.

The reaction of Mn(2)(CO)(7)(mu-S2) (1) with [CpMo(CO)(3)](2) (Cp = C(5)H(5)) and [Cp*Mo(CO)(3)](2) (Cp* = C(5)(CH(3))(5)) yielded the new mixed-metal disulfide complexes CpMoMn(CO)(5)(mu-S2) (2) and Cp*MoMn(CO)(5)(mu-S2) (3) by a metal-metal exchange reaction. Compounds 2 and 3 both contain a bridging disulfido ligand lying perpendicular to the Mo-Mn bond. The bond distances are Mo-Mn = 2.8421(10) and 2.8914(5) A and S-S = 2.042(2) and 1.9973(10) A for 2 and 3, respectively. A tetranuclear metal side product CpMoMn(3)(CO)(13)(mu3-S)(mu4-S) (4) was also isolated from the reaction of 1 with [CpMo(CO)(3)](2). Compounds 2 and 3 react with CO to yield the dithiocarbonato complexes CpMoMn(CO)(5)[mu-SC(=O)S] (5) and Cp*MoMn(CO)(5)[mu-SC(=O)S] (6) by insertion of CO into the S-S bond. Similarly, tert-butylisocyanide was inserted into the S-S bond of 2 and 3 to yield the complexes CpMoMn(CO)(5)[mu-S(C=NBu(t))S] (7) and Cp*MoMn(CO)(5)[mu-S(C=NBu(t))S] (8), respectively. Ethylene and dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate also inserted into the S-S bond of 2 and 3 at room temperature to yield the ethanedithiolato ligand bridged complexes CpMoMn(CO)(5)(mu-SCH(2)CH(2)S) (9), Cp*MoMn(CO)(5)(mu-SCH(2)CH(2)S) (10), CpMoMn(CO)(5)[mu-SC(CO(2)Me)=C(CO(2)Me)S] (11), and Cp*MoMn(CO)(5)[mu-SC(CO(2)Me)=C(CO(2)Me)S] (12). Allene was found to insert into the S-S bond of 2 by using one of its two double bonds to yield the complex CpMoMn(CO)(5)[mu-SCH(2)C(=CH(2))S] (13). The molecular structures of the new complexes 2-7 and 9-13 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Complex formation between cationically modified gold nanoparticles and DNA: an atomic force microscopic study.

Atomic force microscopy has been used for direct visualization of the wrapping of DNA around 30-nm-sized functionalized gold nanoparticles for the first time. The morphology of the complexes seems to be dictated by the relative concentration of the nanoparticles and DNA. A higher concentration of the former leads to the formation of a network of nanoparticles assembled on DNA. This assembly pattern seems to be significantly different from the manner in which cationically modified gold nanoparticles of smaller size (< 5 nm) arrange linearly on DNA, as shown in the literature. A DNA-gold nanoparticle can be developed as a model system for in vitro studies on the mechanism of DNA condensation and also for developing novel methods of nanoparticle self-assembly on the DNA template.

Measurement of inclusion complex formation between cyclophane and biological relevant amino acids using electrospray ionization, cold-spray ionization and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry.

The investigation of the host-guest complex formations between cyclophane (TGDMAP) (1) as a host and L-acidic amino acids such as L-glutamic acid (Glu) and L-aspartic acid (Asp) as guests was carried out using fast atom bombardment (FAB), electrospray ionization (ESI) and cold-spray ionization (CSI) mass spectrometry (MS). The stability constant (K(s)) values obtained by the three different MS methods almost agreed. However, the complex ion peaks of a novel cyclophane (CPCn) (2) with Glu and Asp were not observed in FAB-MS. Then, these host-guest complex formations by use of CSI-MS and ESI-MS was examined, as the results, these complex ion peaks were observed clearly and the measurement values by the two MS methods are mostly in agreement. It was concluded that ESI-MS and CSI-MS are available for the determination of K(s) value as well as FAB-MS.
