Trends in dental specialty education and practice, 1990-99.

Policy issues related to dental specialty education and practice have been the responsibility of the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Education and Licensure. In 2001, the council concluded a comprehensive study of the ADA-recognized dental specialties that included a review of specialty practice and the practice environment, membership in specialty organizations, requirements and trends in board certification, advances in research and technology related to each specialty, and trends in advanced specialty education. This paper provides an overview of the results of this study and the council's analysis of data and information provided by the dental specialty organizations and the ADA Survey Center with an emphasis on dental specialty education. The council concluded that none of the dental specialties should be considered for rerecognition, but identified concerns regarding the shortage of qualified faculty and educational program directors. As a result of the council's study, recommendations have been made to the dental specialty organizations and ADA-recognized dental specialty certifying boards that they continue to monitor the number of board-certified specialists and identify ways to increase the number of board-certified specialists.

Assessment of chair side techniques for composite resin restoration--a survey.

The purpose of this survey was to assess the awareness of dental practitioners relating to chair side techniques in restoring teeth with light cure composite. The survey package consisted of a consent form, a leaflet stating the rationale and purpose of the survey and the questionnaire. Randomised sample of dental surgeons in practice was selected. The collected data was then analysed. A 52% response was obtained. Gross deficiencies in practice technique were observed, especially related to parameters like isolation, etching, bond and composite application and finishing of the restoration. Significantly individual assessment of problems by dental practitioners was found to be different from objective rationale. It is suggested that adequate and periodic re-evaluation of techniques must be made by the general dental practitioners, through continuing dental education or workshops so as to achiEve optimum quality.

A retrospective study evaluating the use of the panoramic radiograph in endodontics.

Patients are referred to the endodontist to have root canal therapy performed to treat pulpal and periradicular diseases. Routinely, the only radiograph to accompany the patient is the periapical radiograph. This radiograph is inadequate in the detection of asymptomatic pathosis that may be present in other areas of the maxilla and mandible. The military's readiness mission requires that a panoramic radiograph be part of the patient's dental record. In addition to its use for personal identification purposes, the panoramic radiograph is an excellent diagnostic tool that can give the clinician an overall view of the dentoalveolar structures. This retrospective study evaluated randomly selected panoramic radiographs and recorded the presence of radiolucent and radiopaque areas not evident on a referral periapical radiograph. The results of this study found a 4.2% occurrence of undiagnosed pathosis following additional radiographs and clinical examinations.
