The blood levels of hydroxycorticosteroid-11 (11-HOCS) before and after dexamethasone, somatomedins, cholesterol, triglycerides, beta-lipoproteins and cholesterol of high-density lipoproteins were studied in 55 patients with prostatic adenoma and 75 cases of prostatic cancer. It was found that the hypothalamo-pituitary system is resistant to inhibition by dexamethasone in both groups, while elevation of absolute level of 11-HOCS was observed in cases of adenoma. Patients with prostatic cancer revealed a higher blood serum-somatomedin level. Triglyceride level was relatively higher, and diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia (type IIb and IV) were slightly more frequent in patients with prostatic adenoma. This was matched by a relatively higher level of cholesterol and more frequent hyperlipidemia type IIa in cancer patients.

It was shown that 7 to 10 days' injection of lipoproteins (LPs), isolated from the human blood serum according to Burstein and Scholnick method, induces significant inhibition of the rat thyroid iodine-absorbing function. Alpha-LPs exert more evident inhibiting effect than beta + pre- beta-LPs, and beta + pre- beta-LPs from the oncological patients' blood serum have more pronounced inhibiting effect comparatively to the same fraction of the donors; blood serum. 10-days' LP injection is accompanied by thyroxine inhibition and iodothyrozine/iodothyronine ratio rise in the thyroid tissue. In the experiments in vitro and in vivo several Lp fractions decreased thyrotropin-stimulating effect on AMP accumulation in the rat thyroid gland. Possible mechanisms of LP action on the thyroid function are discussed. The study of LP effect on the thyroid function in homologous system is necessary. It is suggested that hyperlipidemia (hyperlipoproteinemia) is one of the factors, contributing to the thyroid function decrease with age and in patients with malignant tumors.

In 107 patients with chronic pain syndromes, transcutaneous electrostimulation by an apparatus ELIMAN -101 was used in conjunction with drug treatment and physiotherapy. On the basis of a complex of estimation tests, the patients studied were divided into three groups depending on the degree of the analgesic effect. A good analgesic response was obtained in 65.4% of the patients, satisfactory in 28.1%, unsatisfactory in 6.5%. It is considered advisable to include the method of transcutaneous electrostimulation into the regimen of the treatment for chronic pain syndromes.

In 295 patients in the early postoperative period anesthesia was performed by means of percutaneous electrostimulation with a new national apparatus Eliman-101. The authors note high efficiency of such analgesia in 63,4% of the patients, satisfactory results were obtained in 32,3%. No sufficient anesthesia was achieved in 13 patients (4,3%). There were no side effects and complications.

Female rats were treated with buformin, phenytoin, polypeptide pineal extract, L-DOPA or buformin combined with L-DOPA during 3 weeks before intravenous injections of DMBA (1.5 mg 6 times with one-week intervals) over a period of carcinogen injections and after it till the animals' death. The overall tumour incidence in the control group was 97%, while in buformin, phenytoin, pineal extract, L-DOPA and buformin + L-DOPA treated groups it amounted to 55, 71, 80, 50 and 62%, respectively (P < 0.05). The incidence of mammary adenocarcinoma amounted to 81, 36, 55, 26, 25 and 19%, respectively (P < 0.05). The mechanisms of the similar effects the drugs belonging to different classes produce on chemical carcinogenesis are discussed.

The literature data suggest the promotion of tumor cell implantation by chorionic gonadotropin. This hypothesis stimulated a study on the effect of antichorionic serum on the growth of Ehrlich solid carcinoma. An immune serum to chorionic gonadotropin obtained by immunization of rabbits was injected into mice with Ehrlich carcinoma transplanted under the skin of the back. Intramuscular injections of 0.1 ml were given twice a day for 14-21 days. A 45% inhibition of tumor growth (p less than 0.05) was observed after injection of serum with a high titer of antibodies to chorionic gonadotropin (1:10,000). It was matched by a much lower inhibition (21%), following injection of a low-titer serum (1:100). These results may be used as a rationale for development of an anahormone of chorionic gonadotropin for active immunization against chorionic gonadotropin.

On the example of diabetes mellitus there was shown a close interrelationship between the blood lymphocytes and monocytes function, on the one hand, and the disturbances of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism--on the other hand. Patients were examined both during the decompensated stage of diabetes and during the compensated one as a result of treatment. A reduction of lipid and 11-oxycorticosteroid level, a rise in T-lymphocyte percentage, an increase of the lymphocyte blasttransformation reaction, and of lysosomal and phagocytic activity of monocytes followed the treatment.
