[Effect of phenformin on fetal mass in rats previously immunized with an extract of homologous thyroid gland].
Rats immunized with homologous thyroid antigen 9-27 weeks before delivery manifest an increase in the mean weight of fetus as compared with normal pregnant rats. Administration of phenformin (7.5 mg/day per os) during immunization and over 30 days after its discontinuance led to a significant weight reduction as compared with immunized animals not given phenformin. The latter's effect became more potent with an increase in the interval between immunization discontinuance and delivery. Prophylaxis and cure of the latent and evident autoimmune lesions of the thyroid gland during childhood and juvenescence are regarded as approaches to the prevention of endocrine and metabolic disorders favouring large fetus delivery.

[Inhibiting effect of phenformin (phenethyl biguanide) on the growth of Ehrlich carcinoma].
Phenformin was shown to inhibit the rate of the Ehrlich carcinoma cell growth both in solid and ascitic forms of the tumor. The effect of phenformin on the tumor was eliminated by a diet containing high level of fats. The supernatant from the 18-hour culture of splenic cells, obtained from carcinoma-bearing mice treated by phenformin, inhibited phagocytosis of normal macrophages to a less extent compared with tumor-bearing mice which were not given phenformin. A peritoneal exudate from these mice was less effective in suppressing normal macrophages adhesiveness compared with untreated tumor-bearing mice.
[Prognosis of breast cancer patients with large-fetus birth weights in their history].
Under study were the data on a 5-year survival in a group of 154 breast cancer patients (treated in 1970-1971) which were evaluated versus the weight of their infants. A worse prognosis was registered in patients with high-weight births (4 kg and more) in their case histories. Such correlation was observed only in patients aged 50 years and more ("old-age cancer") and in patients with stage III of the disease. A probable combination of hormonal-metabolic disturbances which influence the etiopathogenesis and prognosis of some neoplasms and the advisability of timely correction of such disturbances for prevention of malignant tumors and improvement of treatment of cancer patients are discussed.

[Distribution of 131I-labelled growth hormone in mice of high and low cancer lines].
It was shown that an uptake of the labeled STH in the mammary tissue of mice C3H is twice as that as in mice C57Bl, and by 40% higher than in mice CC57Br. In mammary tumors of mice C3H the label uptake was 30% higher than in mammary glands without any visible tumor. These facts may evidence that the hormone of growth take part in providing the conditions which contribute to the origination and development of mammary gland tumors.
[Genetic-metabolic model of cancer cell behavior].
It is suggested that the transforming protein (type pp60) induce "insulinization" of the cell membrane. It is mostly due to this effect that the cell sensitivity to insulin and insulin-like factors of the body internal medium is enhanced, which in turn results in the increased glucosa transport into cell. The transforming protein is also supposed to increase the activity of the glycolysis key enzymes by phosphorylating them. The presence of these two effects seems to be sufficient enough to explain "the biochemical behaviour" of the cancerous cell.

[Comparison of metabolic and immunologic indices in breast cancer].
A correlation was made between the complex of metabolic indices (the concentration of free fatty acids, cholesterol, beta-lipoproteids and triglycerids in blood) and the complex of immunological indices (the number of T-lymphocytes, blastogenic reaction of lymphocytes, lysosomal and phagocytic activity of macrophages) in healthy females of two age groups and in breast cancer patients. There were examined 20 healthy females aged 18-29, 19 healthy females aged 40-78 and 37 primary breast cancer patients, and also 30 patients being in the state of remission after the radical treatment, their age was analogous to that of the second control age group. It was stated that healthy females with age show a parallel worsening of metabolic and immunological indices (the correlation coefficient being equal to -0.57 and -0.56 accordingly (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.02) that corresponds to the phenomenon of metabolic immunodepression. The same phenomenon is observed in breast cancer patients at the stage of clinical remission (r = 0.42, P = 0.02). Contrary, in primary patients despite analogously decreased immunity the correlation coefficient was -0.23. Consequently, the mechanism of immunosuppressive effect of the tumor seems not to be related to the changed concentration in blood of the indices under study.
[Effect of fenformin on the blastomogenic action of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in rats].
Weekly administrations of SDMH to female rats were shown to decrease the tolerance to glucose loading, to increase the cholesterol, triglyceride and insulin levels in serum. Antidiabetic biguanide phenoformin decreases the multiplicity of SDMH-induced colon cancers and decreases their mean square value. The normalizing influence of phenoformin on the cancrophilia syndrome is suggested to be the main factor of its antitumor effect
[Effect of phenformin and miscleron on the blood somatomedin activity level in breast cancer].
It was shown that in patients with breast cancer and cancer of the corpus uteri in the presence of hypercholesterinemia and hypertriglyceridemia the level of blood somatomedin activity would be 3--5 times the control values, being 3.04 +/- 0.73% unit/ml in breast cancer patients and 2.20 +/- 0.61 unit/ml in those with endometrial cancer. An antidiabetic drug phenformin (50--100 mg/day) as well as an antidiabetic drug miscleron (1--1.5 g/day), used during 7--24 weeks, were found to result in the reduced level of the somatomedin activity in breast cancer patients being in the stage of remission (1.94 +/- 0.36 unit/ml before the treatment, 0.94 +/- 0.17 unit/ml after it).
[Effect of miskleron (clofibrate) on dimethylhydrazine induction of intestinal tumors in rats].
Intestinal tumors were induced in male rats by dimethylhydrazine (14 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously once a week during 20 weeks). Part of animals received clofibrat per os in a dose of 25 mg a day 5 times a week. Clofibrat did not influence the frequency of the development of intestinal tumors but significantly decreased the number of medium-size and large tumors. The possible mechanisms of clofibrat action as well as the use of clofibrat and some related agents in oncology are discussed.
[The relation of a number of hormonal indices to risk factors for IHD and its prevalence based on the data from a large population study].
Relevance of IHD risk factors and hormone concentrations (insulin, estradiol, testosterone, prolactin, LH, FSH, TTH and hydrocortisone) to IHD incidence was studied in 1200 men. Multivariate statistical analysis demonstrated that only a small number of hormonal indices are associated with main lipid and nonlipid risk factors. The relationships exist between systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and hydrocortisone, between TTH and total cholesterol, SAP and age, estradiol, testosterone and age. Significant independent associations were found between IHD prevalence and age (R = 0.140, 3 = 0.000), SAP (R = 0.130, P.0.001), HDLP cholesterol (R = -0.082, P = 0.007), height (R = -0.078, P = 0.010), insulin (R = 0.067, P = 0.035), standard deviation of estradiol from median value (R = 0.083, P = 0.017). The findings confirm a great role of high SAP in the development of IHD, a significant and independent association of high insulin levels with IHD prevalence, the presence of nonlinear relation of estradiol concentration to IHD occurrence in males.
