Integrating Application Programs for Bioinformatics Using a Web Browser.

We have constructed a general framework for integrating application programs with control through a local Web browser. This method is based on a simple inter-process message function from an external process to application programs. Commands to a target program are prepared in a script file, which is parsed by a message dispatcher program. When it is used as a helper application to a Web browser, these messages will be sent from the browser by clicking a hyper-link in a Web document. Our framework also supports pluggable extension-modules for application programs by means of dynamic linking. A prototype system is implemented on our molecular structure-viewer program, MOSBY. It successfully featured a function to load an extension-module required for the docking study of molecular fragments from a Web page. Our simple framework facilitates the concise configuration of Web softwares without complicated knowledge on network computation and security issues. It is also applicable for a wide range of network computations processing private data using a Web browser.

[Sem: a suitable statistical software adaptated for research in oncology].

Many softwares have been adapted for medical use; they rarely enable conveniently both data management and statistics. A recent cooperative work ended up in a new software, Sem (Statistics Epidemiology Medicine), which allows data management of trials and, as well, statistical treatments on them. Very convenient, it can be used by non professional in statistics (biologists, doctors, researchers, data managers), since usually (excepted with multivariate models), the software performs by itself the most adequate test, after what complementary tests can be requested if needed. Sem data base manager (DBM) is not compatible with usual DBM: this constitutes a first protection against loss of privacy. Other shields (passwords, cryptage...) strengthen data security, all the more necessary today since Sem can be run on computers nets. Data organization enables multiplicity: forms can be duplicated by patient. Dates are treated in a special but transparent manner (sorting, date and delay calculations...). Sem communicates with common desktop softwares, often with a simple copy/paste. So, statistics can be easily performed on data stored in external calculation sheets, and slides by pasting graphs with a single mouse click (survival curves...). Already used over fifty places in different hospitals for daily work, this product, combining data management and statistics, appears to be a convenient and innovative solution.

Sharing medication data using the InterCare architecture.

Since June 1998 more than 20 partners from seven European countries are co-operating in the EC funded InterCare project. The primary objective of the InterCare project is to define, specify and implement cross-border products, called services here, that interoperate with one another in order to support shared care. These products should be based on the results of former European projects and must be validated in actual demonstration sites, one of which is located in the Schiedam region in the Netherlands. In this site the InterCare system is applied to medication information which involves integration of systems at the hospital, pharmacy and the general practitioners office. In this setting special attention is paid to security aspects.

A study design to measure the outcomes of education in data security issues among health care professionals.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a study design compiled to measure the outcomes of education in health care data security issues. Based on previous studies the knowledge in data security is not very comprehensive and health care professionals feel that they need more education and training in information technology, specially in the filed of data security issues.

Single Logon: balancing security and healthcare productivity.

Mayo Single Logon (MSL) has faced the traditional dilemma that is painful to all IT organizations because it forces the tradeoff between user productivity and security. Recent regulatory initiatives, such as HIPAA, have caused the issue of security to take on more importance, forcing organizations to revisit the balance of security and productivity. MSL is a security application that brokers user credentials and facilitates desktop security. The simple design, functionality and stability have allowed MSL to speed up user productivity, keep satisfaction high and help solve many security initiatives.
