As the pace of life science discovery increases, so do the demands on researchers. To remain competitive in the life science industry, researchers must use every tool at their disposal to keep up with new products, protocols, news, and literature in their field. While there are now myriad Web sites that assist researchers with this problem, many suffer from confusing user interfaces, poorly designed search engines, and a narrow information focus. Here, we present LabVelocity, a user-friendly Web site that provides a free multidisciplinary information-gathering service for the life science research community. Using LabVelocity, a researcher can quickly find the products, protocols, technical references, news, MEDLINE abstracts, and interactive software tools necessary for an experiment. This aggregation of information can streamline experimental planning and is especially useful when researchers want to set up a new laboratory or to venture outside their field of expertise.

Prosthodontics is a practical science based on life sciences and health sciences, and takes a role to contribute to improvement of health/welfare of peoples. By prosthodontic researches including life sciences and health science, it will be proved that the practice of prosthetic dental treatments is important to health/welfare. In addition, our research activities are expected because of the demographic change caused by the increase of aging population. The scientific research activity of our society is one of the activities for main medical/dental care demanded definitely in the 21st century. Especially, promotion of brain research is just going to be expected. From a prosthodontic treatment point of view, the improvement of diagnostic study focusing on the examining method and the inspecting method is desired. It is included in a diagnosis to predict a degree of functional recovery after prosthodontic treatments. For the evaluation of masticatory function, the evaluating method for the organ and tissue constituting stomatognathic system is necessary as well as the evaluating method for masticatory function. It is hoped that efforts will be made to establish evaluating methods for each organ and tissue in stomatognathic system will be made. As a corporate judicial person, we must build up public-interest activities. It is necessary to provide sufficient information to all dentists in order to offer a quality prosthodontic care by improvement of diagnostic and treatment abilities. Moreover, it is necessary to practice active enlightenment activity about clinical significance of prosthodontic treatment, and to develop strategies to make peoples recognize "prosthodontics as a health science" widely.
We report the outline of Space Experiments conducted on Space Shuttle (STS-95) launched in autumn of 1998. In this STS-95 mission, Japanese astronaut Dr. Chiaki Mukai achieved her 2nd space flight and conducted a part of 82 space experiments including Japanese experiments. US astronaut Senator John Glenn also achieved his second space flight, 36 years after his first space flight. Senator Glenn was a leader of the original (the first) 7 US astronauts and very famous in US because he succeeded US first orbital space flight around the earth. NASDA had started the project of space experiment using STS-95 at the summer of 1997, therefore we had only one year for the all preparation Yamashita, et al. Biological Sciences in Space, Vol.12 No.3(1998). Scientific results will be reported by investigators, therefore we report here how we had been developing the space experiment plan, on board operation procedure and ground operations including ground control experiments about four plant experiments and one cell biology experiment.
Superbugs (microorganisms living in unfamiliar and very harsh environments) are located in the center of scientific interests in the sense that 1) most of their habitats belong to marginal regions of the biosphere, 2) clues for the elucidation of the origin of life can be deduced from them, and 3) they are deeply correlated to the extraterrestrial life. Not only for the basic scientific interests, but also for the applied fields, the spot light is shed to them. We, human beings, have been deeply dependent on other organisms through the global material flow they make. Microorganisms together with plants are the leading characters in this process. Also implicit, our future is surely correlated to microorganisms including superbugs. In this special issue, superbugs; thermophilic, psychrophilic barophilic etc. are summarized, and future development on the study on the superbugs are introduced.

History of the International Space Station, ISS, and planning of its scientific use are described in this essay. Fundamental gravitational biology and its facility on the ISS have been identified to have the highest priority to conduct scientific experiments with variable G environment in orbit. The road map of space activities is clearly directing the efforts toward manned Mars exploration. The Centrifuge is a core element of the facilities dedicated to this endeavor. Several research subjects are discussed with the results obtained from the past space experiments. Direct effects of gravity on the biological system at the level of integrative organisms are major subjects of study that will be conducted on the large scaled centrifuge.
Space researches are supported with the international space agencies, NASA and NASDA. Animal experiments on the space life science must conform to the NIH policies and the NASA guide for the care and use of laboratory animals. The goal of the NIH policies is to promote the humane care of animals used biomedical and behavioral research, teaching, and testing. In each institute, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) plays an important role in conformity with NIH policies. The IACUC is charged with developing, recommending and monitoring NIH/NASA (ARC and KSC) policies, guides and rules relating to animal acquisition, care and use. In ARC and KSC, investigators will be responsible only for activities directly related to the conduct of their animal experiments. Even if researchers have protocols of the space science in Japan, the animal experiment should be carried out under the global harmonized conditions in accordance with NIH policies and NASA guides.
To know a basic mechanism of biological organism on the earth, we can have a standard point to space. An example is hindlimb suspension model that could induce muscle atrophy. This model mimics adaptational changes under zero gravity; in turn the effect of gravity on the biological system developing on the earth. We can understand gravity is a stress from the specific changes of stress protein induced by mechanical stimuli depending on gravity. Recent development of fluorescent microscopy and time-lapse visual system brought us a possibility of analysis to see visualization of dynamic properties of molecular and cellular events in living cells. Especially dynamic fluctuation of cytoskeleton may include new ideas of biological strategy of living organism on the earth and possibly may suggest subtle changes in space.
The Future Plan Committee of the Japanese Society for Biological Sciences in Space drafted a Life Science Education Programs. The program consists of preparation of teaching materials for elementary and high school teachers and of summer course of the gravitational and space biology for university students and young scientists. The outline of the programme are presented.
Basic science and applied science instruction are compatible and essential for animal science professionals to succeed in their chosen career. Application of science is a continuum. Although production methods are constantly evolving, the science on which changes are made is fixed and fundamental. Only our understanding changes. We are educating students in preparation for a life-long learning process. Viability of animal science departments depends on attracting and challenging students with curricula that are demanding, create curiosity, and prepare students to understand the "whys and hows" of the phenomena of animal biology.
At the beginning of space flight, the investigations were oriented essentially toward the health of the astronauts. But in the last three decades space biology has evolved from "try-and-see" experiments to sophisticated basic and applied research with well-based hypotheses as well as studies on the use of low gravity in biological applications. In 1977 the Space Biology Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, began its activities in space research. A summary of the experiments performed to date, from basic research on the human immune system to the development of sophisticated instruments for biotechnology and medical application, is presented here.
The origination, development and application of a hypermedia system for use in the life sciences is described. Implemented in the Apple Macintosh HyperCard environment, the project has been designed to make use of commercially produced laser discs as visual archives and has included the production of authoring and navigational tools. We report here on our experience in authoring stacks for undergraduate teaching, monitoring of student use and assessment of effectiveness as a self-teaching resource. Future developments and applications within the biomedical sciences are discussed.
