Comparing perceptions of dental aesthetics in the USA with those in eleven ethnic groups.

The Standard DAI is an orthodontic index based on perceptions of dental aesthetics in the USA. The Standard DAI is a regression equation linking perceptions of the social acceptability of dental aesthetics with the objective intraoral measurements of ten occlusal traits. Since the Standard DAI is based on perceptions of dental aesthetics in the USA it can be used without modification only where perceptions of dental aesthetics are similar to those in the USA. This study was designed to determine whether perceptions of dental aesthetics of students in eleven diverse ethnic groups are similar to those of students in the USA. The same 25 stimuli (photographs of dental configurations, a subset of the 200 stimuli used in deriving the Standard DAI equation) were rated for dental aesthetics by Australian, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Native American, Singaporean Chinese, Singaporean Indian, Singaporean Malay, and Thai students. Their ratings were compared with the ratings of the same 25 stimuli by students in the USA. Spearman rank-order correlations ranged from 0.84 to 0.94. These correlations are sufficiently high to show that perceptions of dental aesthetics in all eleven ethnic groups are very similar to the perceptions of USA students. Therefore the Standard DAI can be used without modification in all eleven ethnic groups.

Implant-based treatment for the loss of a single tooth.

This article describes the authors' experience in the provision of single-tooth replacement by means of Brånemark implant treatments. Over a 5-year period, 45 treatments have been undertaken with a current fixture retention rate of 100 percent. Careful planning and attention to detail in surgical, prosthodontic, and technical aspects have resulted in an excellent functional and aesthetic treatment with high acceptance by patients.

[Possibilities for improvement of the surface properties of dental implants (2). The use of ceramic oxides in surface coating for titanium and tantalum implants].

A corrosion-resistant, 2000-2500 A thick, ceramic oxide layer with a coherent crystalline structure was produced on the surface of titanium implants. The layer contains a bioactive component, it is made from the material of the implant, adheres well and gives an aesthetically pleasant impression. The coated implants were subjected to various physical, chemical electronmicroscopic, etc. tests for their qualitative characterization. These tests demonstrated the good properties of the implants. The procedure is protected internationally by patents.

Changing the appearance of anterior teeth with porcelain veneers: a case report.

A case is described in which porcelain veneers were used to improve the appearance of the upper anterior teeth and disguise a marked dental centre-line asymmetry. This followed the traumatic loss of the upper left central incisor and complete space loss. Four anterior teeth were treated so that the illusion of symmetry might be enhanced, and the rationale behind this approach is discussed.

Cosmetic dental treatment in an adult Dutch population.

In 1992 a follow-up to the Dutch national dental survey of 1986 (DNDS) was performed. The main objective was to analyse changes in oral self care, dental attendance, and oral health status. A postal questionnaire was used: 936 persons (44 per cent response) participated in the study. This paper will focus on the results concerning cosmetic dental treatment. Stepwise regression analyses were used to study the effect of dental and social variables. Relative risks (RR) were computed to clarify the effect of these variables. Of the group of respondents, 90 persons reported having been treated with veneers on their anterior teeth. The variables indicating cosmetic dental treatment needs established during the DNDS clinical dental examination, showed a statistically significant influence. 'Objective need': RR = 2.6; 'Subjective need': RR = 2.1. Out of 877 respondents with restorations present in 1986, 19 per cent reported having one or more of them replaced by composite or porcelain. Four variables were found to have a statistically significant influence: 'Subjective need': RR = 1.7; 'Number of filled tooth surfaces': RR = 1.6; 'Number of decayed tooth surfaces': RR = 1.4; and 'Frequency of toothbrushing': RR = 1.6. Whereas the dentists' opinions had the most influence on having veneer treatments, the patients' opinions had more influence on having amalgam restorations replaced with composite or porcelain.

A comparison of aesthetic inlay systems.

A comparison of the aesthetic inlay systems available to the dental practitioner is made. The methods of fabrication of the various types of inlay are described, together with the reasons for utilization of the inlays. The indications and the contra-indications for prescribing these systems are listed, and the advantages and disadvantages of the inlays are enumerated. The clinical technique for the inlays is briefly outlined, and the use of resin luting cements is reviewed.

A conservative, aesthetic, restorative treatment of a worn dentition.

Advances in adhesive technology and in materials science have combined to provide the dentist with techniques which increased the ability to achieve the ultimate restorative objective: The restoration of diseased or missing tooth structure, including its appearance, without the additional removal of healthy tooth structure. The learning objective of this article is to illustrate, using a case report, how far restorative dentistry, redefined as aesthetic, adhesive, restorative dentistry, has taken us in this endeavor.

Techniques for aesthetic enhancement of porcelain laminate veneer restorations: a case report.

The article is a clinical report of various techniques to enhance the aesthetic outcome of porcelain veneer restorations. Color and contour evaluation, increase in shade value, bleaching, and the use of temporary veneer restorations are presented and discussed. A case is used to illustrate the procedures. The learning objective of this article is to expand and update the knowledge of variations in current porcelain veneer restoration techniques.

Comparing ethnic group-specific DAI equations with the standard DAI.

The Standard DAI is an orthodontic index based on public perceptions of dental aesthetics in the USA and is a regression equation linking the relative social acceptability of dental appearance and the objective, physical measurements of ten occlusal traits. It can be used in surveys of need for orthodontic treatment and as a screening tool in public programmes providing orthodontic care. To determine if the Standard DAI could be used internationally, 200 stimuli (photographs of dental configurations) were rated for dental aesthetics by 413 Chinese students, 418 Latvian students and 428 Native Americans. To develop ethnic group-specific DAI equations these ratings were linked by regression procedures to the occlusal trait measurements available for each of the 200 stimuli. Using these equations, group-specific DAI scores were calculated for the 200 stimuli. At all levels on the DAI scale the percentage agreements, sensitivities and specificities ranged from 73 to 100 per cent indicating that the Standard DA can be used without modification to calculate DAI scores among Chinese, Latvians and Native Americans.
