Removal efficiencies of PCDDs/PCDFs by air pollution control devices in municipal solid waste incinerators.

Removal efficiencies of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) by air pollution control devices (APCDs) in the commercial-scale municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators with a capacity of above 200 ton/day were evaluated. The removal efficiencies of PCDDs/PCDFs were up to 95% when the activated carbon (AC) was injected in front of electrostatic precipitator (EP). Spray dryer absorber/bag filter (SDA/BF) had high removal efficiency (99%)) of PCDDs/PCDFs when a mixture of lime and AC was sprayed into the SDA. When the AC was not added in scrubbing solution, the whole congeners of PCDDs/PCDFs were enriched in the wet scrubber (WS) with negative removal efficiencies of -25% to -5731%. Discharge of PCDDs/PCDFs was decreased with increasing the proportions of AC added in scrubbing solution. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system had the removal efficiencies of up to 93% during the test operation.

Evaluation on speciation and removal efficiencies of mercury from municipal solid waste incinerators in Taiwan.

Two large-scale municipal solid waste incinerators (MWIs) located in Taiwan were selected for conducting flue gas sampling to determine the chemical speciation of mercury by both USEPA Method 29 and Ontario Hydro Method (OHM). In addition, the emission characteristics and removal efficiencies of mercury were evaluated via isokinetic sampling of flue gas upstream and downstream of APCDs. Results indicated that the average removal efficiencies of Hg for MWI-A and MWI-B were 29.56 and 44.70%, respectively. In terms of mercury speciation by USEPA Method 29 and Ontario Hydro Method (OHM), oxidized mercury (Hg2+), in the flue gas was predominant at the inlet of APCD for both incinerators. Less than 30% of mercury in the flue gas existed in the elemental form (Hg0) at APCD inlet. Mercury emitted from the stack also predominated as a form of Hg2+ in MWI-A. Approximately 90% of total mercury emission from the stack existed in the form of Hg2+ for MWI-A. Due to the higher removal efficiency of soluble mercury (Hg2+) in wet scrubber, less total Hg was actually emitted from MWI-B than MWI-A. Regarding the removal efficiency of Hg0 in the flue gas, the APCDs of MWI-A (DSI + FF) had a higher removal efficiency than that of MWI-B (ESP + WS) possibly due to the reduction of Hg2+ which occurred in the wet scrubber.

Correlation between reproductive efficiency, as determined by new mathematical indexes, and the body condition score in dairy cows.

The aim of this work was to study a new mathematical model based on dynamic indexes designed to evaluate reproductive efficiency in dairy herds and to correlate the new index with the body condition score (BCS) in order to evaluate the reproductive state of the cows post partum. Four groups of dairy cows were used: 1) loose-housed Italian Friesian (loose Friesian, n = 190); 2) stanchioned Italian Friesian (stanchioned Friesian, n = 121); 3) stanchioned Italian Simmental (stanchioned Simmental, n = 120); and 4) loose-housed selected Italian Friesian cows (BCS test, n = 117). The first 3 herds were used to develop the new mathematical model while the fourth was used to correlate the method with the BCS. The new model was developed from the analysis of progesterone (P4) concentrations in whey and the frequency distribution of the cows in 3 reproductive states: cyclicity, acyclicity and pregnancy. The frequency distribution generated 3 curves, the intersections of which form a closed area. The barycenter of this closed area gives a simple static representation of the reproductive efficiency of each herd. We also studied the movement of the barycenter with time (dynamic index) for each reproductive status curve. The dynamic index allowed for evaluation of the reproductive efficiency of a group of cows at 40 d after calving, by analyzing the evolution of the different reproductive states post partum. A reproductive index called Cycle Time was characterized in a 240-d period of observation as the interval needed to bring all the animals from acyclic to pregnant status. The loose Friesian cows had the best reproductive efficiency. The BCS test was used to divide cows into 3 groups depending on the percentage loss of BCS due to the negative energy balance at 30 d post partum. Cows which lost more than 20% in BCS had the lowest reproductive efficiency. The following protocol was devised to monitor herds in order to identify cows that were likely to have reproductive problems: 1) measure BCS 10 d before calving; 2) monitor progesterone in whey starting 5 d after calving; 3) measure BCS 30 d after calving; 4) isolate cows that lost more than 20% of BCS; 5) measure progesterone only in the cows that lose more than 20% of BCS; 6) activate appropriate feeding strategies to help prevent excessive mobilization of body fat reserves.

Cutting efficiency loss of root canal instruments due to bulk plastic deformation, surface damage, and wear.

Cutting efficiency loss of #15 H-type and K-type files was studied as a function of bulk plastic deformation and cutting edge wear. Instrumentation was done by purely extractive filing, without any significant torsional and/or bending strain. Cutting efficiency variations were assessed by means of cutting force measurement, while absolute cutting efficiency was obtained through three-dimensional scanning stylus profilometry. Bulk plastic deformation-induced flute modifications may lower the cutting efficiency of H-type files by approximately 50%. For this instrument special care is required in tip and flute machining to avoid in vivo breakage. On the contrary, within the normal life-span of an instrument of approximately 100 strokes cutting edge wear is seen to be negligible. The existence of such wear is "inferred" indirectly from a 10% drop in extraction efficiency.

Properties of endodontic hand instruments used in rotary motion. Part 1. Cutting efficiency.

Cutting efficiency of 24 different types of endodontic hand instruments, which are primarily designed for a rotary (reaming) working action, was investigated under standardized conditions. With a computer-driven testing device, resin specimens with simulated cylindrical canals were instrumented using a defined working motion simulating the clinical use of the instruments. Maximum penetration depth was the criterion for cutting efficiency. Sample size was 12 instruments for each type and size (#25 and #35). Nitinol K-files showed the least cutting efficiency. Stainless steel reamers and especially K-files showed better cutting efficiency than Nitinol K-files. Flexible stainless steel instruments displayed the best results. With regard to cutting efficiency, flexible stainless steel instruments were clearly superior to stainless steel reamers and K-files, and especially to Nitinol K-files.

Dentin removal efficiency of six endodontic systems: a quantitative comparison.

The dentin removal efficiency of current endodontic systems, based on the amount of dentin removed in 1 mm of canal axial length, was determined for working times of 1 and 2 min. Six endodontic systems were compared: The Giromatic with Heli-Giro files, the Sonic-Air with Shapers, the Mecasonic with Shapers, the Cavi-Med with K files, the Cavi-Med with Shapers, the Excalibur with its own K files. Generally speaking, the efficiency of each device depends on the duration of instrumentation, on the type of file used, and on its mode of activation. For 1 min of instrumentation, the Mecasonic+Shaper was the most efficient system. For 2 min of instrumentation, the original adaptation of the Shaper on the Cavi-Med gave the highest activity. Concerning the files used in ultrasonics, the Shaper seems to be more efficient than the K file. As for the sonics, the Excalibur+file system gave results comparable to those of the Mecasonic+Shaper; both of these devices were twice as efficient as the Sonic-Air+Shaper.

Cutting efficiency of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments and the effect of sodium hypochlorite treatment.

The purpose of this study was to assess the cutting efficiency of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files in the presence and absence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) treatment, and compare them to a conventional stainless-steel K-type file. NiTi files from four manufacturers were randomly selected and exposed to NaOCl for 12 or 48 h, or not at all. Their cutting efficiencies were then assessed, using a new methodology: "mass of Plexiglass cut per energy used over 50 linear cutting motions." In the absence of NaOCl, Brasseler (318 micrograms/J) and Maillefer (280 micrograms/J) NiTi files were most efficient, followed by JS Dental (71.4 micrograms/J) and McSpadden (40 micrograms/J). These differences were significant (p < 0.0001), except for those between the latter two brands. Moreover, NaOCl treatment did not alter the cutting efficiency of any brand of instruments significantly. When compared with conventional stainless steel files, all NiTi files tested were less efficient.

Considerations on treatment efficiency of different conformal radiation therapy techniques for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To evaluate the treatment efficiency of different conformal radiation therapy techniques in prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three major classes of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) delivery as well as a conformal rotation technique have been evaluated: sequential tomotherapy, dynamic multileaf collimation (DMLC) with conventional MLC, DMLC with miniMLC and dynamic field shaping arc. Treatment planning for the IMRT techniques has been performed with inverse planning. Forward planning was used for the dynamic arc technique. The four techniques have been compared to treat two different prostate cases with a conservative target dose of 70 Gy: a convex shaped target volume and one containing concavities formed by the bladder and rectum. Cumulative dose volume histograms, tumor control probability and normal tissue complication probability, conformity index and dose heterogeneity, and finally efficiency of treatment delivery have been evaluated. RESULTS: For the convex shaped target, all treatment modalities met the desired treatment goals, although the conventional MLC delivered more dose to the bladder. Compared to the dynamic arc modality, both tomotherapy and the conventional MLC technique needed a tenfold higher number of monitor units per target dose, and the miniMLC a twofold higher number. The same trend has been observed for the concave target, yet the dynamic arc did not meet the desired dose reduction for the rectum. The miniMLC configuration represented the best compromise for both targets with respect to treatment goals and delivery efficiency. Sequential tomotherapy performed adequately with respect to conformity at the cost of efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Together with conformity and delivery efficiency the shape of the target should be considered as an important parameter in the selection of the treatment modality.

Consequence of feedback-based learning of an effective hand rim wheelchair force production on mechanical efficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Investigation of the effect of visual feedback on effective hand rim wheelchair force production and the subsequent effect on gross mechanical efficiency. DESIGN: Ten subjects in an experimental group and 10 subjects in a control group practised three weeks (3.wk(-1), i.e., a pre-test and 8 trials) on a computer-controlled wheelchair ergometer. Every trial consisted of two blocks of 4 min at 0.15 and 0.25 W.kg(-1) at 1.11 m.s(-1). On three trials an additional block at 0.40 W.kg(-1) was performed. The experimental group practised with and the control group practised without visual feedback on the effectiveness of force production. BACKGROUND: In mechanical terms, the low gross mechanical efficiency of hand rim wheelchair propulsion may be the result of ineffective force production. METHODS: During all trials oxygen uptake, power output, forces and torque on the hand rims were measured. RESULTS: In comparison with the control group, the experimental group at trial 8 had a significantly more effective force production compared to the control group (90-97% vs. 79-83%, respectively), but showed a significantly lower mechanical efficiency (5.5-8.5% vs. 5.9-9.9%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that the most effective force production from a mechanical point of view is not necessarily the most efficient way--in terms of energy cost-- from a biological point of view and that force direction is based on an optimization of cost and effect. RELEVANCE: Learning a more effective force production by visual feedback is not useful for increasing the mechanical efficiency of hand rim wheelchair propulsion.

Cefazolin dialytic clearance by high-efficiency and high-flux hemodialyzers.

Cefazolin dialytic clearance has not been determined in patients undergoing hemodialysis with high-efficiency or high-flux dialyzers. The objective of this study is to determine the pharmacokinetics and dialytic clearance of cefazolin and develop dosing strategies in these patients. Twenty-five uninfected subjects undergoing chronic thrice-weekly hemodialysis were administered a single dose of intravenous cefazolin (15 mg/kg) after their standard hemodialysis session. Fifteen subjects underwent hemodialysis with high-efficiency hemodialyzers, and 10 subjects underwent hemodialysis with high-flux hemodialyzers. Blood and urine samples were collected serially over the interdialytic period, during the next intradialytic period, and immediately after the next hemodialysis session. Serum and urine concentrations of cefazolin were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Differential equations describing a two-compartment model were fit to the cefazolin serum concentration-time data over the study period, and pharmacokinetic parameters were determined. Mean dialytic clearance values for cefazolin were significantly greater in the high-flux group compared with the high-efficiency group (30.9 +/- 6.52 versus 18.0 +/- 6.26 mL/min, respectively; P: < 0.05). Cefazolin reduction ratios were significantly greater (0.62 +/- 0.08 versus 0.50 +/- 0.07; P: < 0.005) in the high-flux group compared with the high-efficiency group and correlated well with equilibrated urea reduction. The pharmacokinetic model developed from patient data was used to simulate cefazolin serum concentration data for high-efficiency and high-flux dialyzers. Cefazolin doses of 15 or 20 mg/kg after each hemodialysis session maintained adequate serum concentrations throughout a 2- or 3-day interdialytic period regardless of hemodialyzer type.

Gentamicin clearance during hemodialysis: a comparison of high-efficiency cuprammonium rayon and conventional cellulose ester hemodialyzers.

The advent of high-efficiency hemodialyzers has afforded improved efficiency of urea clearance; however, increased clearance of other substances, particularly antibiotics, also may occur, necessitating changes in clinical practice. Accordingly, we compared the efficiency of gentamicin removal using two different hemodialyzers, a conventional saponified cellulose ester (CD 135) and a high-efficiency cuprammonium rayon dialyzer (TAF 175L), in eight hospitalized patients undergoing antibiotic therapy for suspected or proven gram-negative infection. The rate of dialysis, estimated as the ratio of dialyzer urea clearance (K) to urea distribution volume (V) (K/V urea), and the total elimination rate constant (k) of gentamicin were measured during 17 hemodialysis treatments. The K/V urea for the two dialyzers, TAF 175L and CD 135, was 0.390 +/- 0.024 hr-1 and 0.413 +/- 0.129 hr-1 (P = NS), respectively. The TAF 175L hemodialyzer was almost twice as efficient in removing gentamicin as the CD 135: TAF 175, k = 0.263 +/- 0.024 hr-1; CD 135, k = 0.132 +/- 0.027 hr-1 (P < 0.001). Moreover, the rate of dialysis (K/V urea) was correlated with k of gentamicin for the TAF 175L dialyzer (r2 = 0.50, P < 0.02) but not for the CD 135 dialyzer. We conclude that dialyzer characteristics and the rate of dialysis (K/V urea) should be taken into consideration when determining the dosage of gentamicin in patients on hemodialysis.

Heterogeneity in gentamicin clearance between high-efficiency hemodialyzers.

Gentamicin is frequently prescribed for treatment of gram-negative infections in patients on dialysis. The amino-glycoside is renally excreted; therefore, dosage modifications are required in patients on hemodialysis. The introduction of short-duration dialysis using high-efficiency hemodialyzers requires that the dialysance of gentamicin be re-examined. We recently demonstrated that high-efficiency dialyzers have a superior gentamicin clearance as compared with conventional dialyzers. In this study we examined the dialysance of gentamicin in two high-efficiency dialyzers using a randomized, controlled, cross-over design. Despite a comparable amount of dialysis (Kt/V urea), rate of dialysis (K/V urea), and ultrafiltration, there were significant differences noted in gentamicin removal between the high-efficiency cuprammonium rayon and polysulfone dialyzers. Furthermore, the amount of dialysis (Kt/V urea) could predict the fractional gentamicin clearance for the TAF 175L dialyzer (Terumo Corp, Somerset, NJ) and may be useful in the initial planning of gentamicin therapy. In addition, since gentamicin is a middle molecule (molecular weight, 500 to 2,000 d), the study suggests a superior middle molecule clearance of cuprammonium rayon dialyzer compared with a high-efficiency polysulfone dialyzer. The substantial heterogeneity in gentamicin clearance, even between dialyzers of the same class, emphasizes the importance of monitoring drug levels in hemodialysis patients receiving this drug.

Particle versus mercury removal efficiency of amalgam separators.

OBJECTIVE: The intent of this project was to evaluate the efficiency of three commercial amalgam separators based on mercury and particle removal. METHODS: Dental wastewater samples were collected from a 54-chair dental clinic and a one chair private dental office. Atomic absorption spectrometry was used to measure mercury, and a laser diffractometer method to determine the particle size distributions. RESULTS: The mercury removal efficiency of the three units ranged from 26.5 to 61.8% for the 54-chair clinic and from 80.8 to 94.7% for the one chair office. Following treatment, the particle size range of the effluent was 8.3-19.2 microm for the 54-chair office and 27.5-41.4 microm for the one-chair clinic. For particle samples based on the silver-copper and copper standards, the three amalgam separators had a particle removal efficiency ranging from 92.3 to 99.9%. The initial particle size distributions for these samples were all under 100 microm. CONCLUSIONS: The efficiency of the amalgam separators is influenced by the initial concentration of the dental wastewater, the physical setup of the discharge system before the dental wastewater reaches the separators, and the addition of chemicals to the dental wastewater. In addition, it is likely that assessment of efficiency based on particle removal by weight may not be as effective as removal based on concentration.

An optical technique to determine the total collection efficiency of a cylone.

An experimental method is proposed to determine the total collection efficiency of a cyclone. An optical technique is utilized to measure and calculate the total collection efficiency by integrating the area below the size distribution curve upstream and downstream of the cyclone by a particle counter-sizer-velocimeter. The results show that the size distribution upstream and downstream of the cyclone is almost a smooth curve. It could be used to calculate the total collection efficiency. The measured total efficiency by the particle counter-sizer-velocimeter is 2-3% higher than that measured by the weighing method. This close agreement between the two methods suggests that the total collection efficiency may be determined by the optical technique.

Significance of variation in DNA flow cytometric analyses from paraffin-embedded breast cancers. Evaluation of the grading efficiency of ploidy determination, DNA index, and S-phase fraction.

116 paraffin-embedded breast cancer samples were analyzed by flow cytometry. From each sample 3 consecutive 50 microns sections were cut for the study. The presence of neoplastic tissue was verified from light microscope sections cut before and after the adjacent sections. One laboratory started with one section from each block and was allowed extra sections when needed for analysis. At the end the laboratory obtained results from all 116 cases. The rest of the samples were studied by 2 other laboratories. Samples with results from 2 or 3 laboratories then allowed variability analysis and the estimation of the grading efficiency in a 2-grade system. Inconsistency in diploidy/aneuploidy distinction was present in 36 of 111 (32.4%) cases studied by two or three laboratories. This inconsistency was less obvious in samples graded as multiploid by at least one of the laboratories. The grading efficiency as analyzed from the results of 3 laboratories was 0.89, and of 2 laboratories, 0.84. The DNA index showed a slightly higher grading efficiency. At the cutoff point of 1.3, 91% of cases could be expected to be correctly classified into low ploidy and high ploidy groups (grading efficiency 0.91). The S-phase fraction had a mean grading efficiency of 0.89, a performance comparable to that of diploidy/aneuploidy distinction. In the light of the available data the flow cytometric analysis can add to the consistency of grading, especially when compared with subjective histological grading. However, the data do not suggest that flow cytometric analysis of paraffin sections as a grading method would be more consistent than quantitative histopathology from sections.

Mouse testicular extracts process DNA double-strand breaks efficiently by DNA end-to-end joining.

DNA double-strand break (DSB) processing was studied in mouse testicular extracts using a defined DSB created by cleaving supercoiled pUC12 DNA at a unique site as the substrate, and analysing the processed DNA by gel electrophoresis. Our results demonstrated that enzymatic activity in the extracts promoted multimerization of DNA and suppressed its circularization. This was distinctly different from T4 DNA ligase activity in the control and therefore the process must be more complex than simple ligation. Efficiency of this end-to-end joining was ATP and Mg(2+)-dependent and was much higher with cohesive (especially with 5') than with blunt ends. On recleaving, the joining was predominantly faithful, especially for cohesive ends; but a detectable fraction of DNA had undergone end-processed joining causing junctional deletions, mostly with blunt ends. Redigestion of end-joined products from time course experiments established that the end-deleted joining occurred concurrent to the faithful joining. Junctional segments were cloned and their restriction analysis confirmed the presence of large deletions from both the sides. These results suggested the association of an end-processing activity (exonuclease/helicase + flap endonuclease) along with the end-joining ligase(s). Suppression of end-edited joining on lowering the reaction temperature to 17 degrees or 14 degrees C, despite efficient faithful joining, indicated that this enzymatic activity is retarded at low temperature. Though the efficiency and fidelity of joining were termini-dependent, the orientation of joining was random. Lack of preference for homologous ends (H:H or T:T), as well as efficient joining of heterologous DNA (pUC12/pBR322) having two different blunt termini, showed that the end joining could occur independent of extensive/terminal homology. Retention of radioactivity on end joining of (alpha-32P)dCTP end-filled cohesive termini, and lack of their junctional cleavability, apparently due to restriction site duplication, suggested direct double strand ligation. Thus it is demonstrated that mouse male germ cells possess an efficient DNA end-joining activity, involving either a major pathway of precise joining, or a minor end-deleted joining, and it seems to be achieved by a multienzymatic complex as suggested also for somatic cells by others. These results show that mammalian male germ cells that are proficient in homologous recombination utilize nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) mechanism for DSB processing and therefore NHEJ is a conserved, universal pathway for the vital function of DSB repair.

"Antioxidant" (reducing) efficiency of ascorbate in plasma is not affected by concentration.

Ascorbate (vitamin C), an important dietary derived antioxidant, reportedly shows decreasing "antioxidant efficiency" with increasing concentrations in indirect radical trapping methods of antioxidant capacity. This study investigated the effect of concentration on antioxidant efficiency of ascorbate using a direct test of antioxidant capacity, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power test (FRAP assay). Results showed that the antioxidant efficiency factor of ascorbate was 2 and was constant over a wide concentration range in both plasma and pure aqueous solution. However, the absolute amount of ascorbate lost per unit of time increased with concentration. Furthermore, ascorbate was less stable in plasma than in aqueous solutions of similar pH and less stable in ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) than in heparinized plasma. Results indicate that previously reported concentration-dependent changes in antioxidant efficiency of ascorbate may have been caused by loss of ascorbate prior to and during testing, and by methodologic characteristics of indirect peroxyl radical trapping tests of antioxidant capacity. Therefore, it is suggested that the premise that the antioxidant efficiency of ascorbate is concentration-dependent is largely methodologically derived and does not reflect the antioxidant behavior of ascorbate per se.

Efficiency and safety of leukocyte filtration during cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Leukocyte filtration of systemic blood during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery to reduce post-operative morbidity has not yet been established because of the enormous leukocyte release from the third space. This study was designed to examine the efficiency and safety of leukocyte filtration by a new prototype large capacity leukocyte filter. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery were prospectively divided into two groups: a leukocyte removal group (n = 11) receiving leukocyte filtration during cardiopulmonary bypass and a control group (n = 20) with no filtration. The filtration efficiency was indicated by electronic leukocyte counts before and after filtration and the clinical efficiency to reduce post-operative morbidity was indicated by PaO2. Safety was indicated by monitoring the filtration pressure and leukocyte release products across the filter, as well as by examining the post-filtration filter by light and electron microscopy. RESULTS: On an average, 75% of all entering leukocytes were removed by the filter. The post-operative PaO2 showed a tendency to improve after filtration. During filtration, the pressure across the filter material increased in five cases, accompanied by an increase in post-filter plasma hemoglobin and beta-glucoronidase. Within these filters accumulations of fibrin network with many trapped leukocytes were discovered microscopically. CONCLUSIONS: The filter was efficient in filtering leukocytes, but the filtration efficiency slowed at the end of filtration. Furthermore, the patients' post-operative parameters showed a tendency to improve after filtration. However, flow obstruction by means of clotting seems to be an important issue of safety involved in the filtration of large numbers of leukocytes for cardiopulmonary surgical patients.
