[An experimental study on tissue induction in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with the scaffold-type polyester artificial ligament (Leeds-Keio)].

The effect of experimental autogenous tissue implantation (infrapatellar fat pad, fascia lata) together with scaffold type artificial ligament (Leeds-Keio) in ACL reconstruction was studied in 56 mongrel adult dogs. Specimens were examined macroscopically, histologically and by means of microangiography. The results were compared with those in which the artificial ligament was used alone. When infrapatellar fat pad was transferred on artificial ligament, tissue induction was observed 2 weeks after reconstruction. When ACL was reconstructed using a combination of artificial ligament and a small piece of fascia lata, maturated dense collagen fibers were observed 24 weeks after reconstruction. These results indicated that quicker tissue induction could be obtained in ACL reconstruction using an artificial ligament together with a infrapatellar fat pad, and that collagen fiber maturation was accelerated when ACL was reconstructed using an artificial ligament together with a small piece of fascia lata.

[First derivative spetrophotometric direct determination of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzo phenone in polyester resin by computer assistant].

2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzo phenone (UV-9) is one of general auxiliary reagents used in paint resin and plastics, which can delay the material degradation and ageing of high polymer. Direct determination of high polymer by ultraviolet spectrum has not been reported. We selected an efficient solvent that can dissolve the resin of high polymer, and got an even, transparent and steady mensuration system. The first derivative absorption data of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzo phenone (UV-9) were treated many times with smooth handing by Origin 6.1, a famous data analysis software. At a certain wavelength, the results accord with Beer's law from 1.000 to 20.00 microg x mL(-1), thus UV-9 can be measured directly. Its absorptivity is 5.7 x 10(4) L x mol(-1) x cm(-1). The results of synthetic samples determined by this method showed that the relative standard deviation and the relative error of UV-9 are less than 5.25% and 4.75% respectively, and the UV-9 recovery rate is 98.88%-102.04%.

Replacement of the rabbit medial meniscus with a polyester-carbon fibre bioprosthesis.

Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits underwent prosthetic replacement of the meniscus which was attached to the intercondylar area of the tibia through a predrilled hole and around the internal surface of the capsule by sutures, in one knee, and meniscectomy alone in the contralateral knee. The animals were killed 3 and 6 month after implantation. Fragmentation of carbon fibres was noted in six knee joints. Histological sections demonstrated more progressive articular cartilage degeneration of the tibial surface which had the meniscus removed alone (P = 0.05). The implant was incorporated into the capsule with minimal invasion of fibrous tissue into the interstices of the prosthesis. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the extent of articular cartilage fibrillation which was more evident in the area where the meniscus covered the tibia.

[Anticomplement activity of a polyanion: pentosan sulfuric polyester. III. Mechanism of functional inactivation of the different properdin and complement system fractions].

In vitro, the drug pentosan-poly-sulfoester (PPS) changes the electrophoretic migration of different proteins from the complement and properdin systems, such as native C3 (beta 1C globulin), C3c (beta-1A globulin), C3d (alpha-2D globulin), C1s inactivator (ClsINA), Clq and properdin factor B (B). Their more anodal migration is the consequence of a molecular alteration and persists after prolonged dialysis. These structural changes, yet undefined, explain the loss of functional activity of these proteins, and the anticomplementary activity of this drug. Moreover, PPS is able to block the alternate pathway activation by its action on properdin factor B (C3 proactivator). In fact, in presence of PPS, the activators of the properdin systems such as C3 nephritic factor are inactive. These altered mobilities are also responsible for the overestimation in the antigenic concentration of B (+ 45%), C4 (+27%) and C3/C3c (+ 14%), found in human serum containing 50 mg/ml of PPS. PPS has an original action upon the complement and properdin systems, which allows its clinical use as a potent inhibitor of the humoral mediators of inflammation.

[Vascular prosthesis made of polyester threads for microsurgery].

The results of experimental and medical application of worked out by the authors synthetic microvascular prosthesis with the internal diameter from 1 to 3 mm. The prostheses were implanted to the abdominal aorta and to the tail vein of rats and also to femoral and carotid arteries of cats for a period of 1 till 15 months. The angiographic and morphologic experiments of blood flow were carried out. The patency of the microprosthesis in the experiments was to 92.7%. The micro-implant adaptation was characterized by complete tissue isolation of a synthetic skeleton with formation of thin and even internal membrane covered with endothelium layer. In fact the possibility of arterial and venous prostheses having a 1-2 mm diameter with synthetic substitutional textile products creates new possibilities for the further development of the microvascular surgery. The microvascular prosthesis was applied to 10 patients in plastic surgery of small circumferential arteries of limbs achieving positive results.
