Thematic instrument for measuring death anxiety in children (TIMDAC).

Few instruments measure death anxiety in children, especially, children of color. This article describes the development and psychometric properties of the projective instrument, the Thematic Instrument for Measuring Death Anxiety in Children (TIMDAC), a culturally sensitive tool that was developed to compare levels of death anxiety in children diagnosed with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and health peers. Many of the children with AIDS are African Americans and Latinos.

Positive symptoms and the organization within and between ideas in schizophrenic speech.

The study examined the performance of positive symptom schizophrenics vis à vis that of demographically well-matched negative symptom schizophrenics and normals in organizing words into ideas and ideas into integrated spoken discourse. This involved applying a series of analyses to speech produced when describing pictures in an unconstrained way. The results showed that, for the most part, positive symptom schizophrenics organized their speech, both within and between ideas, as well as negative symptom schizophrenics and normals. The results did, however, show an increased tendency by the positive speech disordered schizophrenics to omit referents for noun phrases requiring referents. This constitutes a specific failure to connect ideas and does, at least in part, explain what makes positive speech disorder (incoherence of speech) unintelligible. However, taken altogether, the results do not support the extant view that positive symptom schizophrenics suffer from a general loss of control in producing speech.

Assessing the validity of the achievement motive in the presence of random measurement error.

The presence of random measurement error in indicators of theoretical constructs biases observed estimates of relations among those constructs. Correcting for this bias is particularly important when random measurement error is substantial, or is substantially different for indicators of distinct constructs included in a theoretical model. Validity assessment in the case of thematic apperceptive measures of the achievement motive (TAT n Achievement) has been vulnerable to interpretive errors because these indicators of the achievement motive are typically much less reliable than indicators of other constructs to which the motive may be related, and no correction has been made for the bias introduced by such differential measurement error. Here we illustrate a causal modeling approach to validity assessment for TAT n Achievement that incorporates explicit true-score measurement models of theoretical constructs. We confirm the hypothesis that the achievement motive construct is positively related to work satisfaction in a representative sample of adult males in the United States, taken in 1976 (N = 413). Evidence for the discriminant validity of story content versus story length, an issue raised in the literature on the TAT, is also presented in this nomological network.

Personality moderators of mood congruency effects on cognition: the role of self-esteem and negative mood regulation.

The authors report 3 experiments on negative mood regulation in which whether mood-congruency or mood-incongruency effects of negative mood on cognition were observed was dependent on an individual's self-esteem (SE). We found that most of our 224 participants tended toward mood-congruent recall under control conditions in which mood was relatively neutral. However, when a negative emotional state was induced, participants low in SE exhibited mood-congruent recall, but high-SE participants did not. In fact, the more negative high-SE participants felt, the more positive were their cognitions (mood-incongruent recall). This pattern was replicated in 3 experiments that included variations in the negative mood inductions and the type of information that was generated or retrieved. Our results suggest a strong link between SE and the regulation of negative emotional states.

Antecedents and contexts of generativity motivation at midlife.

A semiprojective measure of generativity motivation--the desire to contribute to the welfare of society--was developed and applied to a longitudinal sample of educated women. In support of previous theory that generativity represents a fusion of agency and communion, generativity at midlife was related to a combination of adolescent scores on achievement, affiliation, and power motivation. The measure was also related to independent indexes of generative wishes and Q-sort generativity. The importance of contextualizing generativity motivation is demonstrated: Generative women with careers found gratification through work, whereas generative women not working in careers experienced gratification through parenting. Generativity was also related to political consciousness. Finally, as young adults, generative women expressed gratitude toward mentors. The authors discuss theoretical implications for E. H. Erikson's (1950) concept of psychosocial generativity.
