Selenium concentrations in successive layers of bovine incisor enamel showed no concentration gradient and no increase with age. Selenium was taken upt into the continuously-growing rat incisor in proportion to the amount of selenium in the diet. A sensitive (approximately 1 ng Se) and relatively simple fluorimetric method for determining selenium in small amounts of hard tissues is presented.
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity decreased slightly in hamster molars from one to four d after birth. It was inhibited by low concentrations of acetazolamide. Histochemically, the stratum intermedium and stellate reticulum showed an intense staining for CA, whereas ameloblasts increased and odontoblasts decreased their CA activity with age.
The alternating current impedance characteristics of human and bovine enamel slices were measured in vitro. An electrochemical cell containing two platinum gauze electrodes and 0.01 mol/L KCl buffered to pH 7.4 at 20 degrees C was used. The electrodes were attached to a potentiostat that was connected to a microcomputer-controlled frequency-response analyzer. Measurements were made at discrete frequencies between 1 Hz and 65 kHz by application of a sinusoidal potential of 50 mV (rms) across the assembled cell. The impedance was calculated from the input potential and the resulting measured flow of current. For quantitative evaluation of these measurements, an equivalent circuit was postulated. It contained five passive electronic components and accurately modeled the different specimens. Values for individual electrical components in the equivalent circuit were estimated by complex non-linear least-squares regression analysis. This study demonstrated that it is possible to measure and quantitatively distinguish between the impedance characteristics of: permanent human, deciduous human, and bovine enamel, as well as the enamel from a variety of sites from human teeth, some of which had been extracted prior to being fully erupted. Proposals are made as to which physical properties in the specimens are modeled by individual components in the equivalent circuit.
The present study describes the detailed changes in carbonate distribution throughout the different stages of development in human and bovine enamel, from early formation to maturation. Twenty-two human maxillary and mandibular deciduous anterior teeth and 46 bovine teeth were studied. The major mineral ions, calcium and phosphorus, were also analyzed to facilitate comparison of carbonate content with progressing mineralization. The results showed that as enamel matured and mineral concentration increased, carbonate concentration decreased. The observed decrease in percent carbonate per weight enamel mineral may be due to dilution by an influx of relatively carbonate-free mineral, and could, in part, explain the observed increase in crystallinity of enamel mineral as the tissue matures.

A comparison of the radiographs of 59 subjects who had misplaced maxillary canines has been undertaken. The purpose of this study was to see if the position of the canine as seen on a P.A. skull radiograph is comparable with the position of the canine on an orthopantomogram. The results of the study show that there are similarities in the position of the canines as seen on the two radiographs. Where there is a variation between the two films, there is a tendency for the canine angulation to be increased on the orthopantomogram. The misplaced canine also appears further away from the midline on the orthopantomogram.
Orthodontic treatment succeeded in correcting the incisor relationship by a combination of retroclination of the lower labial segment by 2 degrees with a reduction of 1.5 mms in APo and a proclination of the upper labial segment by 7 degrees. There would appear to have been little change in the underlying skeletal pattern. The increase from 1 to 4 in the WITS analysis appears to be related to the downward and anterior change in inclination of the functional occlusal plane. Apart from a possible slight increase, there appeared to be little change in the Skeletal III pattern during retention and the subsequent 33 months. The incisor relationship held with a compensatory proclination of the upper labial segment. The functional occlusal plane reverted partially to its original inclination with a reduction in the WITS analysis to 2.

A case is presented of an inverted upper lateral incisor in an 11-year-old patient. It is believed that involvement of this tooth is previously unreported.
A son and his mother presented with features consistent with a diagnosis of primary failure of eruption. The features of this condition are described together with some aspects of treatment. The impact of the condition on vertical facial growth is discussed.
A case of a boy with only half the complement of normal teeth and taurodontism is reported in association with Klinefelter syndrome (47 XXY).
A removable appliance design has been described which is useful in the traction of ectopic canine teeth and is capable of exerting forces in all planes of space, thus optimizing the potential to achieve a stable and aesthetically pleasing result. It does not substitute for the finesse of a fixed appliance, but is a useful tool for when a fixed appliance is not acceptable to the patient. The appliance is cheap to construct, easy to adjust and keep clean, and is well tolerated by patients.
A case is presented in which two supernumerary teeth developed in the mandibular premolar region during orthodontic treatment. Their presence was only detected on a routine post-treatment radiograph. The potential hazards of space closure with such teeth present are considered, although there were no detrimental effects in the case illustrated.
