The aim of the study is to explore whether gender is a cause of differences in the perception of burden on the part of 39 elderly wife caregivers and 21 elderly husband caregivers of cancer patients. The patients were being treated at an oncological medical center in northern Israel. At the time of interview the patients had no evidence of the disease. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that caregiver gender (i.e., husbands) and age, as well as the patient's psychological distress, predicted greater burden, although gender did not predict greater psychological distress.

Although the use of psychological testing in medical settings has been limited primarily to psychiatric units, it can add appreciably to teaching and diagnostic efforts on a psychiatric consultation-liaison service. A number of methodological and procedural modifications are necessary to incorporate testing into the diagnostic workup. The psychologists' efforts must be viewed as supportive, and must be geared to take into account the unique problems on medical and surgical units. Testing efforts can be most helpful in identifying: a) patients whose response set or attitude predisposes them towards exaggerating or minimizing emotional difficulties, b) individuals with conversion reactions or major psychogenic components complicating their medical disorder, and c) patients in whom an organic brain syndrome complicates medical adjustment. The MMPI and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale are examples of two objective assessment instruments that can aid in dealing with an array of diagnostic problems. A series of test profiles are discussed with specific comments directed towards demonstrating the utility of psychological tests.
Factors predicting handicap and distress were examined in a longitudinal study of 101 patients suffering from recurrent vertigo (dizziness). Analysis of a questionnaire assessing coping strategies yielded four distinct individualised coping styles: problem-focused information-seeking; distraction; denial; and relinquishing responsibility. After controlling for the severity of physical and psychological symptoms and distress, handicap was negatively related to internal locus of control and positively correlated with relinquishing responsibility. Symptoms of somatic anxiety predicted an increase in handicap over a 7 month period, while handicap and somatic anxiety symptoms predicted an increase in distress. These results are interpreted in terms of a reciprocal causal relationship between handicap and distress, mediated partly by somatic symptoms. Parallels with pain, panic and phobia suggest that patients with vertigo might benefit from psychological therapies.
