[Immunochemical homology of HIV-1 envelope proteins and human apolipoprotein AI].

Immunochemical homology of envelope HIV proteins and human apolipoprotein A-I was for the first time detected by ELISA. Immunochemical reactions between antibodies to apoA-I and HIV envelope proteins and between apoA-I and anti-HIV antibodies present in the blood of AIDS patients were shown. These data suggest that the homology of surface HIV proteins and human apoA-I can lead to competitive relationships impeding the involvement of human apoA-I in gene expression regulation.

Endoscopic evaluation of upper abdominal symptoms in adult patients, Saudi Aramco-Ai Hasa Health Center, Saudi Arabia.

Upper oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopies (UGI endoscopies) were performed on adult patients who attended Saudi Aramco Health Centre at Al Hasa, Saudi Arabia, between June 1986 and December 1993, with complaint of upper abdominal pain. During this period, three hundred and fifteen (315) patients were examined. Sixty one percent were females and the rest males. Peptic ulcer disease including gastritis was the most common diagnosis made. Helicobacter pylori-like organisms were documented historically in biopsy samples in 113 of 178 (63%) patients. Nearly all were associated with gastritis; no organisms were reported in normal histology specimens. This confirms the association of this organism with gastritis. Gastric cancer suspected radiologically were not confirmed endoscopically or histologically. It is important to endoscope and biopsy for histology suspected gastric cancer and ulcer; a negative result may save the patient from unnecessary surgery, ideally all normal looking gastric mucosa should be biopsied so that histological gastritis is not missed.

J'ai vu une femme publique'. Sexuality, venereal disease and homoeopathy in nineteenth-century Ghent: the tale of the patient.

Using the casebooks of the Ghent homoeopathic physician Gustave van den Berghe (born Zwevegem, 1836; died Ghent, 1902), this essay reconstructs patients' experience with sexuality and venereal disease during the late 19th century. Van den Berghe's records are uncharacteristic in that they do not translate the patient's descriptions into medical terms. The casebooks therefore represent an opportunity to hear about the disease and its social context in the patient's own words. Reading these case reports carefully, we can begin to understand not only what it meant to suffer from venereal disease, but also what motivated people to seek homoeopathy in general and this healer in particular.

[Interaction of human apolipoprotein AI and HIV-1 envelope proteins with the native and recombinant CD4 receptors].

The method of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to show an interaction of soluble recombinant CD4-receptor (rsCD4) with human apolipoprotein A-1. Competitive interactions between envelope proteins VIH-1 (gp120 and gp41), on the one hand, and human apolipoprotein A-1 with CD4 receptor, present in the cellular membranes of line MT4 human lymphocytes, were demonstrated by the method of flow cytofluorimetry. It was suggested that the competitive interactions between the above proteins could manifest in respect to the apolipoprotein A-1 receptor, which affects the involvement of the latter in the regulation of protein biosynthesis and which leads to a decrease in the body weight of HIV-infected patients.
