[Experience in treating cysticercosis of the brain with azinox].

A case of a patient resident from Tuva who had cerebral cysticercosis is presented. The diagnosis was established on the basis of the available clinical symptoms, brain RCT and NMRI findings and a positive serological reaction (enzyme immunoassay) with C. cellulosus antigen. The patient received 2 courses of treatment with the Russian drug azinox (praziquantel) in a daily dose of 50 mg/kg body weight thrice before meal. Prednisolone was additionally given in a daily dose of 30 mg. The course of treatment was 14 days. The first treatment days were marked by worse headache. Thereafter treatment induced no complications. Better condition, less headache, lower serological reaction titers, regressed cerebral structural changes were observed after the treatment. RCT and NMRI revealed transformation of cysts to high-density foci and calcificates.

Submandibular lymph node enlargement due to cysticercosis infestation.

Lymph node enlargement due to cysticercus infestation has not been reported in human subjects. A 7-y-old girl presented with seizures and a right submandibular lymph node enlargement. Investigations showed inflammatory granulomas in the brain. Fine needle aspiration cytology from submandibular lymph node and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum and cerebrospinal fluid showed the presence of cysticercosis infestation. The case underlines the potential of fine needle aspiration cytology for establishing diagnosis in patients having enlarged lymph nodes.

[Cognitive disorders in an Andean community located in a cysticercosis endemic zone of Ecuador].

Mini mental state tests (MMS) were administered to 227 adults over the age of 40 years living in an Ecuadorian urban Andean community known to be an endemic zone for Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis. The overall prevalence of cognitive impairment was 8.4% (19/227). The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 23.5% (8 cases) in adults over 75 years (n=34). The Hachinski ischemic score for vascular dementia was abnormal in 4 of the 19 adults (21%) exhibiting cognitive impairment. This survey highlighted a high prevalence of dementia in comparison with industrialised countries. Parasitic encephalopathy that was present in one out of five persons in this Andean community could play a part in early damage of cognitive function.

[Characteristics of the meat of cattle with cysticercosis due to experimental infection with the eggs of the tapeworm Taenia saginata and treated with praziquantel].

Eleven test and control bullocks of the Bohemian Spotted breed were studied for the effect of cysticercosis and their treatment with praziquantel on the properties of meat and fat. As found, the disease affected the composition of meat and fat and some of the studied characteristics and technological properties of meat. Although the measles disappeared after treatment, they were not resorbed. Therefore, irrespective of the worsened meat quality, the meat and organs of such animals cannot be evaluated in any other way but according to the valid veterinary regulations.

Experimental chemotherapy of Taenia saginata cysticercosis - a field trial.

The resistance to reinfection of calves following chemotherapy of T. saginata cysticercosis with praziquantel was investigated in a field situation in East Africa. Thirty animals from the treated group were compared with thirty animals from the untreated group after 15 months following chemotherapy. Slicing revealed that 100% in the untreated group were infected, compared with 43.5% of the animals in the treated group. 52% of the untreated group had viable cysts in contrast to only one animal (4.3%) in the treated group. Serological investigations were also conducted on sera obtained before and after chemotherapy. Successful chemotherapy resulted in temporarily increased titres in the treated group as compared to the untreated group.

The possible role of the soil fauna in the epizootiology of cysticercosis in cattle. I. Earthworms -- the biotic factor in a transmission of Taenia saginata eggs.

The role of earthworms in the transmission of Taenia saginata eggs was determined by inoculating 30 earthworms directly: lumbricus terrestris, Allolobophora caliginosa and Eisenia foetida with tapeworm eggs. The remaining earthworms (280 specimens) were examined by contaminating their medium indirectly with T. saginata eggs or segments. It has been concluded that the eggs of tapeworms may be transmitted by the digestive tracts of earthworms. It seems that in the natural environment earthworms may contribute to the horizontal and the vertical spreading eggs in soil and the same may play an important role in the epizootiology of cysticercosis in cattle.

The possible role of the soil fauna in the epizootiology of cysticercosis in cattle. II. Dung beetles--a biotic factor in the transmission of Taenia saginata eggs.

In the present study 510 specimens of dung beetles (Aphodius fimetarius, A. fossor, Sphaeridium scarabaeoides) were examined after exposure to a medium contaminated with Taenia saginata eggs or segments. It has been demonstrated that eggs of tapeworm may be transmitted by the digestive tracts of dung beetles as well as on the surface of Aphodius fimetarius. The above findings suggest that dung beetles, likewise in nature the earthworms, may play an essential role in the spreading eggs of T. saginata. Especially Aphodius fimetarius, because of its passive transmission of eggs on long distances, may be involved in the epizootiology of cysticercosis in cattle.
