A total of 37 silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus), 67 greasy grouper (Epinephelus tauvina), 52 red snapper (Lutjanus coccineus), and 56 silver croaker (Otolithes argenteus) were examined during the period form October 2001 to September 2002 for the purpose of studying the helminth parasites including Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala. All examined fishes were free from any species of Cestoda, Trematoda or Acanthocephala. Only P. argenteus and L. coccineus were infected with Nematoda. The relationships between the helminthic infection rates and the environmental factors were studied.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the characteristics of women who have never used contraception, and do not intend to use it in the future; examine the factors affecting such behavior and intentions; and discuss their health implications. METHODS: Survey data from a nationally representative random sample of Kuwaiti households, collected in a study conducted in 1999 and containing 1502 currently married women, were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Based on the present study, 19% of women had never used contraception and 50% were not using contraception when interviewed. Among current non-users, 42% did not intend to use contraception, and 31% were unsure about use during the following year. Negative attitudes of the respondents and their husbands were the critical factors in non-use and future intentions for non-use. Never-users were older (average age 37.8 years) and of higher parity (6.2) than other women. CONCLUSION: Being older and of higher parity, never-users constitute a high-risk group that may be in need of counseling. Also, negative attitudes towards contraception need modification.

In 2,158 consecutive routine urograms, 85 patients (51 males and 34 females) were found to have typical changes of renal papillary necrosis, an incidence of 3.9% (2.8% in males, 9.4% in females). The changes were bilateral in 60 patients (71.6%) and unilateral in 25 (29.4%). 3 patients were diabetics, 4 had sickle cell anaemia and 7 had obstructive uropathy. 19 patients admitted to analgesic abuse. The remaining 52 patients were idiopathic but a combination of analgesic abuse and dehydration may have been the cause in this group. The possible reasons for the high incidence of RPN especially in females in this hot desert environment are discussed. The literature on the subject is briefly reviewed.
1. Although nurses agree that perioperative instruction is an integral aspect of surgical nursing, in many hospitals, there is little evidence to show that active and planned patient teaching is being conducted. 2. Arab and non-Arab nurses differed in their perceptions about obstacles to patient teaching. Lack of time and language barriers emerged as the two outstanding barriers; lack of encouragement and support from co-nurses and patients' anxiety were considered weak barriers. 3. Failing to address these barriers and disregarding the short- and long-term benefits of structured patient teaching could lead to a new health worker, the health educator. This would further fragment patient care and weaken nurses' credibility.
Cytogenetic analysis was successfully performed at the time of diagnosis in 45 patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia, including 10 children and 35 adults. In approximately 73% of AML patients (35 patients) clonal chromosome abnormalities were detected at the time of diagnosis. Twelve patients (22.8%) had apparently normal karyotypes. Recurring aberrations found in 22 of patients with abnormal karyotypes included t(15;17)(q22;q11), t(8;21)(q22;q22), inv(16)(p13q22), trisomy 8, monosomy 7 and del(5q). The highest frequency of chromosome changes was observed in AML-M3. The occurrence of the classical cytogenetic abnormalities was not a ubiquitous phenomenon. In 11 patients previously not described miscellaneous clonal chromosomal abnormalities were detected. Clonal chromosomal abnormalities detected in AML have shown correlations between specific recurrent chromosomal abnormalities and clinico-biological characteristics of the patients, therefore have been repeatedly shown to constitute markers of diagnostic and prognostic significance. Moreover, ongoing cytogenetic analysis can identify new nonrandom chromosome aberrations in AML and contribute to the identification of novel genes involved in the development of cancer, which can lead to better understanding of the disease pathogenesis.
We report a rare case of Bartsocas Papas Syndrome, a lethal autosomal recessive type of Popliteal Pterigium syndrome, from a consaguineous Pakistani family who had typical anomalies of face, limbs and genitalia with additional peripheral pulmonary stenosis. Antenatal diagnosis and option for termination of pregnancy is advised.
