The incidence and clinical features of reactive arthritis (ReA) following an outbreak of enteritis caused by Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica serovar 4,5,12:b:-were studied in the autumn of 1992. The outbreak occurred in several municipalities and originated from sprouted mung beans. A questionnaire on extra-enteric manifestations such as joint and eye symptoms was mailed 2 to 5 months after the outbreak to all bacteriologically proven cases. Two hundred and forty-six of the 272 (90%) subjects responded to the questionnaire; 224 (91%) reported having had enterocolitis, 22 (9%) were asymptomatic. Sixteen subjects fulfilled the criteria for ReA, and one had irities only. Thus, the incidence of ReA/iritis after S. enterica was 6.9%. Only four of the 155 (3%) subjects aged less than 16 yr developed ReA, as compared with 12 of the 91 (13%) older patients (P < 0.001). The only patient with iritis was also more than 16 yr old. The joint symptoms were oligoarticular in 10 (63%), monoarticular in five (31%) and polyarticular in one (6%). The most frequently affected joints were the wrists, knees and ankles. Joints of upper extremities only were affected in three (19%), of the lower extremities only in six (37%) and of both in seven (44%) subjects. In the majority of the patients ReA was mild. The joint symptoms persisted for less than 1 month in six, 2 to 6 months in five and more than 6 months in five. Thirteen subjects with ReA/iritis were tissue-typed for HLA; four (33%) had HLA-B27.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Observations on the manifestations of salmonellosis infection in various species of laboratory animals made it possible to establish general regularities inherent to this infectious disease, to reveal features depending on metabolic, morphological and microbiological characteristics of a given species of animals. These comparative data are of importance for understanding the factors determining resistance or sensitivity of the macroorganism to infection. Pathomorphological and microbiological investigations of experimental salmonellosis infection in hamsters and guinea-pigs showed that changes characteristic of this infection were manifested considerably weaker in guinea pigs than in hamsters. Of special interest were lesions of the large intestine mucosa wall in guinea pigs and those of the lungs in hamsters. These data may be a subject of a special study. Development and course of the experimental infection were not accompanied by the development of disbacteriosis. Pathogenic bacteria were eliminated on the 2nd--4th day in guinea pigs and on the 5--7th day in hamsters.
The protective effects of an antibiotic polymyxin B (PLB), having lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding activity, on infection-induced endotoxin shock in mice were investigated. Infection with 10(8) colony forming units of an attenuated Salmonella typhimurium aroA strain caused lethal endotoxin shock to ddY mice. Treatment with PLB 1 h post infection (p.i.) resulted in significant reduction of mortality and bacterial numbers in livers. In addition, treatment with PLB 1 h p.i. resulted in a transient increase at the early stage and gradual decline in plasma LPS levels. Although plasma levels of sCD14 and high mobility group box chromosomal protein-1 (HMGB-1) increased according with progression of infection, increases in plasma levels of sCD14 and HMGB-1 were downregulated by treatment with PLB 1 h p.i. However, the lethal shock was not blocked by treatment with anti-CD14 monoclonal antibody at 3 h and 6 h p.i. Interestingly, administration of PLB 6 h p.i. did not show any protective activities, indicating that a time window for effective PLB action is present.

Our objective was to find herd factors associated with pigs testing seropositive for Salmonella. Data were collected from 359 finishing-pig herds in Germany, Denmark, Greece, The Netherlands and Sweden, between 1996 and 1998. Pigs fed non-pelleted feed (dry or wet) had 2- and 2.5-times lower odds of seropositivity, compared to pigs fed pelleted feed. The protective effect of non-pelleted feed over pelleted feed may be ascribed to the structure and composition. Also, pigs that were given whey (to drink or as the liquid part of the diet) had 2.6-times lower odds to test seropositive than pigs not getting whey. Pigs produced in batches in herds with hygienic-lock facilities had >3-times lower odds for testing seropositive compared to pigs in herds where only one or neither factor was present. In herds where the caretaker(s) washed hands consistently before tending to the animals, pigs had 1.5-times lower odds of seropositivity than pigs in herds where the caretaker did not. Pigs which were able to have snout contact with pigs in neighbouring pens (because pen separations were either open or too low) had 1.7-times higher odds to test seropositive compared to pigs for which such contact was prevented. Pigs in herds recruiting from more than three supplier herds had three-times higher odds to test seropositive than pigs in herds which breed their own replacement stock or recruit from a maximum of three supplier herds.
