This paper is to use the power function Simpson's integration formula and some other methods to describe the geometric form of the dentition and edentulous arch in accordance with the theories and principles of tooth arrangement in textbook. The matching equations of artificial dentition and edentulous arch form and size are developed by using the multivariable regression method to analyze and summarize the clinical experiences of prosthodontists. Based on the above facts, a computer program that can be used to aid the dentist to arrange the artificial teeth for full denture is developed with Quick Basic Language and realized them in PC miniprocessors.

The circuit of a monitoring system for respiratory mechanical parameters is designed based on the detection of respiratory flow and pressure. Breaking through the restrictions of traditional methods that can only monitor respiratory rate, this design is able to monitor more than 10 respiratory parameters simultaneously and thus provides a good technical support for improving the properties of homemade monitors.

As care for the chronically ill makes increasing demands upon our medical system, cost-effective methods for addressing those demands are being sought. The use of self-monitoring coupled with telecommunication of results to the health-care provider can be expected to provide a partial solution in the appropriate clinical setting. An electronic spirometer with telecommunication ability for use by cystic fibrosis patients in the home has been developed.
Educational software has been designed and developed for training within the field of diagnostic radiography and is particularly concerned with the science and technology of diagnostic X-rays. The material has been structured into hypertext networks and as such allows interactive exploration of the available information. The courseware development platform was Microsoft Windows and authoring was accomplished using the constructional tool kit ToolBook. The resulting CAL package is highly graphical in nature with a user interface designed to meet the 'friendliness' demands of the end user group. Mechanisms for navigation through, and orientation within, the hypertext have also been established which support two levels of user activities. By changing the level of user freedom, students using the system as a learning tool are restricted to more structured routes than experienced staff using the courseware as an information resource. An aim of this work has been to provide interactive educational activities to support the main courseware, and consequently a novel application has been developed using dynamic data exchange (DDE) and the spreadsheet software Excel. Through a ToolBook front end students can interactively alter an X-ray spectrum by changing the operating conditions of a simulated X-ray tube.
The safety-related circuits and characteristics of IVAC Models 260 and 560 are reviewed, with a discussion of how basic safety and reliability philosophies have been incorporated into the design of these instruments. The uses of IV fluid delivery instruments have expanded from traditional fluid replacement to nutritional, electrolyte, and potent cardiovascular drug therapy, creating the need for and forcing the development of safer and more reliable IV instruments. Standards organizations and regulatory agencies, such as AAMI and Germany's TUV, are implementing more exacting standards for new IV instruments. New designs must begin with a basic safety philosophy and then integrate that philosophy into hardware and software. Critical design areas include flow control mechanism, flow detection, microprocessor failsafe, battery operation, user interface, and software tests of the instrument and the microprocessor itself.
Complete and accurate NMR spectral assignment is a prerequisite for high-throughput automated structure determination of biological macromolecules. However, completely automated assignment procedures generally encounter difficulties for all but the most ideal data sets. Sources of these problems include difficulty in resolving correlations in crowded spectral regions, as well as complications arising from dynamics, such as weak or missing peaks, or atoms exhibiting more than one peak due to exchange phenomena. Smartnotebook is a semi-automated assignment software package designed to combine the best features of the automated and manual approaches. The software finds and displays potential connections between residues, while the spectroscopist makes decisions on which connection is correct, allowing rapid and robust assignment. In addition, smartnotebook helps the user fit chains of connected residues to the primary sequence of the protein by comparing the experimentally determined chemical shifts with expected shifts derived from a chemical shift database, while providing bookkeeping throughout the assignment procedure.
PURPOSE: To explore the use of computer-based qualitative data analysis software packages. SCOPE: The advantages and capabilities of qualitative data analysis software are described and concerns about their effects on methods are discussed. FINDINGS: Advantages of using qualitative data analysis software include being freed from manual and clerical tasks, saving time, being able to deal with large amounts of qualitative data, having increased flexibility, and having improved validity and auditability of qualitative research. Concerns include increasingly deterministic and rigid processes, privileging of coding, and retrieval methods; reification of data, increased pressure on researchers to focus on volume and breadth rather than on depth and meaning, time and energy spent learning to use computer packages, increased commercialism, and distraction from the real work of analysis. CONCLUSIONS: We recommend that researchers consider the capabilities of the package, their own computer literacy and knowledge of the package, or the time required to gain these skills, and the suitability of the package for their research. The intelligence and integrity that a researcher brings to the research process must also be brought to the choice and use of tools and analytical processes. Researchers should be as critical of the methodological approaches to using qualitative data analysis software as they are about the fit between research question, methods, and research design.

Most cases of malformed ears in neonates can be treated by mounting a suitably shaped orthosis. Our objective was to develop a computer-assisted orthosis design and manufacturing system for the treatment of malformed ears. Also, we aimed to manufacture a first experimental orthosis made of nitinol shape-memory alloy wire. First, the target posttherapeutic auricular shape is input from computed tomography scans, and characteristic points and contours are extracted. The shape of the orthosis is then created by tracing the necessary contours automatically. Finally, the orthosis shape data are projected onto one or more approximate planes and autoconverted into numerical control (NC) data for plate groove processing. The nitinol shape-memory alloy wires are inserted in the groove and the shape is memorized by heat treatment. The shape of the manufactured orthosis can be memorized from the generated NC data within 1.0 mm of error. Stahl's ear in a 9-month-old baby was treated 7 months ago by mounting the orthosis manufactured by the system. The developed system allows the design and manufacture of orthoses made of nitinol shape-memory alloy wire for the treatment of malformed ears.
A personal computer based image processing system for the mapping and subsequent analysis of local areas of the human body requiring no more than 180 degrees of vision is described. The operations of image capture and data extraction are undertaken in real time and photogrammetric reconstruction takes typically a further 30 s. Accuracy of the system has been assessed by photogrammetrically reconstructing 37 points whose coordinates had been precisely established by traditional survey techniques. An average discrepancy between surveyed and reconstructed positions of 0.485 mm was obtained; this level of accuracy compares highly favourably with results achieved using alternative methods and which do not have the level of automation inherent in the described system. The system has been developed specifically to provide quantitative values for parameters of particular interest in skin expansion surgery: consequently the post-reconstruction facilities available in this initial system are surface area and enclosed volume calculations and shaded surface display. Further development work currently in progress is also briefly discussed.
A microcomputer-based biofeedback training program is presented that can be used (with minor modifications) under different hardware configurations. The program interacts friendly with the user, providing access and recording of up to eight different channels at the same time (although only four can be visualized). Within each channel, the user has control upon eight different variables (protocol), independently of each other. Different displays, sounds, sampling speeds, schedules of reinforcement, graphical presentation of the data and statistical analysis are provided to accommodate the feedback properties to various clinical and experimental applications.
BACKGROUND: Minimization is a dynamic randomization method for clinical trials. Although recommended by many researchers, the utilization of minimization has been seldom reported in randomized trials mainly because of the controversy surrounding the validity of conventional analyses and its complexity in implementation. However, both the statistical and clinical validity of minimization were demonstrated in recent studies. Minimization random allocation system integrated with blinding function that could facilitate the implementation of this method in general clinical trials has not been reported. SYSTEM OVERVIEW: The system is a web-based random allocation system using Pocock and Simon minimization method. It also supports multiple treatment arms within a trial, multiple simultaneous trials, and blinding without further programming. METHODS: This system was constructed with generic database schema design method, Pocock and Simon minimization method and blinding method. It was coded with Microsoft Visual Basic and Active Server Pages (ASP) programming languages. And all dataset were managed with a Microsoft SQL Server database. Some critical programming codes were also provided. SIMULATIONS AND RESULTS: Two clinical trials were simulated simultaneously to test the system's applicability. Not only balanced groups but also blinded allocation results were achieved in both trials. DISCUSSIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: Practical considerations for minimization method, the benefits, general applicability and drawbacks of the technique implemented in this system are discussed. Promising features of the proposed system are also summarized.
