The prenatal attenuation of brain/body development through interactions between growth hormone, triiodothyronine and testosterone during prenatal development of female neonates.

The relations of serum growth hormone (GH), free testosterone (T), and free triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations to the head circumference, height, and weight were studied in the human neonates. Blood was taken from the umbilical cord immediately after the birth, to measure the hormone concentrations. GH was found to be inversely correlated with the bodily measures in the female neonates; there were no significant correlations between these variables in males. In females, free T3 negatively linearly correlated with GH, and positively linearly correlated with the neonatal head circumference, height, and weight. Serum free T levels was found to be positively linearly correlated with GH, and negatively linearly correlated with the neonatal body measures in the same subjects. It was suggested that GH may exert growth reducing effects through T3 and T during perinatal development.

Development and transformation of the ductal plate in the developing human liver.

The livers of 15 embryos and fetuses measuring from 0.5 cm to 21 cm in crown-rump length were examined. The liver of the smallest embryo showed a sheet of hepatocytes without any ductal plates or intrahepatic bile ducts. Transformation of the hepatocytes of a hilar ductal plate was first observed in a 1.8-cm embryo. A 10.0-cm fetus had ductal plates virtually throughout the liver. Focal transformation of the flattened cells of the ductal plates into tubules composed of columnar or cuboidal ductal cells was observed. Mature interlobular ducts were observed predominantly in the hilum whereas scattered primitive interlobular ducts were scattered throughout the parenchyma. The transformation of hepatocytes into interlobular bile ducts thus seemed to occur in two stages: in the first, the hepatocytes of the ductal plate became flattened and developed increased cytokeratin; in the second, these flattened cells became focally cuboidal or columnar, lost their carcinoembryonic antigen, became strongly positive for epithelial membrane antigen, and formed tubules and primitive interlobular bile ducts.

Development of a practicable method for isolation and identification of dengue viruses in developing countries.

We sought a practicable method for isolation and identification of dengue viruses in South-East Asia. We compared two mosquito cell lines, C6/36 and TRA-284-SFG, for virus isolation and two identification methods, immunofluorescent staining of infected cells with serotype-specific mouse monoclonal antibodies and a sandwich-type enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with conventional mouse hyperimmune ascitic fluids. We found that the combination of TRA-284-SFG cells and ELISA is a useful and feasible method in developing countries.

Nutrition and development of children from poor rural areas. V. Nutrition and behavioral development.

2 groups of 17 mother-child units each were studied longitudinally, 1 with the usual feeding habits which resulted in undernutrition of the child, and the other sufficient with food supplementation. From the 24th week on, the supplemented developed a different pattern of interaction with mother and environment; they slept less, barely used the cradle during the day, played more in the yard, and refused to be carried wrapped up. They moved about 6 times as much as the nonsupplemented and exhibited complex behavior. They were more restless, playful, demanding, and disobedient. It is concluded that better nutrition caused an increased level in the child, which made him more demanding, and in turn this increased interaction with his mother and established a feedback system, which in turn modified his behavior.

[A body of one's own. Sexual development and physical female development in the mother-child relationship].

Prevalent psychoanalytic opinion has it that (sexually) femaleness is marked by a severe deficiency. Accordingly it is widely held that the acknowledgement of female sexuality is primarily a matter for fathers rather than mothers. The author takes a different stance, insisting on the opportunities inherent in the mother-daughter relationship to the extent that it both permits and encourages pleasurable self-examination and acceptance of the body on the part of the growing girl. In the therapeutic connection, the author calls for a form of remedial socialisation to fill the specific lacunae that have developed around female sexuality.

Development and optimization of a fluorescent differential display PCR system for studying bovine embryo development in vitro.

Differential display is a widely used methodology to identify genes that are differentially expressed in biological samples. We developed a new protocol for the amplification and recovery of differentially expressed genes from extremely small initial amounts of RNA (10 to 25 pg mRNA) from preimplantation bovine embryos. The cDNAs generated with an anchor primer, associated with a universal sequence, were amplified with an arbitrary primer and a single fluorescently labeled primer. Amplification products were easily visualized with a fluorescence scanner, without the need for radioisotopes. Nineteen isolated fragments were cloned and sequenced, confirming the expected primer sequences and allowing the recognition and identification of gene transcripts involved in bovine embryonic physiology.

Self-efficacy as a positive youth development construct: conceptual bases and implications for curriculum development.

Self-efficacy denotes people's beliefs about their capabilities to perform in different situations. It functions as a multilevel and multifaceted set of beliefs that influence how people feel, think, motivate themselves, and behave. Self-efficacy beliefs are informed by enactive attainment, vicarious experience, imaginal experiences, social persuasion, as well as physical and emotional states. These beliefs are mediated by cognitive, motivational, affective, and selection processes to generate actual performance. Self-efficacy development is closely intertwined with a person's experiences, competencies, and developmental tasks in different domains at different life stages. This paper outlines the conceptualization of the construct and presents how its determinants are used in Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes (P.A.T.H.S.), supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, to help adolescents cultivate self-efficacy.

Prenatal development of the adrenal gland in the pig (Sus scrofa domestica). Part I. The differentiation and development of the adrenal cortex primordium in the first half of pregnancy.

The differentiation and development of the adrenal gland in pig embryos from 18 to 48 days of pregnancy were investigated with histological and histochemical methods and in electron microscope. Primordia of the adrenal cortex appear at 21st day as two symmetrical streaks of the condensed mesenchymal cells between the mesonephros, aorta dorsalis and mesenterium. The capillaries and chromaffinoblasts penetrate the primordium. The mesenchymal cells differentiate into adrenal cortical cells. In the differentiating cells both, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum as well as the number of mitochondria increase. The shape of the cells changes and their projections transform into microvilli. The fetal cortical cells have features of the steroidogenic cells with abundant SER in whorls and numerous mitochondria with tubular cristae. The giant mitochondria and dense lamellar bodies were observed in these cells. The microvilli on cell surfaces form a microlabirynth in intercellular and perivascular spaces.

The effect of ethanol upon early development in mice and rats. XIV. The effect of acute intoxication with beer and wine upon preimplantation development in rats.

The preimplantation effect of acute intoxication during the preimplantation period of pregnancy (i.p. or i.v. injection on day 4) with beer and wine has been investigated on female albino rats (Wistar strain). The following criteria were applied for checking preimplantation development: mean number of embryos/animal; topographical distribution of the embryos; developmental stage attained; occurrence of pathological embryonic forms. The control on day 5 of pregnancy revealed no significant effect upon the developmental criteria used. The data obtained are compared with our own previous results.

[Relations between degree of intellectual development and physical development as well as bioelectric function of the brain in retarded children].

The subject of our study is a correlation between physical development, level of intelligence and bioelectrical activity of the brain in children with mental deficiency. The results have shown a marked correlation between the level of intelligence and some features of the EEG pattern, but it was not possible to establish a correlation between the somatic and mental states.

Developing world. Patients' choice of anaesthetic techniques in a developing country.

A study of the choice between general and local anaesthetic techniques among 200 post-operative Nigerian patients was conducted, using a questionnaire. The patients were interviewed between two and seven days after various types of surgery. Most of the patients (59.5%) preferred general anaesthesia. The commonest reason was fear with psychological upset if they are awake during surgery. This appears to be a basic human feeling which does not appear to be related to sophistication or level of development. Adequate pre-operative communication between doctors and patients should minimise this apprehension. 18% preferred local anaesthetic techniques while 21.5% would not mind either.

[The mirror stage ("Stade du Miroir" by J. Lacan) as a crucial stage of development for finding one's identity - normal, neurotic, psychotic development].

The socalled "Mirror Stage" ("Stade du Miroir" by J. Lacan) seems to be a normal stage of development between the sixth and the eighteenth month of age. In the centre of this study you find terms of developmental psychology and especially of psychoanalysis like: 'mother-child relationship', 'first relationship to objects', 'passage from primary to secondary narcism', 'ego-ideal' and 'ideal of the ego' and others. The Mirror Stage seems to be especially important for the formation of the identity: wether the child becomes 'normal', 'neurotic' or 'psychotic'. Here we also find terms, invented by Lacan like the 'Real', the 'Imaginary' and the 'Symbolic'.

[Morphologic features of immune interrelationships in the feto-placental system in development of a large fetus and in retardation of intrauterine fetal development].

Indirect criteria of the value of the immune placenta barrier in case of a large foetus are distinguished: relatively small volume of the fibrinoid substance, moderate synthesis by the syncytial epithelium of glucosaminoproteoglycans (GAPG), slight lymphoplasma cell infiltrates with a marked suppressor influence, the lack of antigens HLA = Dr on the trophoblast and formation of the adequate interrelation ship between the immune dependent placental structure and the thymus of the large foetus this allowing to retain the foetus up to 38-40 weeks or even more. In case of delay in the intrauterine foetus development there is a sharp increase of the fibrinoid substance, focal enhancement of GAPG production by the syncytial cells, decrease of the suppressor activity and the appearance in some cases in the trophoblast of antigens to HLA=Dr this being probably the manifestation of a premature exhaustion of compensatory-adaptive reactions in the placenta.

[A new method for evaluating psychomotor development based on information from parents. The Spanish version of the Kent Infant Development Scale].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this dissertation research was to design, standardize and validate the Spanish version of the Kent Infant Development Scale (KIDS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This questionnaire is based on information obtained from the parents. It was translated into Spanish and named "Escala de Desarrollo Infantil de Kent" (EDIK). The EDIK normative data were collected from the parents of 662 healthy infants (ages 1 to 15 months) in pediatric clinics in Catalonia (Spain). RESULTS: Test-retest reliability (r = 0.99; p < 0.001), interjudge reliability (r = 0.98; p < 0.001) and internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.9947) were determined. An "r' of 0.96 was obtained when EDIK scores were compared to their estimated developmental ages obtained from the Denver Developmental Scale. The correlation of the infants' chronological age and their EDIK was 0.96 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The high reliability and validity correlation coefficients demonstrate the sound psychometric properties of the EDIK. It appears to be a useful and acceptable instrument in measuring the developmental status of infants by using the reports of their parents.
