Bee and bee products allergy in Turkish beekeepers: determination of risk factors for systemic reactions.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic reactions due to bee stings in beekeepers varies in different regions of the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of sting reactions and the risk factors for developing systemic reactions in Turkish beekeepers. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 1250 beekeepers to be completed in seven different cities of Turkey. A total of 494 (39.6 %) questionnaires were returned. RESULTS: There were 444 subjects (89.9 %) with a history of sting exposure in the previous 12 months. Systemic reactions were present in 29 subjects (6.5 %) and nine (2 %) reactions were anaphylactic. Fifty-five percent of beekeepers reported more than 100 bee stings in the previous year. When systemic reactions were controlled by age and duration of beekeeping in a logistic regression model, seasonal rhinitis (OR: 4.4, 95 % CI: 1.2-11.5), perennial rhinitis (OR: 4.6, 95 % CI: 1.2-18.2), food allergy (OR:7.0, 95 % CI: 2.0-25.0), physician-diagnosed asthma (OR: 8.0, 95 % CI: 2.5-25.6), having an atopic disease of any type (OR: 3.3, 95 % CI: 1.2-8.7) and having two or more atopic diseases (OR: 10.9, 95 % CI: 3.5-33.8) were significantly associated with systemic reactions due to bee sting in the previous 12 months. CONCLUSION: The incidence of systemic reactions in Turkish beekeepers is low, which might be due to the protective effect of a high frequency of bee stings. The risk of systemic reactions increases approximately three-fold when one atopic disease is present and eleven-fold when two or more concurrent atopic diseases are present with respect to no atopic disease.

[Peyronie's disease. Evaluation of 3 therapeutic modalities: propoleum, laser and simultaneous propoleum-laser].

OBJECTIVES: To compare the results of treatment of peyronie's disease with propoleum, laser, and simultaneous propoleum-laser. METHODS: Prospective research. Twenty-eight patients with Peyronie's disease from the hospitals Freyre de Andrade,Fajardo, Clinico Quirúrgico y Habana Campo were studied between May 2002 and August 2003. They were divided into three groups: 1) treatment with propoleum: 10 patients; 2) treatment with laser: 8 patients; and 3) treatment with propoleum + laser: 10 patients. A registered formula of Propoleum powder was employed in daily 900 mg capsules over six months. 30 sessions of laser were applied to the plaque divided in periods of 10 sessions every 2 months. STUDY VARIABLES: age, race, date of disease start/clinical improvement correlation, beginning of improvement after treatment. Data were processed in a statistical software (Epinfo-6) and multivariate analysis with non parametric methods was employed. RESULTS: Mean age was between 4th and 7th decade in all groups. Caucasian race was predominant. The propoleum-laser group achieved the greater diminishment of the plaque among those with one or two years of disease evolution. Pain was not the main symptom in these patients. The greater diminishment of the curvature was obtained in the propoleum groups, with a mean diminishmeet of 10.8 (propoleum only) and 10.3 (Propoleum+ laser) in comparison to the laser group with a mean decrease of 8 and mean increase of 12.6. Mean plaque diminishment measured clinically was 2.3 cm and 1.5 cm in the propoleum groups, respectively, and 1.2 cm in the laser group. Ultrasound measurement mean diminishment was 2.3 mm and 12.16 mm in the propoleum groups. The laser results were not comparable due to the low number of patients in relation to the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: 1-best results appeared in the groups treated with propoleum in patients with 1-2 years of disease. 2-Diminishment of the curvature angle, physical or ultrasound measurement of the plaques was greater in the propoleum groups. 3-After the start of treatment, the propoleum-laser group referred early improvements, and the propoleum group referred continuous progressive improvement; only a few patients in the laser group referred improvement. 4-Treatment with propoleum was more effective and laser increased its action, being propoleum in monotherapy less complex in its application and with a better cost-benefit ratio.

Separation of structurally related flavonoids by GC/MS technique and determination of their polarographic parameters and potential carcinogenicity.

The present study deals with the investigation of the naturally occurring derivatives of the benzo[b]pyran-4-one - flavonoids - chrysin, tectochrysin and galangin, and with the effect of minor changes in their chemical structure on their separation using GC/MS. In the relation to their close chemical structure, their basic polarographic parameters were also investigated. Their potential carcinogenicity index tg alpha was determined by DC polarography experiments in the presence of alpha-lipoic acid. The tg alpha values for chrysin, tectochrysin and galangin were all under 0.180. This indicates a very minor carcinogenic potential that does not prevent the use of the investigated flavonoids in human.

[Evaluation of the cario-static effect of Nidus vespae on biofilm model in vitro].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Nidus vespae's cario-static effect on biofilm model in vitro. METHODS: A four-organism bacterial consortium was grown in a biofilm model on hydroxyapatite (HA) discs in a continuous culture system and exposed to repeated solution pulsing respectively. There were three parallel-connected flow cells in the model, so were the three groups with different solution pulsed in. Negative control group was pulsed with distilled water, positive control group was pulsed with 250 mmol/L sucrose solution as well. While 4.0 g/L Nidus vespae together with 250 mmol/L sucrose solution was pulsed in the experiment group. During the experiment, the pH responses against the pulses were recorded. After the 6 pulses, the biofilm surface structure was observed with a scan electron microscope and the population on the biofilm was enumerated. RESULTS: Nidus vespae can significantly inhibit the adherence of Streptococcus mutans to HA discs compared with the control group of 250 mmol/L sucrose pulsed in, and can facilitate the remove of acid products. It is also found that the extra-cellular polysaccharide is reduced with the pulsing of Nidus vespae. CONCLUSION: Nidus vespae in the biofilm model can partially decrease the cariogenic response of sucrose solution pulsed in.

[The antimicrobiological analysis of procalment solution].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: to analyse the antimicrobial activity of procalment solutions. The antimicrobial action of procalment solution and its components to the microorganism standard cultures (Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, sporic bacteria and fungi) and bacteria clinical strains has been studied. It has been found that the sensitivity of bacteria to procalment solutions depends on the structure of microorganism cell wall: procalment solutions are antimicrobially active against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae and sporic bacteria, act slightly on Corynebacterium diphteriae and Candida albicans. Gram-negative bacteria are more resistant to procalment solutions than Gram-positive: 54.6-72.8% of Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae) are resistant to procalment.

[Morphological evaluation of the process of aseptic skin ulcer healing under the action of prolidoxide ointment].

The effect of prolidoxide ointment on the healing of aseptic skin ulcers in rats was evaluated in terms of skin morphology. Prolidoxide exhibited more pronounced healing action than the analogous (with respect to the composition of natural components) reference ointment ("Wundahyl"). It is recommended to use prolidoxide for accelerated skin surface healing in the first and second stage of the ulceration process.

Evaluation of a new antiseptic based on natural substances.

In this study the authors compared different forms of a new antiseptic (Acisept), based on natural substances, with a number of well-established skin disinfectants routinely used in their hospital. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed. The excellent in vitro results were not quite matched by those in vivo. On the other hand, no statistically significant difference was observed between the in vivo results of Acisept and those of the reference products. Acisept appears to be, in every one of its commercial forms, an efficient skin disinfectant comparable to those currently used in the authors' hospital. A lack of remanence was found in both Acisept and the reference products.

[The effect of ionizing radiation and immunomodulators on the development of the graft versus host reaction].

The reaction "transplant against host" (RTAH) was performed by subcutaneous transplantation of popliteal lymphnode lymphocytes of C57Bl/6 mice (CBA X C57Bl/6)F1 mice. gamma-Irradiation of donors with a dose of 6 Gy was shown to activate the function of T-lymphocytes, effectors in RTAH. Recipients irradiated with the same dose exhibited a drastic decrease in the ability of the organism to restrict RTAH. Decaris administered 15 min after irradiation of donors removed the postirradiation RTAH increase. In nonirradiated donors or recipients, the immunomodulators increased RTAH.
