A neural network controller for hydronic heating systems of solar buildings.

An artificial neural network (ANN)-based controller for hydronic heating plants of buildings is presented. The controller has forecasting capabilities: it includes a meteorological module, forecasting the ambient temperature and solar irradiance, an indoor temperature predictor module, a supply temperature predictor module and an optimizing module for the water supply temperature. All ANN modules are based on the Feed Forward Back Propagation (FFBP) model. The operation of the controller has been tested experimentally, on a real-scale office building during real operating conditions. The operation results were compared to those of a conventional controller. The performance was also assessed via numerical simulation. The detailed thermal simulation tool for solar systems and buildings TRNSYS was used. Both experimental and numerical results showed that the expected percentage of energy savings with respect to a conventional controller is of about 15% under North European weather conditions.

Computer aided techniques for crew station design: work-space organizer-WORG; workstation layout generator-WOLAG.

Two interactive models for crew station design are discussed. WORG is developed for arranging workstations within a work-space. WOLAG aims at generating the layout of the instrument panel at each station for sit-stand duty. Both models collect evaluative measures for the designs generated. The input data, internal structure, and output files of both WORG and WOLAG are discussed, together with actual sample outputs.

Evaluating dissolution profiles of an anti-HIV agent using ANOVA and non-linear regression models in JMP software.

A powerful statistical method was designed using JMP software to detect factors contributing to differences in the dissolution process of an antiviral drug delivered in an oral dosage form. Due to the large number of dissolution media available for solid dosage forms, a statistical method to choose the appropriate medium is critical for testing solid dosage forms. We have developed an analysis of variance model to analyze the overall dissolution profile obtained from the various media. In vitro tests were performed using a standard USP basket apparatus (Vankel Inc., Cary, NC), and the analysis used the restricted/residual maximum likelihood method (JMP software) to partition the variance due to media (pH 1.2 and 6.8, +SDS, water alone and at pH 1.2 with pepsin), time (repeated measure) and capsule (random effect). This allowed correct standard error estimates to be used to compare dissolution in different media using planned linear contrasts. The model provided us with statistically powerful criteria to identify significant differences in capsule dissolution across time and to quantify capsule-to-capsule population variance estimate. The time specific linear contrasts showed the largest sum of square values (SS) occurred at 180 min (SS=0.268) for the simulated SIF (pH 6.8) versus SGF (pH 1.2) comparison (DF=166, MSE=3.92 x 10(-3)). The dissolution processes were further characterized using a non-linear regression fit of a power law function to the data for each capsule. This resulted in a method to statistically differentiate between the dissolution processes of the capsules in different media.

A new molecular simulation software package--Peking University Drug Design System (PKUDDS) for structure-based drug design.

We present a comprehensive molecular simulation program package, the Peking University Drug Design System (PKUDDS), which runs on personal computers. PKUDDS has been developed mainly for computer-aided drug design using the methods of two-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships, three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships, molecular docking, and database screening. This study presents an overview of its functionality, especially of methods developed in our group. PKUDDS uses genetic algorithms in molecular docking, conformational analysis, and quantitative structure-activity relationships as the most useful optimization technique. A user-friendly graphical interface provides easy access to many functions of PKUDDS. We report some examples of our considerable research using PKUDDS.

Organizational aspects and implementation of data systems in large-scale epidemiological studies in less developed countries.

BACKGROUND: In the conduct of epidemiological studies in less developed countries, while great emphasis is placed on study design, data collection, and analysis, often little attention is paid to data management. As a consequence, investigators working in these countries frequently face challenges in cleaning, analyzing and interpreting data. In most research settings, the data management team is formed with temporary and unskilled persons. A proper working environment and training or guidance in constructing a reliable database is rarely available. There is little information available that describes data management problems and solutions to those problems. Usually a line or two can be obtained in the methods section of research papers stating that the data are doubly-entered and that outliers and inconsistencies were removed from the data. Such information provides little assurance that the data are reliable. There are several issues in data management that if not properly practiced may create an unreliable database, and outcomes of this database will be spurious. RESULTS: We have outlined the data management practices for epidemiological studies that we have modeled for our research sites in seven Asian countries and one African country. CONCLUSION: Information from this model data management structure may help others construct reliable databases for large-scale epidemiological studies in less developed countries.

A front-end automation tool supporting design, verification and reuse of SOC.

This paper describes an in-house developed language tool called VPerl used in developing a 250 MHz 32-bit high-performance low power embedded CPU core. The authors showed that use of this tool can compress the Verilog code by more than a factor of 5, increase the efficiency of the front-end design, reduce the bug rate significantly. This tool can be used to enhance the reusability of an intellectual property model, and facilitate porting design for different platforms.

Medical image rendering.

Three-dimensional (3-D) visualization has recently become an established discipline in medicine. Although numerous visualization methods are currently available, a unified framework to describe and study them has been lacking. Often, the functionally independent operations in a method are integrated among themselves or with the method itself for computational efficiency. The two main aims of this article are (1) to review the methods in a unified way in a general setting so that it becomes possible to appreciate the interrelationship and interdependence of methods, and (2) to show how a variety of new methods emerge with potentially improved renditions in this unified treatment. To this end, we introduce an operator notation to describe concisely the basic 3-D imaging transforms commonly used in visualization and identify a comprehensive set of basic transforms. We describe several new basic transforms for filtering and interpolating structures and scenes, and for rendering surfaces and volumes. We show the power of the principle of treating 3-D imaging methodologies as comprising an appropriate combination of the basic operators. We show how such a treatment leads to a great variety of new rendering methods and how many such methods can lead to improved portrayal. We develop separate transform sequences to optimally render robust and frail structures (ie, structures represented in scenes with well-defined and ill-defined boundaries, respectively).

[Research and development on the dynamic system for detecting the force of acupuncture needle during the acupuncture process in the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine].

Manipulations are essential to the acupuncture curative effect. With the technique limited, the researches on acupuncture manipulations can only be carried out with respect to the senses and experience of doctors and patients, thus seriously impeding the modernization and internationalization of acupuncture. Both the modern integration technology of transducer and the biomechanical principles are applied to develop a detection system that can measure the interaction force between the manipulator and the manipulated patient on the needle at each kind of manipulation. Through clinical practice, the force waveforms acting on needle with the manipulations of symmetrical twirling-rotating and symmetrical lifting-inserting were recorded so as to realize the quantitative, objective and real-time detection of the force during the acupuncture process, which provided a new experimentation means and analysis method for the improvement of clinical curative effect and quantitative research of acupuncture and meridians.
