A report of swine erysipelas in a litter of piglets.

Out of a litter of 7 two-week old Landrace piglets, 6 developed cutaneous haemorrhages especially on the limbs and ears. Two of these piglets died within 24 hours of the haemorrhages appearing whilst the other 4 recovered following penicillin therapy. The histopathological lesions were centred around the smaller vessels of the dermis and hypodermis. These included hyperaemia, leukostasis and intravascular fibrin coagulation or thrombosis. Bacterial emboli were present within the vessels of the skin, spleen, liver and kidney and loose in the areolar tissue of the dermis and hypodermis. Other lesions included scattered but extensive dermal and hypodermal haemorrhages and a mild cellular infiltration of the dermis and hypodermis.

[Simple technic for the specific detection of the protective effectiveness of bacterial antigens].

A simple method is given for the specific proof of protective immunogenicity of bacterial antigens. Antibody-antigen-complexes isolated by immunoelectrophoresis are applied for immunization of mice. The subsequent challenge with live virulent bacteria gives information about the protective immunity of the mice. When using that technique, special isolation and purification of the antigens is not necessary.

Histoautoradiographic studies on the fate of 3H-thymidine labelled L-forms of E. rhusiopathiae in albino mice.

L-forms of Erysipelotrix rhusiopathiae labelled with 3H-thymidine were intravenously administered to albino mice. Autoradiographic studies of the liver, kidney and spleen were undertaken at periods ranging from 2 minutes to 15 days. On the second minute following the administration of the radioactive material whole labelled microorganisms and chains of silver grains were recovered in the examined organs. Up to the 15th minute labels were observed also in the cells of the RES. Following the 30th minute the silver grains were positioned at a characteristic site in the Golgi region of the hepatocytes. At the same time in the kidney they were localized in the glomerular space and in the lumen of the renal tubules, whereas in the spleen - mainly around the megakaryocytes. By the 15th day labelling gradually diminished, single silver grains being found over some nuclei of megakaryocytes, liver and kidney parenchymal cells. The present study throws light over some aspects of the interrelationship between the micro- and macroorganism concerning the mechanisms of desintegration, elimination and the uptaking of labelled microbial DNA.

[Aerogenic immunization against swine erysipelas with Spirovak erysipelas vaccine "Dessau"].

Reported in this paper is the use of Spirovak erysipelas live vaccine for aerogenic immunisation against swine erysipelas under conditions of floor keeping. Two different aerosol spray nozzles were used. Results which will be applicable under practice conditions were achieved by means of a vortex injector nozzle. One single aerogenic immunisation, 4 to 12 X 10(7) live germs per cubic metre, provided sufficient protection against infection.

[Studies of the occurrence of erysipelas bacteria in healthy swine in the Hungarian People's Republic with reference to possible use of erysipelas live vaccines].

The number of pigs for slaughter which carried erysipelas bacteria has gone down continuously in Hungary. The incidence of erysipelas declined in parallel. That improving trend has been attributed to better conditions of large-stock keeping and to the exclusive use of inactivated vaccine. Careful consideration should be given to epizootiological aspects as well as to the environment, whenever live vaccines are to be used. Veterinarians bear growing responsibility in that particular context.

Recognition of IL1-activated chondrocytes in porcine articular cartilage.

A polyclonal antiserum has been raised against interleukin 1 (IL1)-induced epitopes on the surface of porcine articular chondrocytes. Using this antiserum in immunolocalization studies we have been able to identify individual chondrocytes in situ both in experimentally activated articular cartilage and in pathological tissue from pigs with induced polyarthritis.

Postembedding immunohistochemical demonstration of antigen in experimental polyarthritis using plastic embedded whole joints.

A method is presented for the immunohistochemical demonstration of antigens in whole undecalcified joints of small laboratory animals. With this method of tissue preparation, involving embedding in a medium mainly based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, preservation of antigenicity is satisfactory. Antigens can be demonstrated in 2 micron sections by either immunofluorescence or immunoperoxidase and an indirect technique. Therefore in addition to the morphological analysis of joint alterations in experimental polyarthritis, there is now an opportunity to trace the inciting antigen and to study in parallel the enzymatic equipment of the cells involved, using consecutive sections from a single block of tissue.
