Reproductive failure occurred in a swine herd in which the epizootiology of enteroviruses and the porcine parvovirus were being studied. Three virgin boars that were seropositive for the parvovirus were mated to seronegative, previously unmated gilts. The 11 gilts that farrowed had small litters, with high perinatal mortality. The remaining 12 gilts were marketed because of infertility, and the reproductive tracts were examined. Pathologic findings included early embryonal death attributed to viral infection. After the reproductive failure, all gifts and boars were seropositive for the parvovirus, suggesting that the reproductive failure was associated with a parvovirus infection.
The aim of the study was to evaluate indicators of response to zidovudine monotherapy in terms of progression to AIDS and death in a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroconverters. From a larger observational epidemiological cohort of 1,024 HIV seroconverters we identified 315 persons on zidovudine monotherapy. In this treated cohort, age, sex, risk group, constitutional symptoms, CD4 cell count, and p24 antigen levels at initiation of treatment and 6 months later were examined separately for two outcomes, AIDS and death, using standard survival methods. The variables measured at the visit at which zidovudine monotherapy was initiated that predicted more rapid progression to AIDS were CD4 cell count (RH = 2.61); constitutional symptoms (RH = 2.56); p24 antigenaemia level (RH = 2. 17); and subsequent change in CD4 cell count (> 30% decline) contributed additional predictive information (RH = 2.70). Results were similar for mortality, and did not vary significantly by risk group. In a tested subset of patients, p24 antigenaemia was associated with high levels of plasma RNA viral load. The median number of HIV RNA copies was about 28,000 copies/ml among p24 antigen-positive individuals and about 7,700 copies/ml among participants who were persistently negative for p24 antigenaemia. CD4 cell count, symptoms and p24 antigenaemia at the start of therapy and CD4 cell decline after initiation of treatment are early indicators of disease progression in zidovudine-treated patients. The combined use of these indicators may help to better predict who will respond to zidovudine or to other antiretroviral therapies.

A total of 136 patients with acute icteric hepatitis C, including patients with known outcome, were examined. Therefore, 46 serological samples, obtained from 13 patients with subsequent remission, and 63 samples, obtained from 13 patients, who subsequently developed the chronic disease stage, were analyzed. The serum of known outcome patients were examined, by using the immune-enzyme analysis method, to the antibodies of both class IgG, and IgM. Differences in the dynamics of the immune humoral response were established with due regard for a pathological course process, including the acute disease stage. The obtained results are interesting because of their prognostic values.
Vaccination was performed by influenza virus vaccine, trivalent type A and B. We vaccinated about 50,000 persons in Poland in different groups of age. HI and NI tests were used for testing antibody level for A/Taiwan/1/86 (H1N1), A/Shanghai/16/89 (H3N2) and B/Yamagata/16/89. The rise of antibody level was statistically significant.
In order to determine if canine coronavirus (CCV) could be transmitted to pigs, two dogs were inoculated orally with virulent CCV. After 24 h, the dogs were moved to an isolation room that contained three three-day-old pigs. A wire mesh fence, allowing close contact between the animals, separated the dogs from the pigs. The dogs and pigs were observed for 14 days for clinical signs of disease. Samples of blood were obtained from dogs and pigs immediately before the dogs were inoculated with virus and 14 and 28 days later. The dogs developed mild clinical signs of an infection, but the pigs remained normal throughout the observation period. The dogs shed CCV for eight days after exposure. All three pigs developed neutralizing antibodies against CCV and transmissible gastroenteritis virus by 14 days after they were exposed to the dogs.

Simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) are lentiviruses that cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-like illnesses in susceptible macaque monkeys and are used in the study of AIDS (1). In November 1988, CDC published guidelines to minimize the risk of SIV transmission to research laboratory workers (2). This report summarizes the investigation of two laboratory workers who seroconverted following occupational exposures to SIV.
