Polystyrene latex adsorption at the gold/electrolyte interface.

Irreversible deposition of polystyrene latex particles (average diameter, 1.5 microm) on various solid/electrolyte interfaces was studied experimentally by using the direct microscope observation method. The substrate surfaces included bare mica (reference interface), gold covered mica (layer thickness of 50 nm), and solid gold plate. The morphology and thickness of the gold layer on mica was determined by atomic force microscopy. Well-defined transport conditions of particles were created by using the new impinging-jet cell. A characteristic feature of the cell was that the suspension stream was directed obliquely to the interface. This unique characteristic was advantageous allowing one for direct, in situ, observation of particle deposition at metals and other nontransparent interfaces. Experiments performed for various flow intensities indicated that the initial deposition kinetics at all interfaces was identical within the error bounds, in accordance with the model based on the convective-diffusion theory. It was concluded that the limiting flux was governed by the bulk transport rather than by the specific surface interactions.

A new macrocyclic polystyrene-based sensor for chromium (III) ions.

A new tetradentate dihydrogen perchlorate macrocyclic ligand (2,4,9,11-tetraphenyl-1,5,8,12-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,4,8,11-tetraene dihydrogen perchlorate) was prepared and characterised. The macrocycle behaves as a selective chelating ion-exchanger for some metal ions. The polystyrene-based membrane electrode is found to exhibit quite promising selectivity for Cr3+ ions. It can be used to estimate chromium concentrations in the range 3.16x 10(-6)-1.00x10(-1) M with a near-Nernstian slope of 17.5 mV per decade of concentration between pH 3.0 to 6.5. The electrode is found to possess a fast response time of 15 s and was used over a period of three months with good reproducibility (s = +/- 0.3 mV). The selectivity coefficient values for mono-, di- and trivalent cations indicate excellent selectivity for Cr3+ ions over a large number of other cations. Anions such as Cl- and SO4(2-) do not interfere and the electrode also works satisfactorily in a mixed organic-water solution. The sensor has been used as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of Cr3+ with EDTA. The practical utility of the membrane sensor has also been demonstrated in solutions contaminated with detergents (CTAB and SDS). Above all, the membrane sensor has been very successfully used to determine Cr3+ in some foods.

A molecular thermometer based on the delayed fluorescence of C70 dispersed in a polystyrene film.

A new optical molecular thermometer, based on the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of C70 dispersed in a polystyrene film, was developed. In the presence of oxygen, the fluorescence intensity of the C70 film is essentially temperature independent in a wide range. In the absence of oxygen, however, the fluorescence intensity markedly increases with temperature. At room temperature (25 degrees C), and after degassing the sample, the fluorescence intensity of C70 increases 22 times, while at 100 degrees C the fluorescence intensity is increased by 70 times. With our system, the very weak fluorescence of C70 (phi(F) congruent with 5 x 10(-4), in toluene) can be increased up to 91 times (up to an estimated maximum value phi(F) = 0.046). The estimate value of the singlet-triplet gap (29 kJ mol(-1)) and the fluorescence lifetime (0.63 ns) of the C70 in film are in agreement with the values reported in the literature for C70 in solution. The values of the phosphorescence lifetime at room temperature (23 ms) and the quantum yield of triplet formation (0.989) were also determined. The system is completely reversible with respect to heating-cooling cycles.

A rapid quantitative method for detecting infectious bursal disease virus using polystyrene latex microspheres.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) to infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) was bound to polystyrene latex microspheres. The microspheres agglutinated with extracts of bursae and sera from chickens infected with all strains or isolates of IBDV tested. Agglutination appeared within a 10-min reaction time. The assay could detect a 10(3.7) to 10(4.5) mean embryo infective dose (EID50) of the virus in 0.01 ml and the titer of the assay was 10- to 40-times higher than that of the agar gel precipitin test.

Dielectric properties of spherical macroion suspensions. I. Study on monodisperse polystyrene latex.

Dielectric properties of polystyrene latex suspended in aqueous media are investigated with special attention to the effect of volume fraction of the latex and salt concentration. The experimental data show the existence of two dispersions, one in the low-frequency range from 10(3) to 10(5) Hz. and the other in the high-frequcncy range from 10(5) to 10(7) Hz. In the salt-free system. both dispersions are of the Debye type and their relaxation limes arc insensitive to the volume fraction. Addition of H2SO4 to the suspension enlarges the magnitude of the low-frequency dispersion and reduces that of the high-frequency dispersion. whereas it does not affect the relaxation times. In the mixture of two species of counterions, e.g. H+ and Na(+), the low-frequency dispersion deviates from the Debye type. while the high-frequency dispersion docs not. From these facts, the high- and low-frequency dispersions are thought to be due to the radial and tangential components of the displacement current at the surface of the latex. The latter process is consistent with the Schwarz theory of the dielectric dispersion of colloidal suspensions.

Polystyrene monolithic column functionalized with copper-iminodiacetate complex as a stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography.

Polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer functionalized with copper-iminodiacetate complex was prepared in situ for the capillary electrochromatographic separation of amino acids and oligopeptides. The steps included silanization of the fused-silica capillary column, functionalization, polymerization, hydrolysis and complexation. For having a homogeneous polymerization system in the selected porogen, the functional monomer was obtained from the reaction of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride and diethyl iminodiacetate. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the polymeric monolith column was an open tubular column with a thickness of 0.3 microm. Various modes of hydrolysis were investigated via the electroosmatic flow measurement to find the optimization condition prior to introducing the copper ion. The influence of pH, composition and concentration of mobile phase as well as the organic modifier were investigated. Judging from our results, the recognition performance of the prepared stationary phase might be integrated from the mechanisms of ligand exchange, electrophoretic mobility, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding.

Preparation, structure, and magnetic properties of polystyrene coated by Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

A novel method of fabricating core-shell structure particles, comprising nearly monodisperse polystyrene (PS) spheres as cores and Fe3O4 as shells, is submitted. In this research, the magnetite (Fe3O4) shell was prepared by seeded growth from the reaction of FeCl2 with diethylene glycol (DEG) in aqueous solutions. The thickness of the shell were controlled in the range of 0-60 nm by using slow injection. The composition and the structure of the shell were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM). It is found that there are some differences between the magnetic composite spheres shelled with Fe3O4 and pure Fe3O4 particles, such as the size of the magnetites and the ferromagnetic property. Furthermore, the spheres exhibited the superparamagnetic characterization when the thickness of the Fe3O4 shell was less than 15 nm.

Anomalous adsorption behavior observed during the characterization of a polystyrene film prepared on a mesoporous material.

Discrepancies in the results obtained during the adsorption of nitrogen, argon, and water on two mesoporous samples are compared and contrasted. A silica-based mesoporous oxide and the same sample coated with a film of polystyrene were chosen with respect to their different surface chemistries. The nitrogen BET surface is overestimated on the pure silica sample and underestimated for the polymer-coated sample. These differences can be related to the specific interaction (strong or weak) of nitrogen with these surfaces. Water has difficulty in wetting either surface. Moreover, in the case of the polymer-coated material, water is unable to fill the mesopores via capillary condensation.

Streaming current, permeability, and microelectrophoresis of polystyrene latices in methanol-ethanol mixtures.

The influence of the solvent (methanol-ethanol mixtures) on the electrokinetic behavior of polystyrene latices with sulfate groups was studied (methanol content was increased by 0.2 at a constant KBr concentration of 1 mM). Viscosity, density, and dielectric constant (eta, rho, and epsilon) were determined at experimental conditions. Two latices (with different surface charge densities and sizes) were used. Electrophoresis measurements were used for dilute dispersions. Streaming current and hydrodynamic permeability were measured for porous plugs. Linear trends in the electrokinetic measurements were observed in the whole molar fraction range. The experimental data obtained from different techniques allow determining the zeta potential according to a well-established classical relationship. The results obtained were analyzed on the basis of the solvent mixture properties and the electrical interface behavior. In addition, permeability data provided valuable information to interpret effects at the solid-liquid interface of the porous plug.

The hydrophilization of polystyrene substrates by 172-nm vacuum ultraviolet light.

This paper describes the photochemical surface modification of polystyrene (PS) substrates using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light 172 nm in wavelength. We have particularly focused on the effects of atmospheric pressure during VUV irradiation on the obtained surface's wettability and the stability of the wettability, in addition to its chemical structure, morphology, and photooxidation rate. Samples were photoirradiated with VUV light under pressures of 10, 10(3), or 10(5) Pa. Although, in each case, the originally hydrophobic PS surface became highly hydrophilic, the final water-contact angle and photooxidation rate depended on the atmospheric pressure. The samples treated at 10 Pa were less wettable than those prepared at 10(3) and 10(5) Pa due to the shortage of oxygen molecules in the atmosphere. The minimum water-contact angles of the samples treated at 10, 10(3), and 10(5) Pa were about 8 degrees, 0 degrees, and 0 degrees, respectively. With the samples prepared at 10 and 10(3) Pa, photooxidation reactions proceeded in the topmost region closest to the surface, while at 10(5) Pa photooxidation was found to be greatly enhanced in the deeper regions, as evidenced by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoetching rates were determined through atomic force microscope observation of microstructured PS samples prepared by a simple mesh-contact method. As estimated from AFM images of the latticed microstructures obtained, the rates of samples prepared at 10(3) and 10(5) Pa were about 1.5 and 1.3 nm/min, respectively. However, no photoetched features were observable on the sample surface prepared at 10 Pa. Hydrophilic stability also varied greatly depending on atmospheric pressure. The hydrophilicity of samples treated at 10 and 10(3) Pa gradually decreased as they were exposed to air. On the other hand, the sample surface prepared at 10(5) Pa showed excellent hydrophilicity even after being left in air for 30 days.

Determination of stagnant layer conductivity in polystyrene suspensions: temperature effects.

In the classical theory of electrokinetic phenomena, it is admitted that the whole electrokinetic behavior of any colloidal system is fully determined by the zeta potential, zeta, of the interface. However, both experimental data and theoretical models have shown that this is an incomplete picture, as ions in the stagnant layer (the region between the solid surface and the slip plane--the plane where the equilibrium potential equals zeta) may respond to the field. In this paper, we aim at the evaluation of this contribution by the estimation of both K(SL)(sigma) (the surface conductivity of the stagnant layer) and K(d)(sigma) (the conductivity associated with the diffuse layer). This will be done by measuring the high-frequency dielectric dispersion (HFDD) in polystyrene suspensions; here "high-frequency" means the frequency interval where Maxwell-Wagner-O'Konski relaxation takes place (typically at MHz frequencies). Prior to any conclusions, a treatment of electrode polarization effects in the measurements was needed: we used two methods, and both led to similar results. Simulating the existence of surface conductivity by bulk conductivity, we reached the conclusion that no consistent explanation can be given for our HFDD and additional electrophoresis data based on the existence of diffuse-layer conductivity alone. We thus show how K(SL)(sigma) can be estimated and demonstrate that it can be explained by an ionic mobility very close to that characteristic of ions in the bulk solution. Such mobility, and hence also the values of K(SL)(sigma), increases with temperature as expected on simple physical grounds.

Applicability of the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher type asymptotic exponential functions for ice, hydrates, and polystyrene latex.

The validity of the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher type asymptotic exponential functions for representing the temperature dependence of various properties, such as the particle-particle pull-off adherence forces in ice and hydrates and the annealing effect on polystyrene latex films, is demonstrated. The parameters of this equation are determined using the reported experimental data. The applications show that such functions yield accurate correlations of the experimental property data measured at various temperatures.

The influence of flotation agent concentration on the wettability and flotability of polystyrene.

The fundamental flotation process is the formation of a flocculant by air bubbles and solid particles in an aqueous solution. The behavior of plastic particles is significantly influenced by the wettability of the plastics. In this article the reciprocal relationship between the flotability and wettability of polystyrene was studied at different concentrations of flotation agents, particularly terpineol, polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether, tannic acid, and calcium lignosulfonate. The conclusions obtained demonstrate the dissimilar action of flotation depressants, what means different adhesion mechanisms on a plastic surface.

Destabilization of polystyrene latex particles induced by adsorption of polyvinylamine: mass, size and structure characteristics of the growing aggregates.

The obviously visible aggregation of suspended colloidal particles resulting from the addition of polyvinylamine to the aqueous dispersion of polystyrene latex particles bearing surface sulfate groups set in with a delay of 24 h. The aggregation mechanisms and the fractal dimension of the aggregates were derived from the variations with time of the weight and number averaged masses of the aggregates as well as of the weight averaged harmonic mean diameter of the size distribution. Since the establishment of starved layers was determined to be relatively fast and to leave the liquid phase free of polymer, the delay for the obvious destabilization was attributed to the reconformation of adsorbed macromolecules that was expected to be extremely slow. This reconformation promoted the emergence of the diffusion-limited aggregation process that accompanies the permanent reaction-limited aggregation process. The fractal dimension of the latex particles/polyvinylamine aggregates was determined to be 2.12.

Wall effects on electrophoretic motion of spherical polystyrene particles in a rectangular poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchannel.

The wall effects on electrophoretic motion of spherical polystyrene particles in a rectangular poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchannel were studied experimentally. It is found that the particle electrophoretic velocity is insensitive to the trajectory between the channel sidewalls, consistent with the theoretical prediction. We also demonstrate that the electrophoretic motion of larger particles along the channel centerline is more viscously retarded by the sidewalls of a narrower channel. This observation is well predicted by incorporating the analytical models for the particle electrophoresis along the centerline of a slit channel and along the axis of a cylindrical pore.

Effect of the ionic surfactant concentration on the stabilization/destabilization of polystyrene colloidal particles.

One of the most interesting properties of the surfactants is that they are able to alter the stability of colloidal dispersions. Despite its great industrial relevance, only a few works analyze the colloidal stability of these systems at high surfactant concentrations (well above the critical micelle concentration (CMC)). In the present work, the colloidal stability of polystyrene particles is studied under a wide range of ionic surfactant concentrations. The effects of the surface charge of the latex particles (evaluating both sign and value), and surfactant type (cationic or anionic) have been examined. Colloidal stability data have been gathered by monitoring aggregation using a nephelometric technique. As will be shown, it is possible to reach different stability regimes using the same colloidal system just by changing the surfactant concentration. Independently of the sign of both the surfactant and the surface, the destabilization of the system consistently takes place above certain surfactant concentration due to a depletion effect from non-adsorbed micelles. This destabilization can be predicted by adding to the DLVO interaction energy a new contribution addressing the force between two spherical particles in the presence of non-adsorbing spherical macromolecules.

Synthesis of highly monodisperse polystyrene microspheres via dispersion polymerization using an amphoteric initiator.

The highly monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres were produced by dispersion polymerization using an amphoteric initiator, 2,2'-azobis [N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methylpropionamidine] (VA-057). The polymerization characteristics were investigated and compared with conventional initiators, 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO). The monodisperse PS microspheres having the coefficient of variation (C(v)) of diameter all less than 4% are obtained at very low stabilizer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) concentrations of 1 and 2 wt%. It is found that the size dependence of the VA-057 system, D(n) proportional, variant [VA-057](0.267), is less sensitive than a conventional initiator system. When the same amount, 2 wt%, of AIBN, BPO, and VA-057 is used under the identical PVP concentration of 2 wt%, the D(n)/C(v)'s are 1.95/11.57, 1.47/22.44, and 2.08 microm/2.50%, respectively. The uniformity of particles was characterized employing an optical analyzer, Turbiscan. For the VA-057 system, the back scattering intensity is linearly reduced with time having a constant sedimentation rate of 48.98 microm/min throughout the settling process. The uniformity of PS particles in the VA-057 system stems from (1) the higher rate of polymerization in early stage of polymerization, followed by significantly faster reduction of the rate, and (2) good dispersion stability of primary particles. Therefore, it is found that the use of an amphoteric initiator, VA-057, is promising for producing monodisperse particles in dispersion polymerization.

Initial growth process of polystyrene particle investigated by AFM.

We carried out molecular-scale and in situ investigations of the initial growth process of polystyrene particles in soap-free polymerization, where a cationic initiator, V-50, was used to make the formed particles transfer onto the mica plate in sampling, using an atomic force microscope. It was found that the particles coagulated soon after the nucleation process. Such coagulation was estimated from a macroscopic research, however; microscopic evidence was not enough. This study verifies it from a microscopic view.
