CONTEXT: The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has defined several core examinations that student radiographers must perform to demonstrate competency. Furthermore, the ARRT has left the method of tracking competency exams to educators. OBJECTIVE: This article describes a Web-based system that can be used to track clinical competencies. METHOD: The pedagogy employed in designing a meaningful and successful Web site to track competencies can be overwhelming. Considerations include selecting software, the design and implementation process, and providing security to protect confidential information. CONCLUSION: The Web-based system described in this article is innovative, sensible and relatively easy to adopt. This tracking method provides faculty members with instantaneous access and a quick review of the student's competency examinations. Students' competency information for the entire program is contained in 1 electronic file. With minor modification, the system can be used in a variety of educational and administrative settings.
A strategy for rational design of targeted combinatorial libraries is described. The aim of this approach is to select a subset of available building blocks for the library synthesis that are most likely to be present in the active compounds. Building blocks that are used in the underlying combinatorial chemical reaction are randomly assembled to produce virtual combinatorial library compounds, which are represented by various chemical descriptors. Stochastic algorithms (simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, neural net methods) are used to search the potentially large structural space of virtual chemical libraries in order to identify compounds similar to lead compound(-s). The selection of a virtual molecule as a candidate for the targeted library is based either on its chemical similarity to a biologically active probe or on its biological activity predicted from a pre-constructed QSAR equation. Frequency analysis of building block composition of the selected virtual compounds identifies building blocks that can be used in combinatorial synthesis of chemical libraries with high similarity to the lead compound(-s). This method is applied to rational design of the library with bradykinin potentiating activity. Twenty eight bradykinin potentiating pentapeptides were used as a training set for the development of a QSAR equation, and, alternatively, two active pentapeptides, VEWAK and VKWAP, were used as probe molecules. In each case, the frequency distribution of amino acids in the top 100 peptides suggested by the method resembles the frequency distribution of amino acids found in the active peptides. The results obtained after GA optimization also compared favorably with those obtained by the exhaustive analysis of all possible 3.2 millions pentapeptides.
A mass balanced based model representing the dynamical behaviour of anaerobic digester has served as a basis for the design of software sensors for the concentration of inorganic carbon, alkalinity and volatile fatty acids. The predictions of the sensors are close to the actual off-line measurements. The model has also been used to design a model-based adaptive linearizing controller and a fuzzy controller whose objective is to regulate the ratio of the intermediate alkalinity over the total alkalinity below some desired value (0.3) under which the process is assumed to remain in stable conditions and avoid VFA accumulation. Both controllers were calibrated via extensive numerical simulations and implemented. The controllers proved successful in maintaining the ratio of TA over PA below 0.3, even in presence of large variations of the organic load.

Computer-assisted neurosurgery uses the latest technological advancements in imaging, computers, mechanics, and electronics to improve the accuracy and reduce the invasiveness and risk of neurosurgical procedures. We describe the Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, computer-assisted neurosurgical system with the emphasis on software and discuss the theory guiding the development of this system and its application in real-time position tracking systems. Our system consists of the Neurological Surgery Planning System (NSPS) software which we developed at our medical center and three types of position tracking systems: the Zamorano-Dujovny (Z-D) are digitizer for frame-based procedures, an articulated arm, and an infrared-based digitizer for frameless procedures. The NSPS software is designed to offer neurosurgeons a safe and accurate method to approach intracranial lesions by preoperatively planning a surgical trajectory. Software consisting of the most advanced technologies in computer vision, computer imaging/graphics, and stereotactic numeric analysis forms the core of the system. Capabilities for correlating data from imaging studies to facilitate image reconstruction, image mapping, and three-dimensional (3D) visualization of target volumes enable the neurosurgeon to simulate surgical procedures into a preoperative protocol to be used during surgery, both to follow the preplanned trajectory and to track the position of surgical instruments in real-time on the computer monitor. The tracking systems position and orient the surgical instruments relative to the patient's head. With these devices, the display of the surgical instruments together with the virtual images create an excellent intraoperative tool.
This paper describes ARTMEM, an interactive graphical simulation program, and its use for teaching students the concept of membrane potentials and the measurement of electrical potentials across an ion-selective membrane. The program, written in Borland C++, and specifically designed for IBM-PC-compatible equipment, can also run on fast Macintosh computers using SoftPC emulation software. It demonstrates how an ion-selective membrane separating two different salt solutions automatically generates a potential across the membrane, as well as how such electrical potentials can be measured simply and the underlying permeability ratio determined. The program was developed to replace a previous experiment with actual artificial resin membranes; virtually every feature of the experiment has been simulated (e.g., unstirred-layer effects, solution-mixing mixing contamination, liquid junction potential effects). In addition, a number of these features and the procedure for data fitting are more clearly demonstrated using the computer simulation. The efficacy of such a simulation is discussed in comparison with the real experiment and other types of simulations.
We have developed a data management system, 'HOSEpipe' (High Output STS Evaluation pipeline) to aid sample tracking and data analysis in STS content mapping projects. The system is based around a World Wide Web (WWW) server that provides a number of pages including forms for sample processing and data entry accessible via a standard WWW browser application. The system is split into two main modules: firstly, a sequence evaluation and annotation module that takes de novo sequence for a potential STS, screens it against existing STSs and DNA sequence databases, followed by appropriate primer sequence design; secondly, a module that handles YAC library STS screening and includes facilities for both sample tracking and experimental data analysis. We present the design and rationale of the HOSEpipe system and its development to support a whole chromosomal physical mapping project. This software and design approach is potentially applicable to physical mapping projects of varying sizes and resolution and to similar projects, such as sample sequencing and the construction of sequence-ready maps.
MENTHOR is a database system for the storage and retrieval of three-dimensional coordinate and charge information on molecules as well as of traditional biological and physical properties. Our molecular graphics system retrieves from MENTHOR structural information in individual molecules and receptor map/macromolecular binding site hypotheses. Substructural searches of MENTHOR are used to find starting coordinates for molecular modeling and traditional database searches of MENTHOR identify compounds for which modeling is needed. It also forms the data to be searched with ALLADDIN, our substructure/geometric search program. MENTHOR expedites molecular modeling by organizing previous work and facilitating transmission of information between individuals. Examples from modeling of D-2 receptor agonists are shown.
PURPOSE: To identify practical issues surrounding delivering digital images from picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) for research and teaching purposes. The complexity of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) access methods, security, patient confidentiality, PACS database integrity, portability, and scalability are discussed. A software prototype designed to resolve these issues is described. SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE: A six-component, three-tier, client server software application program supporting DICOM query/retrieve services was developed in the JAWA language. This software was interfaced to a large GE (Mt Prospect, IL) Medical Systems clinical PACS at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH). CONCLUSION: Images can be delivered from a clinical PACS for research and teaching purposes. Concerns for security, patient confidentiality, integrity of the PACS database, and management of the transactions can be addressed. The described software is one such solution for achieving this goal.
Biosensors based on immobilized microbial cells were developed for drug screening in our laboratory. Compared with the conventional methods such as diffusion and dilution tests, biosensors have been demonstrated to be superior in sensitivity and require much shorter screening time. An integrated microcomputer system has been developed for data acquisition, database management, and mode of action estimation, which automates the screening processes and reduces the labor requirements significantly.
