Physiological adaptations to a weight-loss dietary regimen and exercise programs in women.

Thirty-one women (mean age 35.4 +/- 8.5 yr) who were overweight were matched and randomly placed into either a control group (Con; n = 6), a diet-only group (D; n = 8), a diet+aerobic endurance exercise training group (DE; n = 9), or a diet+aerobic endurance exercise training+strength training group (DES; n = 8). After 12 wk, the three dietary groups demonstrated a significant (P </= 0.05) reduction in body mass, %body fat, and fat mass. No differences were observed in the magnitude of loss among groups, in fat-free mass, or in resting metabolic rate. The DE and DES groups increased maximal oxygen consumption, and the DES group demonstrated increases in maximal strength. Weight loss resulted in a similar reduction in total serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol among dietary groups. These data indicate that weight loss during moderate caloric restriction is not altered by inclusion of aerobic or aerobic+resistance exercise, but diet in conjunction with training can induce remarkable adaptations in aerobic capacity and muscular strength despite significant reductions in body mass.

Effect of fetal adrenalectomy on catecholamine release and physiologic adaptation at birth in sheep.

Plasma catecholamine levels increase dramatically at birth. To determine the contribution of adrenal catecholamine secretion to the surge in catecholamines at birth and the role in newborn adaptation, we performed surgical adrenalectomy or sham operation on near-term ovine fetuses. After recovery in utero, the animals were delivered and supported by mechanical ventilation. Plasma catecholamine levels, heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output, pulmonary function, surfactant secretion, and release of free fatty acids (FFA) and glucose were compared in control and adrenalectomized animals. Plasma epinephrine increased rapidly at birth in controls but was undetectable in adrenalectomized animals. Norepinephrine levels were not statistically different. Heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output and contractility increased abruptly after cord cutting in controls but did not increase in adrenalectomized animals. Lung compliance, pulmonary function, surfactant pool size, glucose and FFA levels were significantly decreased in adrenalectomized animals. These results suggest that adrenal epinephrine secretion is vital to many of the adaptive events at birth.

Physiologically adaptive changes of the L5 afferent neurogram and of the rat soleus EMG activity during 14 days of hindlimb unloading and recovery.

The hindlimb unloading rat model (HU, Morey's model) is usually used to mimic and study neuromuscular changes that develop during spaceflights. This Earth-based model of microgravity induces a muscular atrophy of the slow postural muscle of hindlimbs, such as the soleus, a loss of strength, modifications of contraction kinetics, changes in histochemical and electrophoretical profiles and modifications of the tonic EMG activity. It has been suggested in the literature that some of these neuromuscular effects were due to a reduction of afferent feedback during HU. However, no direct data have confirmed this hypothesis. The aim of this study was to clearly establish if changes of the L5 afferent neurogram are closely related to the soleus EMG activity during and after 14 days of HU. Immediately after HU, the EMG activity of the soleus muscle disappeared and was associated with a decrease in the afferent neurogram. The soleus electromyographic and afferent activities remained lower than the pre-suspension levels until the sixth day of HU and were recovered between the sixth and the ninth day. On the twelfth and fourteenth days, they were increased beyond the pre-suspension levels. During the first recovery day, these activities were significantly higher than those on the fourteenth HU day and returned to the pre-suspension levels between the third and sixth recovery days. To conclude, our study directly demonstrates that the HU conditions cannot be considered as a functional deafferentation, as suggested in the literature, but only as a reduction of afferent information at the beginning of the HU period.

Physiological adaptations in adipose tissue of Brahman vs Angus heifers.

Nonpregnant yearling Brahman (n = 12) and Angus (n = 12) heifers were equally allocated to two dietary treatments in a replicated study to examine responses in lipid metabolism to nutritional treatments consisting of a moderate energy diet (2.0 Mcal ME/kg) fed at maintenance and a 2.5 x maintenance high-energy diet (2.4 Mcal ME/kg) fed for 30 d. In vitro lipogenesis and the activities of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) were determined in perianal subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies at the start and end of the trial. At the start of the trial, breeds had similar (P > .10) rates of lipogenesis and LPL activity. Brahman had greater (P < .05) HSL activity than Angus at the start of the trial and tended (P < .07) to have greater HSL activity at the end. Diet did not influence (P > .10) HSL activity. Heifers on the high-energy, higher-intake diet had greater lipogenesis (P < .001) and LPL activity (P < .01) than those on the moderate-energy diet. Inclusion of body condition score (BCS) nested within breed as a covariate explained breed differences for lipogenesis (P < .05). Thus, by including the covariate, the two breeds had similar (P > .10) rates of lipogenesis at the end of the trial. When adjusted for BCS nested within breed, Brahman had greater (P < .05) LPL activity than Angus.

[Physiological adaptation reactions in patients with ischemic heart disease].

The condition was studied of bodily general adaptive reactions in patients with different forms of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Unlike healthy subjects, IHD patients displayed predominance of pathogenetic and dysadaptive type reactions. 88 percent of healthy subjects had reactions of sanogenetic character, with 31.1 percent of cases having been found in IHD patients. The spectrum of bodily general adaptive reactions was also distinctive in patients with different forms of IHD.

[Role of physiological adaptation in the development of renal inflammatory disease].

The diagnosis and treatment of chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN) have come to be based on apparent manifestations of the disease. It is most important that the disease be identified early in its course depending on the stage of bodily adaptational processes in CGN patients. A study into adaptational reactions of the organism was made together with ways for correction thereof using medicamentous and nonmedicamentous modes of treatment. As a result of the examination conducted and treatments administered there have been secured certain regularities showing a clear relation to the type of bodily unspecific adaptational reaction and clinical manifestations of the affliction.

[Physiological adaptability of seeding rice genotypes with different P uptake efficiency under low P-deficient stress].

The genotypic differences in P uptake efficiency of three rice varieties (IR74, IR71331 and IR71379) were studied under the P-deficiency condition with hydroponics, and their adaptability to low phosphorus stress about physio-biochemical mechanisms was further studied. The results showed that rice genotypes tolerated low P stress resulted from the co-ordination of P uptake efficiency, internal utilization efficiency and its translocation efficiency. The higher P-efficiency type IR74 and the middle type IR71331 had a higher P uptake efficiency. The rice genotype with higher P-efficiency was characterized by higher activity and desirable kinetic parameters of H2 PO4- uptake, showing lower Km and Cmin, but higher Imax values and relative APase activity, small amount of Km and Cmin. Moreover, under low P stress, the activity of RNase was about ten to fifteen times as high as that of the control (CK), but it had little genotypic differences.
