[Use of dibunol in treating radiation injuries to the skin and mucosa].

The authors present the results of the use of dibunol in the form of liniment (1-10%) for the treatment of radiation cystitis and rectitis resulting from radiation therapy of small pelvic tumors, epidermitis and epithelitis that develop in the course of treatment of skin and lower lip tumors. A high efficacy of the drug in the therapy of radiation injury has been shown in 212 patients.

Seasonality of reported poison exposures.

Review of 3,381 records from New Hampshire Poison Center for July through September 1981 and January through March 1982 revealed no seasonal difference in the total number of calls. A significant predominance in the summer reports was noted for plants, pesticides, envenomations, and acetaminophen exposures. During the winter a predominance was noted for aspirin, vitamins, cold and cough remedies, liniments, foods, and calls with no specific agent identified.

[Relation between the status of cellular immunity and pharmacologic immunocorrection of the wound process by phytohemagglutinin in rabbits].

Altogether 183 C57BL/6 mice were used to determine the optimum dose of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) to be equal to 3 microgram/g liniment tela, which reduced the time of wound healing by 33%. Experiments on 255 heterobred rabbits of both sexes revealed that the natural animal population could be distributed into three groups according to delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) to PHA: highly sensitive, moderately sensitive and poorly sensitive, in a ratio of 1:1, 5:1. Microscopic, cytological and histological analyses have demonstrated that PHA exerts a selective therapeutic effect on wound healing. The reduction of the time required for wound healing by 38% and positive changes in cellular dynamics of inflammation have been observed only in the animals with a weak DTH to PHA. The PHA intracutaneous test is recommended for selection of patients being in want of pharmacological correction of wound healing.

[Clinical and biochemical aspects in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis with antioxidants].

A trial has been made of traditional versus antioxidant treatment of acute maxillary sinusitides. The patients were injected a mixture consisting of 4 ml emulsion of 10% dibunol liniment and 2 ml of 5% ascorbic acid made by dilution of 10 g dibunol in 30 ml sterile 0.5% novocaine solution. The mixture was introduced into the sinuses 2 times a day, in one of the study groups it was combined with 500,000 U of ampicillin in cases of purulent sinusitis. In catarrhal form the mixture was injected once a day without the antibiotic. Control groups received 4 ml dioxidine in a single dose after the sinus lavage in catarrhal sinusitis and 500,000 U ampicillin plus hydrocortisone emulsion (1 ml in 4 ml solution) 2 times a day in case of purulent sinusitis. All the patients received aevit (one capsule daily). The mean number of manipulations for the study groups were 4.4 +/- 0.4 in catarrhal sinuses and 6.3 +/- 0.5 in purulent sinusitis; in control groups, respectively, 5.9 +/- 0.5 and 10.7 +/- 0.7. Mean duration of treatment reached 5.3 +/- 0.4, 6.2 +/- 0.3 and 7.1 +/- 0.1 in the study groups and 8.5 +/- 0.2, 10.2 +/- 0.4 days in the control groups. Positive response to the treatment with antioxidants was confirmed by positive changes in blood levels of LPO products, activity of lysosomal hydrolases and antioxidant defense enzymes. The results obtained justify the inclusion of antioxidants in the schemes of acute sinusitis treatment.

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP)--a case report.

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) is a rare dermatosis of unknown etiology that is most frequently seen in primiparas and twin/multiple pregnancies. The prognosis is favorable. We report a case of PUPPP in a primipara and review the clinical signs, differential diagnosis, possible etiologic factors, diagnosis, and therapy.

Pyogenic granuloma of the cornea induced by "snake oil".

A pyogenic granuloma of the cornea developed on the vascularized cornea of a 79-year-old woman after "snake oil" accidentally dripped in her eye. The snake oil was being used to relieve forehead pain, which may have been referred. The five previously reported examples of corneal pyogenic granuloma are similar to this case in that trauma preceded development of the lesion. However, the chemical trauma induced by the snake oil appears to be a unique mechanism of injury.
