A decrease in thymus gland mass and an increase in spleen tissue mass, decrease of DNA content in thymus, cervical and submaxillary lymph nodes, increase in DNA and RNA content in axillary lymph nodes and of RNA in spleen were detected within 15-19 days in rats (220-240 g of body mass), sensitized with 0.4 ml of encephalogenous mixture (0.1 ml in each foot) containing 100 mg of homologous brain tissue, liquid petrolatum and 10 mg of heated BCG vaccine. Activity of transketolase was decreased in thymus, submaxillary lymph nodes and increased in spleen tissue of the sensitized animals.
A brief review of the experimental data on the energy-yielding effects of pentose-phosphate cycle metabolites is presented. The cardiotropic effects of NADP, fructose-1,6-diphosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, D-ribose and ribose-5-phosphate were analysed with relation to their influence on viability of the ischemic myocardium.

Activation of both glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and transketolase was found in skeletal muscles of patients with occlusion impairments of main arteries as well as of animals with acute arterial ischemia.
Activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, the enzymes participating in the pentose phosphate pathway of glucose oxidation was studied in the blood of 15 normal fetuses and 25 abortuses as well as in 80 females (20 with normally advancing pregnancy, 40 with the signs of discontinuation and 20 patients with spontaneous abortion developed during 24-26 weeks of gestation). The impact of abnormal pentose phosphate pathway of glucose oxidation on the pathogenesis of fetal development arrest in females with incompetent pregnancy was established.
Treatment with roxicam, rengasil and flugalin tended significantly to normalize the activity of enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism pentosophosphate pathway in the blood of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The dynamics of the change in the activity of enzymes of pentose phosphate pathway in the blood of patients with systemic connective tissue diseases against the background of treatment with roxicam, rengasil and flugalin is the enzymological criterion in assessing efficacy of pharmacological correction of the inflammatory process in the diseases.
A procedure is developed for estimation of glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases activity in human erythrocytes. The procedure involved polarographic registration of oxygen consumption, which is directly related to content of NADPH formed, in a coupled enzymatic system containing peroxidase and Mn2+.

In healing of rat femur fracture activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and total content of nucleic acids were increased in callus, reaching the maximal value within 1 week after the fracture and decreased down to the level observed in intact controls within 10-15 weeks. The enzymatic activity correlated closely with the content of nucleic acids. The data obtained suggest that the tissue reparation depends considerably on the activity of pentose phosphate shunt at the initial periods of healing, which has to be taken into consideration in studies on stimulation of consolidation process.
The effects of prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha on oxidative and non-oxidative reactions of the pentose phosphate pathway of carbohydrate metabolism in isolated perfused liver and uterus of the rat were studied. The prostaglandins (0.5 X 10(-8) M) activate dehydrogenase but do not practically affect the activity of non-oxidative enzymes of the pentose phosphate pathway. Upon perfusion of isolated rat liver and uterus by the prostaglandins, the degree of dehydrogenase activation depends on the perfusion time and the nature of the prostaglandins. Under effects of prostaglandin E2, the maximal activity of liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (280% above the normal level) was observed already after 15 min, that of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (104% above the normal level) after 30 min. In the uterus, the maximal activity of these enzymes was induced by prostaglandin F2 alpha, showing an increase in the whole course of perfusion and after 1 hour exceeded the normal value by 120 and 80% for glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases, respectively.
Thrombin inhibits the rate of glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate oxidation. ADP decreases the incorporation of ribose-5-phosphate into metabolism. The effect of adrenaline on the pentose phosphate pathway reactions was not demonstrated. Cell destruction by means of freezing, thawing and treatment with Triton X-100 decreases the rate of the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase reaction to a greater degree as compared with osmotic shock.
Studies have been made on the activity of the enzymes of pentose phosphate shunt in the heart, liver and somatic muscles of two lamprey species, Lampetra fluviatilis and L. planeri, at various stages of ontogenesis. It was shown that the activity of these enzymes in larval tissues is significantly higher than in adult lampreys. In adult animals, the enzymes investigated exhibit low tissue specificity.

570 males of golden hamsters were divided into 3 groups: I--free from invasion, II--once infected, III--repeatedly infected. Diurnal activity of cyclic nucleotides and enzyme of pentose-phosphate cycle (G-6-PhDG) was investigated in spring, autumn, and winter at 3, 7, 11 a.m. and 3, 7, 11 p.m. The golden hamsters once infected with opisthorchiasis do not show any seasonal changes in G-6-PhDG activity, but this invasion influences the total content of protein, diurnal oscillation of which depends upon seasons. In spring time the repeated invasion induces the diurnal rhythms of G-6-PhDG and of total protein content. Diurnal stereotype of cyclic nucleotides (cGMP, cAMP) demonstrates the dependence upon seasons and invasion frequency without any changes of the average diurnal level.
