Relating net nitrogen input in the Mississippi River basin to nitrate flux in the lower Mississippi River: a comparison of approaches.

A quantitative understanding of the relationship between terrestrial N inputs and riverine N flux can help guide conservation, policy, and adaptive management efforts aimed at preserving or restoring water quality. The objective of this study was to compare recently published approaches for relating terrestrial N inputs to the Mississippi River basin (MRB) with measured nitrate flux in the lower Mississippi River. Nitrogen inputs to and outputs from the MRB (1951 to 1996) were estimated from state-level annual agricultural production statistics and NOy (inorganic oxides of N) deposition estimates for 20 states that comprise 90% of the MRB. A model with water yield and gross N inputs accounted for 85% of the variation in observed annual nitrate flux in the lower Mississippi River, from 1960 to 1998, but tended to underestimate high nitrate flux and overestimate low nitrate flux. A model that used water yield and net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs (NANI) accounted for 95% of the variation in riverine N flux. The NANI approach accounted for N harvested in crops and assumed that crop harvest in excess of the nutritional needs of the humans and livestock in the basin would be exported from the basin. The U.S. White House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment (CENR) developed a more comprehensive N budget that included estimates of ammonia volatilization, denitrification, and exchanges with soil organic matter. The residual N in the CENR budget was weakly and negatively correlated with observed riverine nitrate flux. The CENR estimates of soil N mineralization and immobilization suggested that there were large (2000 kg N ha-1) net losses of soil organic N between 1951 and 1996. When the CENR N budget was modified by assuming that soil organic N levels have been relatively constant after 1950, and ammonia volatilization losses are redeposited within the basin, the trend of residual N closely matched temporal variation in NANI and was positively correlated with riverine nitrate flux in the lower Mississippi River. Based on results from applying these three modeling approaches, we conclude that although the NANI approach does not address several processes that influence the N cycle, it appears to focus on the terms that can be estimated with reasonable certainty and that are correlated with riverine N flux.

[Characteristics and distribution pattern of farmland patch in river valley in middle and low Taihang mountain area--a case study in Yanzhi River in Fuping County, Hebei Province].

Based on the investigations in the main valley of Yanzhi river in Fuping county of Hebei Province, the characteristics and distribution patterns were analyzed. The results indicated that farmland patches were distributed in the whole valley, except the headstream reach. With the increase of human disturbances, the proportion of farmlands increased along the river from upstream to downstream, while in natural landscapes, the environmental heterogeneity and fragmentation of farmlands decreased. The area of Yanzhi river valley totaled 2297.09 hm2, mainly composed by farmland. There were 117 farmland patches mainly distributed along the riverbank in the valley, totalling 1027.78 hm2 and occupying 44.74% of the valley, which were very well irrigated, but always endangered by flood. The farmland patches were not symmetrically distributed along river, with 57.17% of farmland located on the left side of bank. The width of farmland patch presented an increasing trend, with a remarkable variation. The farmland patches were mainly strip-shape.

Detection of the most optimal measuring points for water quality variables: application to the river water quality model of the River Dender in ESWAT.

This paper presents a methodology for the definition of an optimal set of sampling data for the calibration of a river water quality model. Starting with an extensive set of measurements, it is the aim to reduce those data to obtain just as much data as necessary for a calibration with an acceptable uncertainty in the parameters. The method requires a model for the river under examination and the availability of samples for a first calibration of the model. With the model, synthetic time series are generated, which can be used as virtual observations. In the next step, the method of D-optimal design is applied. The amount, frequency, period, place and kind of variables measured of the water samples that gives the most reliable estimates of the parameters of the model are considered to be the best observations that can be made for that river. Also, the percentage of improvement of the reliability can be defined, as a function of the observations. The method is applied to the river Dender.

Identification of hazardous organic chemicals in fish from the Ashtabula River, Ohio, and Wabash River, Indiana.

Composite fish samples from the Wabash River, IN, and the Ashtabula River, OH, were analyzed by conventional pesticide procedures for PCBs, DDTs, chlordane components, and hexachlorobenzene. Additional aliquots of each sample were processed by gel permeation chromatography and were analyzed with gas chromatography--mass spectrometry by using both electron impact and negative chemical ionization modes. These analyses resulted in the identification of a series of chlorinated alkanes, chlorinated alkenes, chlorinated alkylamines containing 2--5 carbons, and polychlorinated styrenes in the Ashtabula River sample, and a series of chlorinated norbornenes, pentachlorobenzyl alcohol, and pentachlorophenol in the Wabash River sample.

Statistical method to evaluate the occurrence of PCB transformations in river sediments with application to Hudson River data.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were produced in the mid 1900s for industrial use. The term PCBs refers to 209 theoretically possible chlorinated compounds of the biphenyl molecule (congeners). The number and location of the chlorines govern both the environmental fate and toxicity of each congener. Changes in the distribution of congeners in river sediments can result from congener transformation and/or preferential congener transport. This study exploits the distribution of PCB congeners, specifically congeners that maintain a constant ratio relationship in the commercially manufactured PCB mixtures (Aroclors), to quantify the likelihood of congener distribution shifts in river sediment. By using relative abundances, the influence of total PCB bias is eliminated. Correlated congeners (tracker pairs) maintain a constant relative proportion in sequentially more-highly chlorinated Aroclors, thus there is no need to know the source contaminating Aroclors a priori. Using the Frame et al. database of Aroclor congener distributions, 276 pairs of correlated congeners, constructed from 95 individual congeners, are identified. A comparison study of Aroclors and Hudson River sediments included 218 of the 276 tracker pairs. Conclusive evidence of a shift in the congener proportions is found in 120 of the 218 cases, a much greater number than expected if no change in congener distribution had occurred.

Isolation by distance within a river system: genetic population structuring of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in tributaries of the Varzuga River in northwest Russia.

An important issue for designing any conservation programme aimed at preserving genetic diversity is estimation of the scale at which genetic structuring occurs. Additional relevant factors include distinguishing whether or not population structuring is expected to be stable as predicted by the member-vagrant hypothesis, or alternatively, whether populations are more prone to local extinction-recolonization processes, as predicted by the metapopulation evolutionary model. In this study, the population genetic structure of Atlantic salmon from 11 locations within or nearby the Varzuga River tributary system was assessed using 17 microsatellites. Mantel tests and spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed a significant isolation-by-distance signal within the tributary system as well as a negative association between the level of genetic diversity and waterway distance from the river mouth, indicating that dispersal is less likely to occur to populations deep in the tributary system. Individual-level spatial autocorrelation analyses indicated that the majority of migration occurred between populations situated within 20 km of each other. The relatively high level of genetic structuring and significant isolation-by-distance signal observed in the Varzuga tributaries are concordant with the predictions of the member-vagrant evolutionary model. However, one subpopulation in particular revealed signs of instability which may be due to its location in the tidal zone, or due to the fact that it is more affected by human impacts. The results suggest that preservation of a number of spawning sites spaced throughout the tributary system is recommendable for ensuring sustainable fishing tourism in the river.

Genomic-based revelation of genetic structure and adaptive characterization of Schizopygopsis malacanthus in the Jinsha River and Yalong River.

BACKGROUND: As a highly specialized class of schizothoracine fishes, Schizopygopsis malacanthus has attracted much attention due to its widespread distribution. To investigate the impact of the Qinghai‒Tibet movement on S. malacanthus, we analyzed the genetic evolutionary history of this species. RESULTS: These results showed that there was a high level of genetic differentiation between Jinsha River (JSR) populations and Yalong River (YLR) populations. The genetic diversity of intra-YLR populations was higher than that of the intra-JSR populations. There was gene exchange of the Suwalong population to the Huoqu and Ganzi populations. Furthermore, both of the JSR and YLR populations exhibited a gradual increase in the genetic differentiation index from low to high altitudes, and the effective population of high-elevation populations has gradually expanded. In high-altitude populations, the selected genes were enriched in DNA repair, light transduction, and energy metabolism, reflecting the genetic basis for their migration to higher altitudes. CONCLUSIONS: S. malacanthus populations had the higher genetic differentiation and genetic diversity in the JSR and its main tributary YLR. Therefore, we should preserve high-elevation natural river sections as much as possible and reserve habitats for their migration and diffusion.

Tumor prevalence and biomarkers of exposure and response in brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) from the Anacostia River, Washington, DC and Tuckahoe River, Maryland, USA.

We evaluated liver and skin tumor prevalence and biomarkers of exposure and response in brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) from three locations in the Anacostia River (Washington, DC, USA), a Chesapeake Bay region of concern. The Tuckahoe River (Maryland, USA) served as a reference. Each river was sampled in fall 2000 and spring 2001. In the Anacostia, prevalence of liver tumors was 50 to 68%, and prevalence of skin tumors was 13 to 23% in large (> or = 260 mm, age > or = 3 years) bullheads. Liver and skin tumor prevalence was 10 to 17% and 0%, respectively, in small (150-225 mm, age 1-2 years) bullheads. Tuckahoe bullhead liver tumor prevalence was 0 to 3% (large) and 0% (small); none had skin tumors. Biliary polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-like fluorescent metabolites and liver DNA adduct concentrations were elevated in large and small Anacostia bullheads. Mean adduct concentrations were 16 to 28 times higher than those in Tuckahoe fish. Chromatograms revealed a diagonal radioactive zone, indicating polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC)-DNA adducts. The biomarker data and the 10 to 17% liver tumor prevalence at ages 1 to 2 suggest that these year classes are likely to have a high prevalence as they reach age 3 and older. This study provides the strongest evidence to date of the role of PAHs in tumor development in Anacostia bullheads.

Concepts for river water quality processes for an integrated river basin modelling.

Although there are various ways to model the bio-chemical processes in rivers, two main trends can be distinguished: the traditional QUAL2E-type models and the RWQM-type models, developed by extending and adapting the ASM equations. Both approaches have their weak and strong points. This paper focuses on the application of these concepts in an integrated modelling context. To this purpose, the models were adapted to respect the mass balances, to enable linkage to WWTP outputs and to diffuse pollution sources. Both approaches have been included in ESWAT--Extended Soil and Water Assessment Tool--which was developed by the authors to allow for an integral modelling of the water quantity and quality processes in river basins. A comparison and evaluation of both quality models is performed for the river Dender (Belgium). It is shown that both models give a reasonable fit for dissolved oxygen and ammonia. However, the dynamics of the quality processes for the RWQM model are slower, due to the time that bacteria need to adapt to changes of the loads of organic matter.

Impact of agricultural practices and river catchment characteristics on river and bathing water quality.

The objective was to investigate the potential risk of faecal indicator organism (FIO) bacteriological contamination of river catchments and coastal bathing waters from farm management practices and to develop practices to reduce the risk. A risk assessment on 117 farms was carried out in two river catchments in south-west Scotland. Manure storage facilities, farming practices, field conditions and catchment characteristics were assessed. River samples at 33 locations were regularly taken and analysed for FIOs. Available manure storage capacity and farm management practices are inadequate on a high proportion of farms and FIO contamination of watercourses was likely the result of effluent transported into watercourses due to non-collection or poor containment. In addition, surface run-off or leaching following land application of manure or intensive stocking in adverse conditions was a high risk on up to 50% of farms. The concentrations of FIOs in the streams of two sub-catchments with high livestock intensity was 4 to 8 times higher compared to the two sub-catchments which had a low livestock intensity. The majority of potential risks of agricultural pollution to watercourses may be eliminated through improved manure and dirty water management, forward planning of manure spreading activities and improved operational procedures.

Correlation study of toxicity of substituted phenols to river bacteria and their biodegradability in river water.

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation of toxicity with biodegradability (BODT) in order to promote QSBR development and understand the degradation mechanism. METHODS: Toxicity of substituted phenols to river bacteria was determined by the turbidities that were measured using a spectrophotometer (UV-190) at 530 nm against a blank control. The biodegradability of substituted phenols was expressed as BODT and the DO concentrations were determined by the iodometric titration method. RESULTS: The BODT and toxicity(log 1/IC50) of 12 substituted phenols to bacteria from the Songhua River were determined respectively. The correlation of biodegradability with toxicity was developed: BODT=8.21 (+/-2.22) pKa -32.44 (+/-8.28) log 1/IC50 +89.04 (+/-38.20), n=12, R2=0.791, R2(adj)=0.745, SE=9.134, F=17.066, P=0.001. CONCLUSION: The BODT of substituted phenols was influenced by their toxicity and the ionization constant pKa. The stronger the toxicity, the less readily the compound was degraded by river bacteria.

Solubilities of trace copper and lead species and the complexing capacity of river water in the Linggi River Basin.

Chemical forms of copper and lead in river water of the Linggi River Basin have been fractionated into ASV labile, moderately labile, slowly labile, and inert metal species, based on a previously proposed scheme. Free (hydrated) metal ions were identified by a potentiometric method using an ion selective electrode. Speciation results showed that the soluble copper and lead species occurred mainly in the moderately labile and slowly labile fractions. The speciation results are primarily interpreted in terms of organic interaction due to agricultural based and light industries, and urban discharges. The measured metal complexing capacity (MCC) of the samples reveals consistency of the results with the nature of the discharge. MCC correlates reasonably well with the value from the permanganate test on the river water. In general, the speciation pattern was found to be consistent with the findings of other workers.

Methylmercury in water, seston, and epiphyton of an Amazonian river and its floodplain, Tapajós River, Brazil.

Levels and accumulation of MeHg were characterized in filtered water, suspended organo-mineral matter, phytoplankton, zooplankton and epiphyton during the dry season and the wet season. In open water of the lentic and lotic ecosystems, the MeHg in filtered water (< 0.2 microm) was near or below the detection limit (< 0.02-0.03 ng/l). These concentrations represent < 5% of the Hgtot. content in filtered water. Inundated forests (Igapó) and macrophyte floating mats were the only sites where MeHg was significantly detected (0.07-0.24 ng/l), representing 3-22% of the Hgtot. in filtered water. MeHg concentrations in organo-mineral suspended matter (2-26 ng/g dry wt. representing 0.6-7.3% of Hgtot.) were correlated with the N content but not with the C content. Data suggest that MeHg enrichment of suspended matter is strongly influenced by the presence of degraded planktonic remains relatively rich in N and MeHg. In zooplankton, MeHg concentrations (20-140 ng/g dry wt.) increased from the dry season to the end of the wet season. This increase was followed by higher proportions of MeHg during the wet season in comparison to the dry season (15-40 to 50-70% of the Hgtot.). The epiphytic material collected from the roots of macrophyte floating mats contained 2-8.5 ng/g dry wt. of MeHg. The proportion of MeHg to Hgtot. in epiphyton (1.5-8.3%) correlated with its C and N contents. The data suggest a greater bioavailability of MeHg in the Tapaj6s River ecosystems due to the seasonal increase in water level and the consequent inundation of the floodplain. Inundation favours the development of large macrophyte floating mats which increases the bioavailability of epiphyton to herbivorous/detritivorous fish. The root zone of floating macrophytes and the flooded organic horizon of the Igapó forest are the only sites along the Tapajós River where significant MeHg can be detected in the water column and sediment. This new study supports the hypothesis that MeHg production and transfer to the first link of the food chain in Amazonian river systems is closely related to organic matter biogeochemistry in the floodplain environment.

Water quality functioning of lowland permeable catchments: inferences from an intensive study of the RIVER KENNEt and upper River Thames.

This paper brings together information on the water quality functioning of the River Kennet and other parts of the upper River Thames in the south east of England. The Kennet represents a groundwater fed riverine environment impacted by agricultural and sewage sources of nutrient pollution. Descriptions of the general water quality of the area, nutrient sources, sinks and within river processes are provided together with biological responses to driving issues of agriculture, sewage treatment and climatic change. Models are developed and applied to assess the key processes involved for a highly dynamic system and to provide initial estimates of the likely responses to environmental change. Furthermore, the economic aspects of pollution control are reviewed, together with legislation issues, which are presented within the context of a landmark case known as the 'Axford Inquiry', the implications of which extend to regional and national dimensions. The paper concludes with a discussion on the present state of knowledge, key issues and future research on the science and management of groundwater fed nutrient impacted riverine systems.

Estimation of sources of total phosphorus in a river basin and assessment of alternatives for river pollution reduction.

The methodology of material flow analysis is presented and applied to developing a phosphorus balance in a river basin and evaluating different scenarios for pollution reduction. The method is based on the balance principle: inputs and outputs of each phosphorus-related subsystems were balanced. The application of the methodology strategies was illustrated by means of a case study of the Krka River, Slovenia. The results showed that besides effluents from wastewater treatment plants, agriculture contributed significantly to the total annual phosphorus load. After establishing the present levels of phosphorus balance, different scenarios were considered: different stages of wastewater treatment as well as management of agricultural activities. The present emission of phosphorus is estimated to be 81.8 tons/year; after implementation of measures, it would be 48.6 tons/year, a total reduction of 40%. Besides reduction of point sources by means of wastewater collection and implementation of nutrient removal technology, managing agricultural phosphorus to protect water quality should become a major challenge in the Krka river basin.

Occurrence and bioavailability of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and hexabromocyclododecane in sediment and fish from the Cinca River, a tributary of the Ebro River (Spain).

Fish and sediments from four places along the Spanish River Cinca were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). The samples were collected up- and downstream from Monzón, a heavily industrialized town draining to the river. PBDEs and HBCD were found in sediments at levels ranging from 2 to 42 ng/g dry weight and from not detected (nd) to 514 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Twenty-three fish samples (Barbus graellsi) collected at the same places were also analyzed, showing levels from nd to 446 ng/g wet weight for PBDEs and from nd to 1172 ng/g wet weight for HBCD. The lowest values for both sediment and fish samples were found upstream of the industry. Of 40 congeners (from mono- to deca-BDEs) included in the analytical work, 8 PBDE congeners were detected in river sediments, whereas 17 different PBDEs were found in fish samples. Large fish-to-sediment ratios for these brominated compounds indicate that they are highly bioavailable, with the exception of deca-BDE which was only detected in sediment samples. Concentrations of PBDEs and HBCD were slightly higher in muscle tissues than in liver samples obtained from the same specimen of fish. Moreover, PBDE and HBCD concentrations are correlated with fish length indicating the bioaccumulation of these contaminants.

Occurrence of dissolved PAHs in the Jinsha River (Panzhihua)--upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Southwest China.

16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in water samples from the Jinsha River (Panzhihua part), Southwest China. Total dissolved PAH concentrations varied from 21.89 microg l(-1) to 382.8 microg l(-1). It was found that the concentration of PAHs decreased along the flow direction due to the higher density distribution of coal chemical industry in the upstream of our study rivers. The pollution levels in our study area are significantly higher than previously reported values in other waters both in China and other countries. The predominance of benzo[k]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene was clearly observed in all water samples. On average these two compounds accounted for 98.3% of the total dissolved PAH concentration in water. The results showed the positive correlations among total dissolved PAHs, benzo[k]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, which suggested that these two predominant PAHs have similar source and environmental behaviors in our study area. When compared with the survey results of organic micropollutants two decades ago, it was found that hydrocarbon pollution both predominated and even increased with the development of coal chemical industry in this area during the past 20 years. The results therefore provide important information on the current contamination status of a key industrial city in China, and points to the need for urgent action to investigate the relationship between the PAH composition and concentration in water from the Jinsha River and the wastewater discharge from coal chemical industry, and to identify the source, transport pathway and fate of PAHs in the area. It should then be necessary to adopt appropriate and instant measures to control the pollution around this area.
