[Membrane filtration characteristics and its influencing factors in coagulation-microfiltration combination process for water purification].

A coagulation-microfiltration combination process was used to treat micro-polluted raw water in the intermittent operation mode. The effect of the operational parameters such as filtration time and aeration intensity, on the membrane filtration characteristics was investigated. An indicator J/p, defined as flux per unit pressure, was employed. At all the experimental conditions, J/p always fell down fast at first owing to membrane fouling, and then decreased slowly. But the initial decreasing rate and relative stable value of J/p in the latter period depended on the different operational parameters. J/p was greatly influenced by the filtration time, then the ratio of the filtration time to the ceasing time. Under the condition the filtration time was shortened by 1/2, the flux will increase by two times; when the ratio of filtration time/ceasing time was shortened, the flux was increased by only 50%. Higher J/p value could be achieved at the filtration time of 15 min and the ratio of filtration time/ceasing time of 3.8. Increased aeration intensity could enhance J/p to some extent. In the experiments, when the aeration intensity was increased from 2 to 4 m3/h, the membrane permeability was increased by about 15%; and the membrane permeability would not increased if the aeration intensity was continuously increased to 6 m3/h. Primary inorganic elements on the membrane surface at the present experimental condition were found to be Si and Ca from the element analysis.

[The evaluation of effluent water toxicity for the activated sludge in water purification facilities].

The condition of activated sludge, which predetermines the efficiency of functioning of purification facilities, depends to a great extent on a toxicity degree of waste-waters coming for purification. The results of a study of toxicity of effluents of an industrial enterprise by using the methods of the chemical-and-analytic and toxicological monitoring are described in the article. The conducted investigations made it possible to specify an effluents' flow, which is most toxic for the activated-sludge microorganisms, for the purpose of its further localization.

[Potential of nitrification and denitrification in water purification system with hydroponic bio-filter method].

The potential of nitrification and denitrification of sediment and the density of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in sediment in water quality purifying system with hydroponic bio-filter method (HBFM) were measured. The variation of nitrification and denitrification potential of the sediment along the stream way was quantitatively studied. The results show that among the sediments from front, middle and retral part of the stream way, the sediment from middle part reached a maximum nitrification potential . nitrification potential of 4.76 x 10(-6) g/(g x h), while the sediment from front part reached a maximum denitrification potential of 8 .1 x 10(-7) g/(g x h). The distribution of nitrification potential accords with the ammonium-oxidizing bacteria density. The key for improving nitrogen removal efficiency of HBFM system consists in changing nitrification & denitrification region distributing and accordingly enhances denitrification process.

Natural water-purification system observed in a shallow coastal lagoon: Matsukawa-ura, Japan.

Field surveys and in situ experiments were conducted in the shallow Matsukawa-ura in summer to evaluate the biological efficiencies of shallow-water areas for preserving coastal ecosystems. In Matsukawa-ura (5.8 km(2)), the suspension-feeding bivalves Ruditapes philippinarum and Crassostrea gigas were the dominant animals--their total biomasses (wet weight) were estimated to be 3.4 x 10(6) and 2.3 x 10(6) kg, respectively. Ulva sp. and Zostera marina were the dominant macrophyte species during the summer, with standing crops estimated to be 0.29 x 10(6) and 0.20 x 10(6) kg, respectively. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) uptake rates for Ulva sp. and Z. marina were determined by in situ experiments. An ecological model calculated on the basis of the observed dataset showed that, in comparison with tidal exchange, a significant amount of particulate organic matter was removed by bivalve filtration and a considerable quantity of DIN was removed by macrophyte species.

Re-evaluation and reconstruction of water purification system using soil. I. Assessment of soil as a sorbent of humic substances and phosphate ion.

The purpose of our study is to develop a treatment procedure for humic substances (HS hereafter) and phosphate ion in wastewater and environmental water by percolation of the water through a constructed soil layer at the hydraulic loading of a few metres per day. In the present work, batch sorption tests were conducted for more than 80 samples of soil, sludge, mineral and organic materials in order to find good sorbents for fulvic acid (FA hereafter) and phosphate ion. The results showed that the sorption of FA was high for some charcoal, and apatite and goethite minerals. Comparatively high sorption of FA was found for some Andosols and volcanic ash soil. Significant sorption of phosphate ion, on the other hand, was found for various types of soil, sludge from water treatment plants and some waste materials. The linear isotherm was obtained for the sorption of FA to a charcoal, apatite and goethite minerals, and Andosols.
