Physiological characteristics of motor units in the brachioradialis muscle across fatiguing low-level isometric contractions.

The purpose of this study was to determine (i) if decomposition-based quantitative electromyography (DQEMG) could detect changes in motor unit potential (MUP) morphology and motor unit (MU) firing pattern statistics associated with muscle fatigue, (ii) if any detected changes are correlated with surface electromyographic (SEMG) signs of fatigue, and (iii) if significant fatigue-dependent changes are repeatable within individuals. Mean MU firing rates and the morphology of MUPs detected using needle and surface electrodes during constant-torque isometric contractions held until exhaustion were investigated in the brachioradialis (BR) muscle in 10 healthy volunteers (mean age=28.6 yr, SD+/-3.9). Time dependant changes were investigated using an analysis of variance with normalized time as a main effect. Partial correlation coefficients were computed using a repeated measures analysis of covariance to determine if changes in MU firing rates, needle-detected MUPs and surface-detected MUPs (SMUPs) were related to changes in SEMG signal amplitude and frequency parameters. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to determine the within-subject repeatability of changes in MU firing rates, and MUP and SMUP parameters. Significant decreases in mean MU firing rates were found along with significant increases in various duration and area related parameters in both MUPs and SMUPs across the fatiguing contraction. The SEMG signal demonstrated the expected changes with fatigue: an increase in amplitude and a decrease in frequency content. SEMG amplitude was significantly positively correlated with SMUP peak-to-peak voltage (r=0.85, p<0.05), and SMUP area (r=0.86, p<0.05). Mean power frequency was significantly negatively correlated with SMUP negative peak duration (r=-0.74, p<0.05). The significant time-dependent changes were reliably observed (ICCs were 0.94 for MUP peak to peak amplitude, 0.97 for MUP area and 0.95 for MUP area to amplitude ratio, 0.95 for SMUP peak-to-peak voltage, 0.83 for SMUP area, 0.99 for SMUP negative peak amplitude and 0.88 for SMUP negative peak area). The decreases in mean MU firing rates measured along with the increases in amplitude, duration and area parameters of MUPs and SMUPs and their partial correlation with SEMG amplitude during submaximal fatiguing contractions of the BR, suggest that recruitment is a main cause of increased SEMG amplitude parameters with fatigue. We conclude that DQEMG can be effectively and reliably used to detect changes in physiological characteristics of MUs that accompany fatigue.

Physiological characteristics of allo-cholic acid.

The physiological characterstics of allo-cholic acid (ACA), a typically fetal bile acid that reappears during liver regeneration and carcinogenesis were investigated. [(14)C] Tauro-ACA (TACA) uptake by Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing rat organic anion transporter polypeptide (Oatp)1 or sodium-taurocholate cotransporter polypeptide (Ntcp) was lower than that of [(14)C]taurocholic acid (TCA). Although TACA inhibited ATP-dependent TCA transport across plasma membrane vesicles from Sf9 cells expressing rat or mouse bile salt export pump (Bsep), no ATP-dependent TACA transport was found. In rats, TACA was secreted into bile with no major biotransformation and it had lower clearance and longer half-life than TCA. In mice, TACA bile output was lower (-50%) than that of TCA, whereas TACA induced 9-fold higher bile flow than TCA. Even though the intracellular levels were lower for TACA, translocation into the hepatocyte nucleus was higher for TACA than for TCA; however, rate of DNA synthesis, expression levels of alpha-fetoprotein, albumin, Ntcp, and Bsep, cell viability, and apoptosis in rat hepatocytes were similarly affected by both isomers. In conclusion, TACA partly shares hepatocellular uptake system(s) for TCA. Furthermore, in contrast to other "flat" bile acids, TACA is efficiently secreted into bile via transport system(s) other than Bsep and is highly choleretic, hence its appearance during certain situations may prevent accumulation of cholestatic precursors.

Skeletal muscle and physiologic characteristics of a world champion masters distance runner: a case study.

Physiologic and skeletal muscle characteristics of a world champion and world record holder Masters distance runner were evaluated in the context of his race performances at age 50 and 51. Comparisons were made to data on other middle-aged runners and on younger, elite distance runners. The subject had a VO2 max of 62.6 mL.kg-1.min-1, an average value for elite, middle-aged runners, but a low value compared to elite, younger distance runners. The subject had a smaller proportion of ST fibers in his gastrocnemius muscle (51.9%) compared to elite distance runners (mean 70.7%) However, the subject had a higher phosphorylase activity and a succinate dehydrogenase activity that was in the same range for younger, elite distance runners. In addition, the subject's gastrocnemius muscle was characterized by small ST and FT fibers with a large capillary density, favoring oxygen diffusion. Despite a relatively modest VO2 max value, the subject has demonstrated superior performance criteria in races from 3 to 42.2 km and an apparent ability to run for several hours at a high percentage of his VO2 max. These capabilities correspond to his large muscle metabolic capacity and enhanced muscle capillarization.

The effect of season, occupation and repeated winterings on anthropologic and physiological characteristics in Russian antarctic staff.

UNLABELLED: Thirty anthropometric and ten physiological parameters were examined over a 10-month-period in 1985-86, in 66 male polar explorers, aged 25-61 years, at an Antarctic station (Mirny observatory). For 30 of these persons this was their first wintering in Antarctic while the remaining 36 had wintered there at least once before. The mentioned measurements were taken on 3 different occasions in April, September and January corresponding in the Antarctic to the beginning of the polar night and interim season period and the beginning of the polar day. Subjects of the investigation belonged to 3 occupational groups: administrative personnel, scientific staff, and manual laborers. Extended statistical analysis of the data was carried out in an attempt to distinguish the dynamics of the studied parameters in relation to the season of wintering (Climate), the number of previous winterings (Frequency), the type of occupation (Work), and their interactions. Multifactorial statistical analyses were also performed, so as to adjust for age of subjects, which is a requisite for evaluating the factor of repeating winterings, obviously age-related. Changes in a number of characteristics were clearly recognized as connected with the factor of repeating winterings, to wit: 1) Anthropometric parameters such as or subcutaneous fat and relative muscle mass; 2) Parameters pertaining to speed of neuromuscular response such as wrist muscle effort, or time of simple motor response; and 3) Physiological parameters encompassing vascular--blood pressure and respiratory--spirometric measurements. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that frequency of repeated winterings is not a leading factor influencing physical status of examinees. Occupational status of examinees alone or in interaction with repeated winterings and seasonal climatic factors have more prominent impact on the well-being of polar explorers.

Intra-axonal labeling of saccular afferents in the goldfish, Carassius auratus: correlations between morphological and physiological characteristics.

Lucifer yellow was used to label axons of 32 physiologically defined S1 afferent fibers and 23 physiologically defined S2 afferent fibers of the goldfish sacculus. Analysis of these labeled fibers allowed us to study the relationship between electrical activity in these primary neurons and the morphology of their peripheral arborizations in the sensory macula. Morphological characteristics were highly indicative of response type: The peripheral arborizations of individual S1 fibers occupied a relatively small region (approximately 40 microns in diameter) in the rostral one-fourth of the saccular macula, whereas those of individual S2 fibers covered a larger area (roughly 80 microns across) in the caudal part of the macula. In addition to this rostrocaudal dimension, a ventral projection was related to a rarefaction response, a dorsal projection was related to a compression response, and a two-sided innervation was related to fibers having both responses. S1 fibers had either large or small terminals; the S2 fibers had only small terminals. On average, S1 fibers gave rise to approximately four terminals (e.g., seven small terminals or one to two large terminals) and S2 fibers approximately ten terminals. Spontaneous discharges were absent in all S1 fibers but present in some S2 fibers. Such S2 fibers showed spontaneous activity of either an irregular type or a burst type. In these, there was a tendency for fibers having more extensive arborizations to exhibit a burst type of spontaneous discharge. We conclude that structure-function relationships can be determined for these primary neurons.

Morphological and physiological characteristics of Gemmiger formicilis isolated from chicken ceca.

Morphological and physiological studies were made on chicken cecal isolates of the strictly anaerobic bacterial species Gemmiger formicilis. Structural features (phase-contrast and electron microscopy) of these microorganisms indicate they (i) are highly pleomorphic, (ii) possess a trilaminar cell wall like gram-negative bacteria, (iii) exhibit an unusual growth process characterized by polar swelling (resembling budding bacteria), and (iv) grow into elongated cells when exposed to a subinhibitory concentration of penicillin. The morphological data presented suggest that this species has a rod-shaped structure. These bacteria ferment a variety of sugars to produce formic, butyric, and lactic acids. There appear to be two groups of Gemmiger, one producing primarily lactate and the other producing formate as major fermentation metabolites. Growth of six strains in a basal medium, consisting of Trypticase, minerals, carbohydrate, Na2CO3 buffer, and cysteine as reducing agent, was stimulated by rumen fluid and yeast extract. Volatile fatty acids partially replaced the requirement for rumen fluid with some strains. Single deletions of vitamins (from a defined vitamin mixture) indicated that pantothenate, riboflavin, and thiamine were highly stimulatory to growth of the organism in a medium containing rumen fluid and Trypticase as source of vitamins. Other vitamin requirements were not studied.

[Evoked potentials: their spatial physiological characteristics and the problem of their functional assessment].

Basic data about physiological evoked responses properties of the brain structures highest level (telencephalon) are presented. Contemporary ideas concerned to mechanisms of these responses are summed up. Data about their distribution in telencephalic structures and morphological basis of the distribution are adduced. The evoked responses especialities of telencephalic structures in awake animals in chronic experiments are revealed. The functional significance of processes that form this bioelectrical reaction is observed. Special attention is paid to earlier (to 100 ms) components. The possibility to use the evoked responses as the functional instruments of investigations of the brain is discussed.

Physiologic characteristics of 1,268 cultures of Pasteurella multocida.

Results of 29 physiologic tests are reported for 1,268 cultures of Pasteurella multocida from various hosts over a 10-year period. Of the cultures, 97 to 100% fermented galactose, glucose, mannitol, mannose, fructose, and sucrose, produced hydrogen sulfide and indole, and reduced nitrate; 6 to 91% fermented arabinose, glycerol, sorbitol, trehalose and xylose. Fermentation of dextrin, dulcitol, inositol, inulin, lactose, maltose, raffinose, rhamnose, and salicin, growth on MacConkey agar, change of litmus milk, production of urease and hemolysin, liquefaction of gelatin and motility were negative with 97 to 100% of the cultures. Of 200 cultures tested for catalase and oxidase, all were positive. Results of this study indicate that none of these tests will determine the host from which the culture was isolated.

Physiological Characteristics of Photosynthesis and Respiration in Stems of Populus tremuloides Michx.

The physiological responses of 6- to 8-year-old aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) stems to temperature, light, and CO(2) concentration were investigated in the field throughout the year using infrared CO(2) analysis. Light response studies showed that the rate of gross photosynthesis was linear from 0 to 400 ft-c (0 to 1.6 mw/cm(2) of 400-700 nm) with light saturation being reached between 800 to 1400 ft-c (3.2 to 5.6 mw/cm(2) of 400-700 nm). At this light intensity, the respiratory CO(2) loss was reduced to 10 to 15% of dark rates. Net photosynthetic CO(2) uptake was not observed even at intensities as high as 3400 ft-c (13.6 mw/cm(2) of 400-700 nm). The light response curve was similar for both winter and summer stems.During summer months, the respiratory and photosynthetic rates of the aspen stem increased with temperature at a near constant rate between 5 and 35 C. For winter stems, the gross photosynthetic rate increased in a pattern similar to the dark respiratory rate as the temperature rose from 3 to 17 C. Below 0 C and above 17 C, however, the gross photosynthetic rate fell off in relation to the respiratory rate so that the per cent of CO(2) reassimilated decreased from 75% to less than 50%. Measurable bark photosynthetic activity was not observed below -3 C.The gross photosynthetic rate of stems was not affected when the gas passing through the cuvette contained concentrations of CO(2) ranging from 0 to 580 mul CO(2)/l air.

Physiological characteristics of high-ability prepubescent wrestlers.

The present study compared the physiological responses to exercise, the anaerobic fitness, and the body composition of high-ability prepubescent wrestlers and normally active boys. The wrestlers (N = 15, mean age +/- S.D. = 11.3 +/- 0.30 yr) were recruited to participate in a summer wrestling camp. Their wrestling experience averaged 3.0 +/- 1.63 yr, during which time they won 78 +/- 10.5% of the matches. The comparison boys (N = 13, 10.7 +/- 0.36 yr) were volunteers from a local Boy's Club. Each subject performed a graded treadmill exercise test (Bruce protocol) and an anaerobic cycle ergometer test. Additionally, body composition was assessed using densitometry and skinfolds. There were no differences (P greater than 0.05) between the wrestlers and the comparison subjects for age or height. The wrestlers exercised for 1.5 min longer on the treadmill and obtained a higher VO2max (54.0 +/- 1.15 ml X min-1 X kg-1, P less than 0.05) than the comparison subjects (45.6 +/- 2.10 ml X min-1 X kg-1). Also, the wrestlers had higher anaerobic test scores, greater body densities, and lower subcutaneous fat totals at all sites than the normally active boys. These data indicate that the favorable fitness and body composition scores found previously for more mature wrestlers are already present in prepubescent wrestlers.

Physiological characteristics of elite judo athletes.

In order to provide some understanding of the physiological capacities underlying successful judo performance, representative values for a variety of physiological variables were determined in nationally ranked male (n = 18) and female (n = 9) judo athletes. Body composition, aerobic capacity, isokinetic elbow and knee flexor and extensor strength, and muscle fiber size and composition of the vastus lateralis were examined. Comparisons across weight divisions indicate that the values of many characteristics varied as a function of size. As weight division increased, relative VO2 decreased (r = -0.53 and -0.63 for males and females, respectively), % body fat increased (r = 0.64, 0.72), and the cross sectional areas of Type I (r = 0.55, 0.77) and Type IIA (r = 0.47, = 0.76) muscle fibers increased. Among females in particular, athletes in the higher weight divisions were stronger relative to LBM than those in the lower division. These results indicate that the physiological profiles of lower and upper weight division elite judo players differ markedly. It is suggested that the factors responsible for success may be specific to each weight division and may represent a compromise between making weight and maximizing physiological capacities and performance.

Source parameters of the left ventricle related to the physiological characteristics of the cardiac muscle.

An attempt is made here to correlate the physiological muscle parameters with the dynamic source parameters of the left ventricle (LV), i.e. the source (isovolumic) pressure Po and the source (internal) resistance, Rs. The internal resistance is described here as a time-dependent parameter, corresponding to the pressure drop (from the theoretical instantaneous isovolumic pressure) associated with the instantaneous ejection flow rate. The source pressure, which relates to the muscle stress and the ventricular volume, is represented by the time-varying elastance concept and a spheroidal model relating the average wall stress to LV pressure. Linear and exponential force-velocity relationships (FVR), expressed in stress-strain rate terms, are compared. Two possible characteristics of the dynamic FVR in the partially active state, based on either a parallel or a fanlike shift of the stress-strain rate curve, are studied by utilizing simple analytical models as well as a computer simulation model. Comparing the calculated results with experimental data indicates that the dynamic FVR shift occurs in a fanlike pattern in which the maximum strain rate remains constant throughout the cycle. This pattern of the FVR shift is consistent with experimental data that show that the internal resistance is linearly related to the instantaneous isovolumic pressure. The analysis also indicates that the difference between the hyperbolic and linear FVR is rather minor, and in spite of some effects on the ejection pattern and the value of Rs, the functional shape has no effect on the global LV characteristics, such as the ejection fraction and stroke volume.

Clinical and physiological characteristics of autonomic failure with Parkinson's disease.

We analyzed the clinical and physiological features of autonomic failure with Parkinson's disease (AF-PD) in seven patients and compared them with those of autonomic failure with multiple system atrophy (AF-MSA). In AF-PD, parkinsonism was more gradually progressive than in AF-MSA, and symptoms were responsive to L-dopa. All seven patients with AF-PD had orthostatic hypotension, postprandial hypotension, and constipation, but no urinary retention. Of these, three had hypohidrosis and five had frequent urination; five patients had subnormal plasma norepinephrine (NE) concentrations. Supersensitivity to NE infusion was observed in all patients. Head-up tilting (HUT) test resulted in no increase of plasma NE concentrations in both groups, but a significant increase of the plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) concentrations in the patients with AF-PD. Urodynamic studies revealed that urinary bladder function was relatively well preserved in AF-PD in contrast to AF-MSA. In conclusion, there exists some clinical and physiological differences in autonomic features between AF-PD and AF-MSA, and postganglionic involvement predominates in AF-PD.

The anthropometrical and physiological characteristics of elite water polo players.

In order to examine the physical and physiological demands of water polo, we assessed the profile of elite water polo players. Nineteen male professional water polo players (age: 25.5+/-5.0 years, height: 184.5+/-4.3 cm body mass: 90.7+/-6.4 kg) underwent body composition assessment by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We also evaluated peak oxygen consumption VO2peak, lactate threshold (LT), energy cost of swimming (C s), anaerobic capacity and isokinetic shoulder strength. Body fat (%) was 16.8+/-4.4, lean mass (LM) 75.1+/-4.9 kg and bone mineral density (BMD) 1.37+/-0.07 g.cm(-2) . VO2peak was 57.9+/-7 ml.kg(-1). min(-1) . LT was identified at 3.9+/-0.7 mmol.l(-1) at a swimming velocity (v) of 1.33+/-0.05 m.s(-1) with a heart rate of 154+/-7 bpm, corresponding to an intensity of 83+/-9 of VO2peak. The average C s of swimming at the LT was 1.08+/-0.04 kJ.m(-1).C s at LT was correlated to body mass index (BMI) (r=0.22, P=0.04) and to swimming performance at 400 m (r=0.86, P=0.01) and 4 x 50 m (r=0.84, P<0.01). Internal rotator muscles were stronger compared to the external rotators by a 2:1 ratio. This study provides a quantitative representation of both physical and physiological demands of water polo and proposes a comprehensive battery of tests that can be used for assessing the status of a team.

[Clinical-physiological characteristics and hormone therapy of patients with typical form of climacteric syndrome].

Clinical and physiological examinations of 76 women in the postmenopause revealed in 64 of them the typical form of the climacteric syndrome, characterized by not only typical symptoms ("flushes", increased exudation, headaches, etc.), but also by various emotional vegetative disturbances detected at profound clinical neurological examination of the autonomic nervous system and the emotional sphere. Individual hormone therapy was associated with an appreciable alleviation of all psychovegetative disorders: "flushes", exudation, irritability, arterial hypertension, severity of vegetative dystonia, hysterical stigmata.
