[Biochemical genetic markers in the study of the larvivorous fish Cubanichthys cubensis (Eigenmann, 1903) (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) used as a bioregulator agent of culicids in Cuba].

By means of starch gel electrophoresis, samples were analyzed from 3 populations (Batabanó, Guanímar and Isle of Youth) of Cubanichthys cubensis adult fishes, bioregulators of mosquito larvae. A study was made of six protein systems which are considered to be under the genetic regulation of 13 loci, 3 of which are polymorphic. The electrophoretic characteristics of each of them are described. By means of the genotypical frequencies of the polymorphic systems (PGI-1, PGI-2, and PGM), the 3 populations were compared with the use of the statistical G. No significant differences were found.

Virulence factors of A. caviae strains isolated from acute diarrheic disease in Cuba.

Fifty Aeromonas caviae strains from intestinal infection in different Cuban provinces were identified by the Aerokey II method and virulence factors were investigated. The strains did not produce haemolysins but other exoenzymes such as proteases, lipases, and DNases; additionally, all isolates adhered to the HEp-2 cell line by the Carrello method and this did not correlate with other virulence factors presence which demonstrates that the haemolysin phenotypic expression is not necessary for these strains to be pathogenic and that pathogenicity is multifactorial, each strain expressing at least one virulence factor.

[Nitrogen composition of the fruit juice of the Persian lime in Cuba].

In 1987 to 1989 the composition was studied of the nitrogen compounds (nitrogen and free amino acids) in the fruit juice of Persian lime during its commercial harvesting period. Adult Persian lime trees grafted on Citrus macrophylla and C. volkameriana were used, planted on a groundwater-affected red ferrilytic soil in the La Habana Province. Determination of the total nitrogen and of the free proline was carried out in May to July of each experimental year. The amino acid spectrum was established from juice samples in May 1987 and in July 1988. With the nitrogen concentrations varying between 14 and 90 mg/100 ml of juice, no consistent behaviour or pattern could be detected either in the total nitrogen content or the proline content in the juice during the 3 experimental years. 14 free amino acids were found, with about 90% of the total content formed from asparagine acid, glutamic acid, alanine, proline, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and arginine, regardless of the experimental year or the grafting basis.

[Rehabilitation of mentally ill patients in Cuba].

A brief exposition of the elements that support the importance of the psychiatric chronic patient rehabilitation all over the world is done. The main elements of the model of psychiatric rehabilitation developed by the Havana Psychiatric Hospital are presented.

[Clinical and epidemiologic aspects of acute diarrhea caused by rotavirus in children. Cuba, 1982-1984].

A total of 256 infants younger than three years, hospitalized by acute diarrhea, was studied from December 1983 to May 1984. Presence of rotavirus in their feces was demonstrated in 27.7%; in 4.3% of them, rotaviruses were associated with other agents. Vomiting followed by respiratory symptoms and fever were the main clinical symptoms observed in such patients, and in most of them diarrhea was profuse and liquid. Influence on infection by rotavirus of maternal feeding, hygienic-sanitary conditions, presence of domestic animals, and so forth, could not be demonstrated.

[A group of African students parasitized with Mansonella perstans in Cuba (a non-endemic area) from 1979 to 1982].

Sixty cases of Manzonella perstans were studied during a three year period by clinical and blood parasitologic studies. It was observed that 31.2 was negative and that mean microfilaremia decreased from 49.3, at the beginning of the study, to 32.9 at the end of it, in those cases yet positive. According to the persistent microfilaremia, which means a relative longevity of adult parasites, the surveillance of individuals suffering it is recommended at their arrival to a non-endemic area where the vectors of such disease are present.

[Levamisole, mebendazole, thiabendazole. Their effectiveness as helminthicides in African patients recently arrived in Cuba. From 1987 to 1988].

Ninety one passengers coming from Africa, carriers of geohelminthes, were selected and treated with helminthicides of large use in our country (levamisole, mebendazole, thiabendazole). An excellent effective response was obtained for Ascaris lumbricoides (96.5%), and a good effective response was obtained for the rest of the parasites: Trichuri trichiura (88.5%), Strongyloides stercoralis (87.5%), and Necator americanus (78.9), according to data of therapeutical response efficiency of the WHO.

[Indirect immunofluorescence in filariasis. II. Humoral response in a population living close to a patient with confirmed Wuchereria bancrofti (Nematoda: Filarioidea), Cuba, 1983].

This paper deals with the study by Knott technique, membrane filter and indirect immunofluorescence, of 256 individuals living in Pinar del Rio City, neighbors of a patient suffering elephantiasis produced by Wuchereria bancrofti, 111 donors of the blood bank in the same city, and 10 patients coming from endemic areas who were hospitalized at the "Pedro Kouri" Tropical Medicine Institute, with certainty diagnosis of bancroftiasis. Circulating microfilariae were not found in the neighbors of the positive case, however, a high antifilaria antibody titer (1:512) was observed in the neighbors, suggesting it that in any time this population could have been in contact with this parasite.

[Indirect immunofluorescence in filariasis. I. Standardization of the technique. Cuba, 1983].

Indirect immunofluorescence was standardized for the diagnosis of human filiariae, using antigens of Dipetalonema viteae. Due to the determined sensibility and specificity, the tier of 1:512 was recommended for aiding clinicians in the individual diagnosis of suspicious patients and that of 1:256 for epidemiologic studies. The titers of cross reactions were less than 1:128.

[Indirect immunofluorescence in filariasis. III. Comparison of microfilaremia and treatment. Cuba, 1983].

Twenty six patients coming from endemic areas, with diagnosis of filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Loa loa and Manzonella (Dipetalonema perstans) and 29 patients suspicious of suffering filariasis were studied by means of Knott, membrane filter and indirect immunofluorescence techniques. Results of microfilaremia were compared with antibody titers and it was verified that there was not relationship between these parameters. The suspicious patients presented higher antibody levels than those of the verified patients. In additions, a preliminary study was carried out on the serologic behaviour of some patients treated with diethylcarbamazine (6 mg/kg daily, during 14 days) and increase of antibody titers was observed in most of the cases after three days and a decrease after the first month of treatment.
