We have studied, for the first time, the energy and the linewidth dispersion of a plasmon in a dense two-dimensional electron system in a metallic surface-state band on a silicon surface. As expected from the considerably high effective density and long Fermi wavelength of the system, the plasmon energy dispersion exhibited an excellent agreement with the nearly free-electron theory. However, in a small wave number region below the Landau edge, we have observed an anomalous linewidth dispersion which nearly free-electron theories do not predict.

Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)(2) are presented. In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations.

It is demonstrated theoretically that the counter-rotating quadrupole mode in a vortex of Bose-Einstein condensates can decay into a pair of Kelvin modes via the Beliaev process. We calculate the spectral weight of a density-response function within the Bogoliubov framework, taking account of both Beliaev and Landau processes. Good agreement with experiment on 87 Rb by Bretin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 100403 (2003)]] allows us to unambiguously identify the decayed mode as the Kelvin wave propagating along a vortex line.
The ferromagnetic relaxation caused by the surface roughness induced 2-magnon scattering is investigated. Approximate analytical solution predicts nonexponential decay of the uniform precession excitations of the form exp[-|t/tau3/2|3/2]. This behavior as well as the dependence of the decay time tau(3/2) on roughness parameters are confirmed by micromagnetic simulations.
