[Nasal sarcoidosis. Report of the first case in Cuba].

This paper describes the case of a 58-year-old woman suffering from nasal mucous membrane involvement from sarcoidosis, and stresses the importance of the otorhinolaryngological manifestations of this disease and the role of the ORL specialist in diagnosing it. We note that sarcoidosis may first appear in the form of this type of symptoms and that in cases of uncertain or unusual etiology, a histopathological study is essential in diagnosing this process. We then review the treatment used by different authors in the literature, which we also applied to our patient.

[Mortality by crushing in domestic pigs: study of the causes and their relationship to the time and the month of the year in the climatic conditions of Cuba].

In the course of 3 years a complex of 25,000 pigs were investigated once per week for the dead among the 398 sucking piglets, and in the case of losses due to crushing to death the type of lesions and the connection with diseases was investigated. Of the piglets investigated, 88 were crushed to death (21.2%), among them 65 (73.8%) diseased--mainly infected by coli bacilli (60 = 68.2%)--and 23 (5.8%) healthy animals. The losses due to crushing to death were highest in January and differed from all other months of the year (p less than 0.05). Another peak of losses in July was only significant (p less than 0.05) as compared with the values of April and November. January and July also exhibited the highest proportion of coli-infected piglets. The most frequent lesions were edema and cyanosis of the skin, of the mucous membrane, and the hypodermic tissue, haemothorax and haemoperitonaeum, liver cracks, lung cracks, kidney cracks, stomach cracks, large intestine cracks, and multiple fractures of the ribs and of the skull. It is concluded that the losses due to crushing to death can be related to the decrease in vitality of the piglets due to diseases, caused in winter by decreased vitality and in summer by pressure caused by coli infection.

[Mortality from acute diarrheal diseases in children under 5 years of age. Cuba, 1959-1987].

Mortality from acute diarrheal diseases in Cuban children under 5 for the period 1959-1987 is analyzed. The data come from the Public Health Ministry's National Bureau of Statistics and other sources. The death rate in children under 5 declined from 28.5 per 10,000 in 1959 to 1.4 in 1987, or 95.1%. In the 1-4 age group it was reduced by 97.8%, and in those under 1 year, by 94.2%. In 1959 the deaths from acute diarrheal diseases represented 30.6% of all deaths in children under 5; 29.5% in those under 1 year, and 34.0 in those between 1 and 4. In contrast, by 1987 the respective figures had fallen to 4.1, 4.5, and 2.2%. The acute diarrheal disease situation in several countries of the Americas is stated for purposes of comparison and, finally, factors that have helped to lower mortality from this cause are analyzed as are other factors which will contribute to lower it in the future.

Clinical features of Hodgkin's disease in Cuba and Sweden.

A clinical study of 182 Swedish and 164 Cuban consecutive adult patients with Hodgkin's disease was performed comparing age, sex, histopathology, clinical stage, symptoms, and various laboratory tests. A bimodal age distribution was observed which was more pronounced in the Swedish series. A male/female ratio 1.8/1.0 in both samples was observed. Nodular sclerosis and Stage IA and IIA were more common in Swedish patients while in the Cuban, mixed cellularity and Stage IIIB and IVB dominated in patients below fifty years of age. The Swedish patients exhibited an age distribution similar to that found in other industrialized Western countries, while the Cuban patients had an age distribution pattern typical for countries with an intermediate epidemiological pattern.
