Mangabey(Cercocebus albigena). Social organization and population density in relation to food use and availability.

Data are presented on the feeding behavior and activities of mangabeys (Cercocebus albigena) in the Ngogo study area, Kibale Forest, Uganda. Mangabeys spend 47% of activity observations feeding, 27% moving, and the remainder of the activity observations is accounted for by grooming, playing, vocalizing, copulating, etc. Feeding on fruit constitutes 58% of feeding records, arthropods 25%, young leaves and flowers 10%, cambium 5% and rare and unidentified items 2%. 29 tree species are used as sources of vegetable food and 31 tree species are used as substrate for arthropod search. Mangabeys move an average distance of 1,299 m per day, and use an average of 28,50 X 50 m quadrats per day. The activity patterns, the types and number of food species, the daily distances traveled, and the number of quadrats used per day, are not significantly different from those found in the literature for mangabeys in the Kanyawara research area, Kibale Forest, Uganda. Mangabey population density in Ngogo is approximately 1.46 times that of the Kanyawara mangabeys. The difference in density is associated with Ngogo exhibiting a greater mangabey food tree density than is found at Kanyawara. The higher mangabey density in Ngogo is associated with an average group size similar to that at Kanyawara, and an increase in the number of groups per unit area. The greater number of groups is accommodated by the mangabey having smaller home ranges, and less home range overlap than do the Kanyawara mangabeys. I suggest that these results are compatible with an interpretation based on disease control via regulation of group size, and social and spatial isolation between groups. The role of food availability in regulation of group size, or determining land tenure systems remains uncertain.

Ecological constraints on group size in three species of neotropical primates.

The foraging strategies and association patterns of 3 species of primates (Ateles geoffroyi, Alouatta palliata, Cebus capucinus) were studied over a 5-year period. The objective of the study was to provide a quantitative test of the hypothesis that the size, density and distribution of food resources influence the size of animal groups. In examining the assumptions of this hypothesis, it was shown that these primates used resources that occurred in patches, depleted the patches through their use, and that membership in large subgroups was associated with increased travel costs. The howler and spider monkey groups formed subgroups, the size of which could be predicted from the size, density and distribution of their plant food resources. When resources were clumped and at a low density, both the howler and spider monkeys were found in small subgroups, whereas when patches were uniformly distributed and at high density they formed larger subgroups. Capuchin monkeys, in contrast, did not respond to changes in these ecological variables by forming subgroups or changing the cohesion of their group.

[Population interactions between Triatoma infestans and Triatoma sordida].

Populations of T. infestans and T. sordida were studied between September 1988 and April 1989 with a view to discovering if any kind of interaction took place between them while they lives together in the same experimental unit and exploited the same food resource (chicken). The initial age structure for each species was: 27 N1, 7 N2, 11 N3, 3 N4, 8 N5, 4 males and 10 females. The population dynamics nutritional status, predation and gregarious behavior were estimated by means of a monthly census. The colonizing success of T. infestans was greater than that of T. sordida in view of the values obtained: fecundity (146 eggs/female), longevity (157.8 days) and mortality (39.4) compared with the values recorded for T. sordida: 118 eggs/female, 81.1 days and 54.0% respectively. The population growth of T. insfestans followed an exponential model, with a high nymphal recruitment rate, while the T. sordida population was early extinguished. In general, the average weight of T. infestans remained close to the initial values while that of T. sordida declined. Gregarious groups were formed principally in the inferior sector of wall 1 (near the host) with a higher aggregation in T. infestans. These results make it possible to propose the hypothesis of the competitive superiority of T. infestans.

Persistent ancestral feeding structures in nonfeeding annelid larvae.

Evolutionary loss of the requirement for feeding in larvae of marine invertebrates is often followed by loss of structures involved in capturing and digesting food. Studies of echinoderms suggest that larval form evolves rapidly in response to loss of the requirement for feeding, but a lack of data from other taxa makes it difficult to assess the generality of this result. I show that many members of a large clade of annelids, the Sabellidae, retain ancestral systems for particle capture despite loss of the need and ability to feed. In at least one species, Schizobranchia insignis, an opposed-band system of prototrochal, food-groove, and metatrochal ciliary bands can concentrate suspended particles and transport them to the mouth, but captured particles are invariably rejected because larvae lack a functional gut. The persistence of particle capture systems in larvae of sabellids suggests that they have lost larval feeding very recently, that opposed bands are inexpensive to construct and operate, or that opposed bands have some alternative function. These observations also suggest a hypothesis on how the ability to feed is lost in larvae of annelids and other spiralians following increases in egg size.

[cDNA cloning of ju-myo protein (JP) and elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which it exerts neurotrophic effects on neurons].

The adult life span in inbred strains of Drosophila melanogaster (Dm) has been found to be controlled by a few major genes (Hereditas 111:207, 1989; Hereditas 117: 251, 1992). A 77 kDa protein, which we named ju-myo (life-span) protein (JP) and is supposed to be the product of the gene on autosomal locus JmA on adult Dm was shown to have life-span prolonging effect when it was supplied in food. However, the knowledge of its structure and molecular mechanisms by which JP exerts its effects on cells is still unclear. Here we show that JP can exert neurotrophic activities on postmitotic fetal rat neurons isolated from cerebral cortical and dopaminergic neurons isolated from the midbrain: it enhanced survival of MAP2-positive cells and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive neurons by approximately 2-fold over the control group. JP did not increase the density of astrocytes nor expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the mesencephalic neuron cultures. Amino acid analysis of JP protein showed that JP is identical to the larval serum protein 2, of which sequence and structure were determined in 1997. Our work provides basis for defining the physiological role of JP at the molecular level and for exploring its potential utility as an alternative approach to study mechanisms of aging.

[Phytoestrogens in food--a review].

The steroid hormone estrogen influences female and male reproductive system, 17-beta-oestradiol is the major human oestrogen. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring oestrogens in many foods of plant origin. They are structurally and functionally similar to 17-beta-oestradiol or produce estrogenic effects. It is suggested that phytoestrogens could lower risk of diseases accompanied woman in meno- and postmenopausal stage. They are consider to decrease risk of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease. This report presents the literature review on nutritious and health aspects connected with phytoestrogens. Generally authors confirm the possibility of beneficial health effects of phytoestrogens in humans.

[Aflatoxins in food: tests of decontamination of peanut cakes by ionizing treatment].

The efficacy of ionising treatment for decontaminating peanut cakes was tested. The influence of cakes water content and the effect of ionisation dose rate were studied. The results obtained after a reverse phase liquid chromatographic determination of B1, B2, G1 and G2 aflatoxins have revealed an important contamination of the peanut cakes (up to 1000 ppb of total aflatoxin's contents). After ionising treatment at 25 kGy, the aflatoxins degradation in peanut cake's was less important in dried samples (about 5-10% at 0.55 water activity: aw) than in the humid ones (40-60% degradation at 0.95 water activity). At this dose, any indicative difference of the degradation rate of aflatoxins, with regard to the ionising process was observed. The efficacy of ionising treatment for decontaminating peanut cakes could probably be improved, however the economic interest of such process as alternative of the treatment with ammonia is questionable.
