Amphiphilic Janus micelles with polystyrene and poly(methacrylic acid) hemispheres.

We describe the synthesis and the solution properties of Janus micelles containing a polybutadiene (PB) core and a compartmentalized corona consisting of a poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) and a polystyrene (PS) hemisphere. The Janus micelles were obtained via cross-linking the middle block of a microphase-separated PS-block-PB-block-PMMA triblock copolymer in the bulk state, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) ester groups. Results of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, field flow fractionation, light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning force microscopy indicate that above a critical aggregation concentration of about 0.03 g/L spherical supermicelles are formed from about 30 PS-PMAA micelles in aqueous solution in the presence of NaCl. These supermicelles have radii of 40-60 nm, significantly increasing on ionization (pH >6). In addition, very large spherical objects are observed with radii of 100-250 nm.

Solvent-free asymmetric olefin hydroformylation catalyzed by highly cross-linked polystyrene-supported (R,S)-BINAPHOS-Rh(I) complex.

Using an (R,S)-BINAPHOS-Rh(I) catalyst that is covalently anchored to a highly cross-linked polystyrene support, asymmetric hydroformylation of olefins was performed in the absence of organic solvents. The reaction of cis-2-butene, a gaseous substrate, provided (S)-2-methylbutanal with 100% regioselectivity and 82% ee upon treatment with H(2) (12 atm) and CO (12 atm) in a batchwise reactor equipped with a fixed bed. The polymer-supported catalyst was applicable to a continuous vapor-flow column reactor, and thus, 3,3,3-trifluoropropene was converted into (S)-2-trifluoromethylpropanal with an iso/normal ratio of 95/5 and 90% ee. Less volatile olefins, such as styrene, vinyl acetate, 1-alkenes, and fluorinated alkenes, were successfully converted into the corresponding isoaldehydes with high ee values, when they were injected through a supercritical CO(2)-flow column reactor. Successive injection of a series of olefins realized the conversion of an olefin library into an optically active aldehyde library.

Nanoporous materials with spherical and gyroid cavities created by quantitative etching of polydimethylsiloxane in polystyrene-polydimethylsiloxane block copolymers.

A new method for quantitative etching of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) block in polystyrene-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PS-PDMS) block copolymers is reported. Reacting the block copolymer with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride renders a nanoporous material (NPM) with the remaining glassy PS maintaining the original bulk morphology. 1H NMR, mass difference, size exclusion chromatography, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the materials before and after etching. NPMs containing spherical and gyroid cavities were prepared, as ascertained by small-angle X-ray scattering. This is the first report on block copolymer-based NPM films of millimeter thickness containing secluded spherical holes. Surface images by AFM and SEM are consistent with the SAXS findings.

Segment dynamics in thin polystyrene films probed by single-molecule optics.

Single fluorescent molecules (represented by spheres with a volume equal to the actual van der Waals volume of the molecule) has been embedded in a polystyrene matrix (left). Such molecules act as probes for the study of polymer nanoscale (segmental scale) dynamics in thin films deposited on a glass cover slide (right).

Orientational properties of stretched polystyrene gels in organic solvents and the suppression of their residual 1H NMR signals.

While residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) are an established method in high-resolution biomolecular NMR, their use for structure determination of small molecules in organic solvents is limited by the alignment media available. Only recently stretched polystyrene (PS) gels were introduced for the measurement of RDCs on small compounds that allowed urgently needed free scalability of the induced anisotropy. Here, the properties of such stretched PS gels in different organic solvents as well as for different magnetic field strengths and temperatures are studied and practical NMR-spectroscopic aspects are discussed.

A supramolecular triarm star polymer from a homotritopic tris(crown ether) host and a complementary monotopic paraquat-terminated polystyrene guest by a supramolecular coupling method.

The first supramolecular star polymer based on pseudorotaxane host-guest complexation was prepared from statistical complexation of a homotritopic tris(crown ether) host and monotopic paraquat-terminated polystyrene guest in solution. The formation of this supramolecular star polymer was confirmed by proton NMR characterization and viscosity studies.

Direct radical polymerization of 4-styryldiphenylphosphine: preparation of cross-linked and non-cross-linked triphenylphosphine-containing polystyrene polymers.

We report herein a simple synthesis of 4-styryldiphenylphosphine and the radical copolymerization of it with styrene, both with and without a cross-linker, to directly form cross-linked and non-cross-linked polystyrene supported triphenylphosphine in which the level of phosphine incorporation can be easily and accurately controlled. The utility of these polymers is demonstrated by their use in Mitsunobu and alcohol bromination reactions.

Crystallization and photovoltaic properties of titania-coated polystyrene hybrid microspheres and their photocatalytic activity.

The hybrid microspheres with polystyrene core coated by titania nanoparticles were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization, and the as-prepared samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, XPS, and SPS techniques. TiO2 nanoparticles experienced two processes of phase transition, i.e., amorphous to anatase and anatase to rutile at the calcining temperature range from 400 to 1000 degrees C. The phase transformation temperature of TiO2 hybrid microspheres from anatase to rutile was increased by about 300 degrees C due to the blocking function of calcined polymer remainder. SPS results present that the band-gap of hybrid microspheres is 3.2-3.4 eV, which is larger than that of pure TiO2. The maximum intensity of the SPS signal is about 3 times larger for the hybrid material as compared to the pure TiO2. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation rate of TiO2 hybrid microspheres was 15% faster than that of pure TiO2 in the experiment of the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange.

Initial crystallization mechanism of isotactic polystyrene from different States.

The isothermal crystallization processes of isotactic polystyrene at 160 degrees C from different initial states (quenched glassy state and melt state), i.e., cold- and melt-crystallization processes, have been investigated by infrared (IR) and generalized two-dimensional (2D) IR correlation spectroscopy. It has been found that not only the crystallization kinetics and crystallinity but also the sequential changes of the amorphous and crystalline sensitive bands are quite different for the cold- and melt-crystallization processes. This leads to the conclusion that the physical origins for spinodal decomposition prior to polymer crystallization may be different for different crystallization processes.

Dipole-dipole plasmon interactions in gold-on-polystyrene composites.

Red-shifting of the optical absorption spectra of aggregates of gold nanoparticles by dipole-dipole interactions is of considerable interest, both for theoretical reasons and because the phenomenon can be potentially exploited in various applications. A convenient and practical way to control the effect is to assemble the aggregated ensemble of n gold nanoparticles on the outer surface of larger dielectric spheres. Here, we show by experiment and calculation how the spectra of these structures can be systematically morphed from that of isolated gold particles, through the regime of broad absorption dominated by particle-particle interactions, and finally to the limiting case of a continuous nanoshell. The experimental data were produced using the process of deposition-precipitation, which provides a facile method to decorate polystyrene microspheres with gold nanoparticles. There is no need for prior functionalization of the microsphere surface in our method of deposition-precipitation. Calculations were carried out using a code based on the discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The spectra were dominated by three effects. These were a peak absorption at about 540 nm produced by the conventional plasmon resonance of spherical gold nanoparticles, a broad absorption in the range 600-900 nm caused by diverse dipole-dipole interactions between particles, which strengthened as the number of attached gold particles increased and finally, when n was large, an absorption peak due to the onset of nanoshell-like resonances. The experimental spectra could be successfully fitted by spectra calculated using combinations of these effects.

Solvation behavior of short-chain polystyrene sulfonate in aqueous electrolyte solutions: a molecular dynamics study.

We analyze the solvation behavior of short-chain polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) in aqueous electrolyte solutions by isothermal-isochoric molecular dynamics simulation to determine the solvation effects on the structure and conformation of the polyelectrolyte as a function of the aqueous environment. To that end, we study these aqueous systems including the explicit atomistic description of water, the PSS chain, and their interactions with all species in solution. In addition, we investigate the effect of the degree of sulfonation and its distribution along the PSS chain on the resulting conformation as well as solvation structure. Moreover, we assess the impact of added salts on the net charge of the PSS backbone, placing emphasis on the valence of the counterion and the extent of the ion-pair formation between the sulfonate group and the counterions. Finally, we present evidence for the so-called like-charge attraction between sulfonate groups through the formation of counterion-mediated interchain sulfonate-sulfonate and water-mediated intrachain sulfonate-sulfonate bridges, as well as between unlike counterion-counterion interactions.

Molecular simulation of excimer fluorescence in polystyrene and poly(vinylcarbazole).

In fluorescence emission spectra of poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK), two types of excimers are observed, the fully and the partially overlapped excimers, namely, excimers and exciplexes. In this work, we investigated the structural changes induced by the transition between electronic levels S(0) and S(1). Furthermore, the widely used assumption of similar potential energy surfaces in the S(0) and S(1) states and its use in molecular dynamics simulations are thoroughly examined for PVK and polystyrene (PS). The ground-state and excited-state intermolecular potentials between phenyl or carbazyl substituents in PS or PVK, respectively, are computed from high-level ab initio calculations and fit to analytic potentials. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations are performed at room temperature for PS and for isotactic and syndiotactic PVK. This treatment enabled the decoupling of excimer and exciplex contributions from the simulated spectra.

Hydrophobicity of model surfaces with loosely packed polystyrene spheres after plasma etching.

Polystyrene (PS) sphere films with loosely packed arrays were prepared by plasma etching of closely packed PS sphere arrays. The size of PS spheres can be efficiently reduced with plasma etching, and surface topography can be manipulated by controlling the initial PS sphere size and the time of plasma exposure. These surfaces with loosely packed arrays provide a well-characterized model system for studying water repellency behavior. It was found that the surface hydrophobicity could be systematically tailored due to the well-defined and controlled surface topography. Sphere size and the interparticle distance between two adjacent spheres are critical factors in determining the water repellency behavior of the surface. A model based on the Cassie theory was proposed to elucidate the effect of surface topography on hydrophobicity, and the predicted contact angles agree well with the experimental results.

Titania-coated polystyrene hybrid microballs prepared with miniemulsion polymerization.

Hybrid microballs with polystyrene cores coated by titania nanoparticles were prepared in miniemulsion polymerization. Acrylic acid was used as a comonomer to promote locating titania nanoparticles on the polymer's surface. The addition of a hydrophobic agent effectively prevents monomer diffusing into the aqueous phase. The morphology of hybrid particles was examined with the transmission electron microscope, and its change pattern with reactive conditions was observed. The infrared spectra of hybrid nanoparticles showed that there existed a certain interaction between titania nanoparticles and polymers. The crystallization morphology of hybrid particles before and after calcination was characterized with X-ray diffraction.

Formation of spindlelike aggregates and flowerlike arrays of polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) micelles.

In this letter we describe a simple physical method for the ordered aggregation of scattered single spherical polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) micelles. First, narrow dispersed spindlelike aggregates, about 60 nm in diameter and 1.5 microm in length, are obtained from the aggregation of single spherical PS-b-PAA micelles at 0 degrees C on a glass slide. Then, the yielding spindlelike units can further aggregate into long-ranged, close-packed, flowerlike arrays after a given amount of freeze-thaw cycles. The formation of the interesting arrays is ascribed to the templated aggregation of micelles on the water polycrystal at the freezing point.

Polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) vesicle size control using solution properties and hydrophilic block length.

Polymeric vesicles have attracted considerable attention in recent years, since they are a model for biological membranes and have versatile structures with several practical applications. In this study, we prepare vesicles from polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) block copolymer in dioxane/water and dioxane/THF/water mixtures. We then examine the ability of additives (such as NaCl, HCl, or NaOH), solvent composition, and hydrophilic block length to control vesicle size. Using turbidity measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) we show that larger vesicles can be prepared from a given copolymer by adding NaCl or HCl, while adding NaOH yields smaller vesicles. The solvent composition (ratio of dioxane to THF, as well as the water content) can also determine the vesicle size. From a given copolymer, smaller vesicles can be prepared by increasing the THF content in the THF/dioxane solvent mixture. In a given solvent mixture, vesicle size increases with water content, but such an increase is most pronounced when dioxane is used as the solvent. In THF-rich solutions, on the other hand, vesicle size changes only slightly with the water concentration. As to the effect of the acrylic acid block length, the results show that block copolymers with shorter hydrophilic blocks assemble into larger vesicles. The effect of additives and solvent composition on vesicle size is related to their influence on chain repulsion and aggregation number, whereas the effect of acrylic acid block length occurs because of the relationship among the block length, the width of the molecular weight distribution, and the stabilization of the vesicle curvature.

Three-dimensional arrangements of polystyrene latex particles with a hyperbolic quadruple electrode system.

An attempt was made to arrange polystyrene latex particles (2, 5, and 10 microm in diameter) dispersed in aqueous media making use of their dielectrophoresis and electrophoresis with a hyperbolic quadruple electrode system. Application of a high-frequency ac field enabled the particles to arrange themselves between the electrodes forming a particle monolayer due to the negative dielectrophoretic force. Simultaneous application of high-frequency ac and dc fields caused the particles to gather in the region surrounded by the electrodes to form particle multilayers. Appropriate choice of the way of applying an electric field thus allowed the reversible control of particle arrangements (monolayer, multilayer, dispersion). Reapplication of an ac field to the particle layers produced highly dense particle multilayers.
