Polynuclear transition metal complexes with thiocarbohydrazide and dithiocarbamates.

Sn(tch)2{MCl2}2 was prepared from the precursor Sn(tch)2 and MCl2. It was subsequently allowed to react with diethyldithiocarbamate which yielded the trinuclear complexes of the type Sn(tch)2{M2(dtc)4}, where tch=thiocarbohydrazide, M=Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and dtc=diethyldithiocarbamate. They were characterized on the basis of microanalytical, thermal (TGA/DSC), spectral (IR, UV-vis, EPR, (1)H NMR) studies, conductivity measurement and magnetic moment data. On the basis of spectral data a tetrahedral geometry has been proposed for the halide complexes, Sn(tch)2{MCl2}2 except for Cu(II) which exhibits a square planar coordination although the transition metal ion in Sn(tch)2{M2(dtc)4} achieves an octahedral geometry where the dithiocarbamato moiety acts as a symmetrical bidentate ligand. The bidentate nature has been established by the appearance of a sharp single nu(C-S) around 1000 cm(-1). A downfield shift observed in NH(a) and NH(b) protons on moving from Sn(tch)2 to Sn(tch)2{MCl2}2 is due to the drift of electrons toward metal atoms. A two-step pyrolysis has been observed in the Sn(tch)2{MCl2}2 complexes while their dithiocarbamato derivatives exhibit a three-stage degradation pattern. Finally, the in vitro antibacterial activity of Sn(tch)2{M2(dtc)4} and the mononuclear Sn(tch)2 has been carried out on bacterial strains Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The compounds were found to be active against the test organisms. The activity of the complexes is enhanced with increasing concentration. The maximum activity in both the strains was achieved by cobalt(II) dithiocarbamate complex. Minimum activity was found for Sn(tch)2 which generally increases with the introduction of transition metal ion in the complex.

Highly sensitive detection of benzyl free radical in the vapor phase.

The 1(2)B(2)-->3(2)B(2) transition in the absorption spectrum of the benzyl free radical has been recorded in the vapor phase together with a new band at shorter wavelengths, probably the first Rydberg band of the radical in the vapor phase. The photolysis flash was of short duration and it was possible to follow the kinetics of the radicals' decay, which occurred predominantly by bimolecular recombination.

Density functional theory studies on the electronic and vibrational spectra of octaethylporphyrin diacid.

The ground-state structure and electronic and vibrational spectra of octaethylporphyrin diacid (H4OEP2+) have been studied with the density functional theory. The geometrical parameters computed with B3LYP, PBE1PBE and mPW1PW91 functionals and 6-31G* basis sets are well consistent with the experimental values. Electronic absorption spectrum of H4OEP2+ has been studied with the time-dependent DFT method, and the calculated excitation energies and oscillator strengths are compared with the experimental results. The Raman and IR spectra of H4OEP2+ and the Raman spectrum of its N-deuterated analogue (D4OEP2+) were measured. The observed Raman and IR bands have been assigned based on the frequency calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory.

Two novel C29-5beta-sterols from the stems of Opuntia dillenii.

Two novel C29-5beta-sterols, opuntisterol [(24R)-24-ethyl-5beta-cholest-9-ene-6beta,12alpha-diol] (1) and opuntisteroside [(24R)-24-ethyl-6beta-[(beta-d-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-5beta-cholest-9-ene-12alpha-ol] (2), together with nine known compounds, beta-sitosterol (3), taraxerol (4), friedelin (5), methyl linoleate (6), 7-oxositosterol (7), 6beta-hydroxystigmast-4-ene-3-one (8), daucosterol (9), methyl eucomate (10) and eucomic acid (11), were isolated from the stems of Opuntia dillenii collected in Guizhou Province, China. Their structures were elucidated mainly by spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configuration of 1 were deduced from comparative 1H NMR data of the (S)- and (R)-methoxyphenyl acetate derivatives. Compounds 6-8, 10 and 11 were isolated from O. dillenii for the first time.

Effect of sewage sludge or compost on the sorption and distribution of copper and cadmium in soil.

The application of biosolids such as sewage sludge is a concern, because of the potential release of toxic metals after decomposition of the organic matter. The effect of application of sewage sludge (Sw) and compost (C) to the soil (S) on the Cu and Cd sorption, distribution and the quality of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the soil, was investigated under controlled conditions. Visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectroscopy, sorption isotherms (simple and competitive sorption systems), and sequential extraction methods were used. The E4/E6 (lambda at 465 and 665 nm) ratio and the infrared spectra (IR) of DOM showed an aromatic behaviour in compost-soil (C-S); in contrast sewage sludge-soil (Sw-S) showed an aliphatic behaviour. Application of either Sw or C increased the Cu sorption capacity of soil. The Cd sorption decreased only in soil with a competitive metal system. The availability of Cu was low due to its occurrence in the acid soluble fraction (F3). The Cu concentration varied in accordance with the amounts of Cu added. The highest Cd concentration was found in the exchangeable fraction (F2). The Sw and C applications did not increase the Cd availability in the soil.

Tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase: a review of the roles of the heme and copper cofactors in catalysis.

L-Tryptophan, 2,3-dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.11) has been purified to homogenity from L-tryptophan induced Pseudomonas acidovorans (ATCC 11299b) and from L-tryptophan and cortisone induced rat liver. The enzyme from both sources is composed of four subunits and contains two g-atoms copper and two moles heme per mole tetramer. The proteins from the two sources are not identical. Three oxidation states of tryptophan oxygenase have been isolated: (1) fully oxidized, [Cu(II)]2[Ferriheme]2; (2) half reduced, [Cu(i)]2[ferriheme]2; and (3) fully reduced, [Cu(I)]2[ferroheme]2. Catalytic activity is dependent solely on the presence of Cu(I) in the enzyme, the heme may be either ferro or ferri. The presence of Cu(II) in the enzyme results in a requirement for an exogenous reductant, such as ascorbate, in order to elicit enzymic activity. Ligands, such as cyanide and carbon monoxide, can inhibit catalysis by binding to either or to both the copper and heme moieties. Metal complexing agents, such as bathocuproinesulfonate and bathophenanthrolinesulfonate, can inhibit catalysis by binding to Cu(I) resent only in catalytically active enzyme molecules. During catalysis by the fully reduced form of the enzyme, molecular oxygen binds to the heme moieties, while during catalysis by the half reduced form of the enzyme it does not, presumably binding instead to the Cu(I) moieties. Enzymes that catalyze similar reactions have been purified from other sources. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase appears to be a heme protein, but its copper content is unknown. Pyrrolooxygenases appear to be completely different enzymes, although they have not yet been purified to homegeneity.

Characterization of new oxovanadium(IV) complexes of saccharides.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes of the monosaccharides D- and L-arabinose, D-galactose, D-mannose, D-lyxose, D-xylose and the disaccharide maltose were obtained in aqueous solutions at pH 13. Their sodium salts were precipitated with absolute ethanol and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy (absorption and reflectance), thermo-analytical (TG and DTA) data, magnetic susceptibility measurements and IR-spectroscopy. All the complexes were found to be mononuclear, possessing the VO2+ moiety. The IR spectra were analyzed and discussed in detail allowing one to determine the characteristics of the metal-to-ligand interactions.
