In situ monitoring with Tradescantia around nuclear power plants.

Highly sensitive mutational responses of the stamen-hair system of some Tradescantia clones heterozygous for flower color (blue/pink, the blue being dominant) to low-level radiation and chemical mutagens, as demonstrated in the last decade, seem to endorse this system to be the most promising biological tester for detecting the genetic effects of mutagens at low levels. Two triploid (thus sterile) clones, KU 7 and KU 9, have been established as those suitable for in situ monitoring of environmental mutagens. In situ monitoring with such Tradescantia clones was first tried in 1974 around a nuclear power plant in Japan, then has been repeated until 1979 around more nuclear plants. About 260,000 to 1,570,000 stamen hairs were observed per year per nuclear plant (about 12-million hairs in total), and the data of pink mutation frequency were analyzed statistically. Significantly increased mutation frequencies were observed and were correlated to the operation periods of the nuclear facilities and to predominant wind direction, but not to other environmental factors. Considering physical monitoring data of radiation dose in the air, internal exposure due to incorporation and concentration of man-made radioactive nuclides seems to be of a greater importance in increasing mutation incidence.

[The genetic sequelae for plant populations of radioactive environmental pollution in connection with the Chernobyl accident].

Populations of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., and Pinus sylvestris L., growing within 30 km of Chernobyl and Bryansk region have been analyzed for the frequency of embryonic lethal mutations on Arabidopsis and frequency of chlorophyll mutations and chromosome aberrations by pine. On pine also have been analyzed rate of mutations at enzyme loci in endosperms of seeds. Dose dependence of the value genetic damage on level of radioactive pollution was observed.

Calibration of a portable tritium-in-air monitor for various radioactive gases.

A commercially available portable tritium-in-air monitor was calibrated for detecting the concentration of tritium-in-air, 14C-in-air, and various radioactive noble gases. Calibrations were performed both experimentally, using assayed quantities of the calibration gases, and theoretically, by simulating the monitor's response using Monte Carlo code. The experimental and theoretical calibrations agreed within +/- 10% for all gases tested with the exception of 41Ar-in-air where the agreement was approximately 20%. The results show that, although the monitor can be used to measure a wide range of radioactive gases, if more than one gas is present the monitor can not be used to accurately determine the concentration of, and hazard posed by, these gases. It is also shown that the monitor's ability to accurately assess tritium-in-air hazards would be seriously compromised by the presence of other radioactive gases.
