First metal azide complex with isonicotinate as a bridging ligand showing new net topology: hydrothermal synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties.

A new 3D azido-bridged coordination polymer, [Co1.5(N3)(OH)(Isonic)]n (1), has been synthesized and characterized and its magnetic properties studied. Isonicotinate acts as a bridging coligand in this complex. In 1, all of the ligands take tridentate bridging coordination modes, and the overall structure of 1 exhibits a new 3,6-connected net topology.

Borohydride, azide, and chloride anions as terminal ligands on Fe/Mo/S clusters. Synthesis, structure and characterization of [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3) MoFe3S4(X)2]2(Bu4N)4 and [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4 (PPr3)(X)]2(Bu4N)2 (X = N3-, BH4-, Cl-) double-fused cubanes. NMR reactivity studies of [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3) MoFe3S4(BH4)2]2(Bu4N)4.

Our explorations of the reactivity of Fe/Mo/S clusters of some relevance to the FeMoco nitrogenase have led to new double-fused cubane clusters with the Mo2Fe6S8 core as derivatives of the known (Cl4-cat)2Mo2Fe6S8(PPr3)6 (I) fused double cubane. The new clusters have been obtained by substitution reactions of the PPr3 ligands with Cl-, BH4-, and N3-. By careful control of the conditions of these reactions, the clusters [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4(BH4)2]2(Bu4N)4 (II), [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4(PPr3)(BH4)]2(Bu4N)2 (III), [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4(N3)2]2(Bu4N)4 (IV), [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4(PPr3)(N3)]2(Bu4N)2 (V), and [(Cl4-cat)(PPr3)MoFe3S4Cl2]2(Et4N)4 (VI) have been obtained and structurally characterized. A study of their electrochemistry shows that the reduction potentials for the derivatives of I are shifted to more positive values than those of I, suggesting a stabilization of the reduced clusters by the anionic ligands BH4- and N3-. Using 1H NMR spectroscopy, we have explored the lability of the BH4- ligand in II in coordinating solvents and its hydridic character, which is apparent in its reactivity toward proton sources such as MeOH or PhOH.

Activity-based protein profiling in vivo using a copper(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition.

Toward the goal of assigning function to the tens of thousands of protein products encoded by eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes, the field of proteomics requires new technologies that can functionally characterize proteins within the dynamic environment of the cell, where these biomolecules are subject to myriad posttranslational modifications and the actions of endogenous activators and inhibitors. Here, we report an advanced strategy for activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) that addresses this important need. We show that several enzymes can be labeled in an activity-based manner both in vitro and in vivo by an azido-sulfonate ester probe and that these labeling events can be detected in whole proteomes by copper-catalyzed ligation with a rhodamine-alkyne reagent. This click chemistry-based strategy for ABPP represents a unique and versatile method for functional proteome analysis.

A high-frequency and high-field EPR study of new azide and fluoride mononuclear Mn(III) complexes.

The isolation, structural characterization and electronic properties of three new six-coordinated Mn(III) complexes, [Mn(bpea)(F)(3)] (1), [Mn(bpea)(N(3))(3)] (2), and [Mn(terpy)(F)(3)] (3) are reported (bpea = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylamine; terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine). As for [Mn(terpy)(N(3))(3)] (4) (previously described by Limburg J.; Vrettos J. S.; Crabtree R. H.; Brudvig G. W.; de Paula J. C.; Hassan A.; Barra A-L.; Duboc-Toia C.; Collomb M-N. Inorg. Chem. 2001, 40, 1698), all these complexes exhibit a Jahn-Teller distortion of the octahedron characteristic of high-spin Mn(III) (S = 2). The analysis of the crystallographic data shows an elongation along the tetragonal axis of the octahedron for complexes 1 and 3, while complex 2 presents an unexpected compression. The electronic properties were investigated using a high-field and high-frequency EPR study performed between 5 and 15 K (190-575 GHz). The spin Hamiltonian parameters determined in solid state are in agreement with the geometry of the complexes observed in the crystal structures. A negative D value found for 1 and 3 is related to the elongated tetragonal distortion, whereas the positive D value determined for 2 is in accordance with a compressed octahedron. The high E/D values, in the range of 0.103 to 0.230 for all complexes, are correlated with the highly distorted geometry present around the Mn(III) ion. HF-EPR experiments were also performed on complex 1 in solution and show that the D value is the only spin Hamiltonian parameter which is slightly modified compared to the solid state (D = -3.67 cm(-1) in solid state; D = -3.95 cm(-1) in solution).

Unusual tethering effects in the Schmidt reaction of hydroxyalkyl azides with ketones: cation-pi and steric stabilization of a pseudoaxial phenyl group.

The Lewis acid-promoted reactions of chiral 2-aryl-3-azido-1-propanols with 4-substituted cyclohexanones lead to iminium ethers and ultimately caprolactams (following a hydrolysis step). In this study, it is shown that these reactions afford variable ratios of products, depending on the electronic nature of the phenyl group. These results are interpreted in the context of a cation-pi stabilizing effect in the product-determining reaction intermediate. Remarkably, the best selectivity was obtained when an azidopropanol reagent containing a quaternary center was used; a control experiment showed that the high selectivity observed in this result depended upon the free rotation of the pseudoaxial aromatic group in the intermediate that affords the major product.
