[AAS method for determination of manganese in fluorspar].

An AAS method for the determination of manganese in fluorspar was established for the inspection of export product. The fluorspar sample was treated with HF, then fumed with HClO4. After cooling, the residue was dissolved by adding HCl and boric acid with gentle heating. The series of standards for calibration were prepared by adding the same amount of Ca for matrix matching. The linear range of the determination of manganese is 0.09-2.5 microg x mL(-1). The determination limit of the method for Mn in fluorspar was 0.001 0%. Analytical results of real samples with various levels of content by the proposed method were in good agreement with those by the ISO method of spectrophotometry. The method features good precision, easy operation, and convenience for application.

[Preparation and photocatalytic activity of boron doped CeO2/TiO2 mixed oxides].

Boron doped CeO2/TiO2 mixed oxides photocatalysts were prepared by adding boric acid and cerous nitrate during the hydrolyzation of titanium trichloride and tetrabutyl titanate. XRD, UV-Vis DRS and XPS techniques were used to characterize the crystalline structure, light absorbing ability and the chemical state of Boron element in the photocatalyst sample. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by monitoring the degradation of acid red B under UV irradiation. These results indicate that the wavelengths at adsorbing edge are affected by the content of cerous nitrate and the maximum absorption wavelength is about 481 nm when the mole ratio of Ce/Ti is 1.0. For higher dosage of Cerium, the absorbance edge shifts to blue slightly. The prepared photocatalyst is composed of anatase TiO2 and cubic CeO2 when calcined at 500 degrees C. An increase in the calcination temperature transforms the crystalline structure of the titanium oxides from anatase to rutile, and has no obvious influence on crystalline structure of CeO2 but crystallites growth up. The absorbance edge decreases drastically with the increase of calcination temperature. With a view to the stability of photocatalyst and utilization of sun energy, 500 degrees C of calcination temperature is recommended. The XP spectrum for B1s exhibits that only a few boron ions dope into titania and ceria matrix, others exist in B2O3. The photocatalytic activity increases with increase of cerous nitrate dosage, and decreases drastically due to higher dosage (the mol ratio of Ce/Ti > 0.5). After 10 min UV irradiation, 96% of acid red B is degraded completely over photocatalyst under optimum reaction condition.

An improved two dimensional thin-layer chromatography system for the separation of phosphatidylglycerol and its derivatives.

A two dimensional thin-layer chromatography system has been devised for the improved separations of phosphatidylglycerol and its derivaties, cardiolipin and bis/monoacylglyceryl)phosphate, from the other phospholipid components of tissue total lipid extracts. The system employs silica gel G plates prepared with 0.4 M boric acid. Linear recovery of added phosphatidylglycerol was found, and phosphatidylglycerol did not cochromatograph with N, N-dimethylphosphatidylethanolamine in this system. The phospholipid class composition of various rat tissues and a Morris 7777 hepatoma has been determined and compared with values from the literature.

Stimulation of Ca2+ uptake by cyclic AMP and protein kinase in sarcoplasmic reticulum-rich and sarcolemma-rich microsomal fractions from rabbit heart.

The effect of cyclic AMP on Ca2+ uptake by rabbit heart microsomal vesicular fractions representing mainly fragments of either sarcoplasmic reticulum or sarcolemma was investigated in the presence and absence of soluble cardiac protein kinase and with microsomes prephosphorylated by cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase. The acceleration of oxalate-promoted Ca2+ uptake by fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum following cyclic AMP-dependent membrane protein phosphorylation, observed by other authors, was confirmed. In addition it was found that the acceleration was greatest at pH 7.2 and almost negligible at pH 6.0 and pH 7.8. A very marked increase in Ca2+ uptake by cyclic AMP-dependent membrane protein phosphorylation was observed in the presence of boric acid, a reversible inhibitor of Ca2+ uptake. In addition to the microsomal fraction thought to represent mainly fragments of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, the effect of protein kinase and cyclic AMP on Ca2+ uptake was investigated in a cardiac sarcolemma-enriched membrane fraction. Ca2+ uptake by sarcolemmal vesicles, unlike Ca2+ uptake by sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles, was inhibited by low doses of digitoxin. The acceleration of oxalate-promoted Ca2+ uptake by cyclic AMP and soluble cardiac protein kinase, however, was quite similar to what was seen in preparations of fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum, which suggests that it may reflect an acceleration of active Ca2+ transport across the myocardial cell surface membrane.

[The depth distribution of neutron-capture events in 10B nuclei during the irradiation of a water phantom with neutrons from the channels of the BR-10 reactor].

The authors present the results of experimental investigations of distribution of capture events on nuclei 10B by the depth of a water phantom during its irradiation with beams T-4 and B-3 of the BR-10 reactor. A ferrous sulfate dosimeter with added boric acid was used as a detector of such events. The depth of a water phantom on which the effect of boron capture by a neutron beam is decreased 2-fold, is 1.7 cm. For the B-3 beam a curve of depth correlation of neutron capture events had a broad maximum at a depth of 4-5 cm.

["Otinum" in the therapy of middle ear diseases].

Otinum, a new drug made in Poland, was used to treat inflammatory diseases of the middle ear of 40 patients. The drug was applied topically as drops or tampons inserted into the external acoustic meatus. As controls, 16 patients with identical problems, who were treated with 3% boric acid alcohol, were used. Otinum had a distinct pain-killing and anti-inflammatory effect, as well as a mild keratolytic effect. Otinum is recommended to be used for acute otitis media and exacerbated chronic otitis media in the absence of pathogenic microorganisms.

Torulopsis glabrata vaginitis: clinical aspects and susceptibility to antifungal agents.

Torulopsis glabrata is second only to Candida albicans in frequency of isolation from the vagina in both asymptomatic women and patients with yeast vaginitis. We retrospectively studied 33 patients from whom vaginal isolates of T glabrata were obtained. Torulopsis glabrata caused symptomatic vaginitis in 42% of the patients but was unassociated with symptoms in 30%; in 27% of patients, its importance was uncertain because of concomitant pathology. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed on 39 T glabrata strains isolated from 39 patients. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the majority of T glabrata isolates fell within the sensitive range of the antimycotic drugs tested; however, no correlation was found between in vitro antifungal MICs and the response to azole drug therapy. Clinical success was achieved in 67% of the patients although mycologic cure occurred in only 33%. A small number of patients developed recurrent and often chronic Torulopsis vaginitis unresponsive to conventional therapy. Limited experience suggests that vaginal boric acid therapy may be of value in these recalcitrant cases.

[Effects of helium-neon laser energy on the tissues of the middle ear in the presence of biological fluids and drug solutions].

By means of biophotometry the coefficients of absorption and penetration depth of helium-neon laser radiation with a wavelength of 632.8 nm were measured. Measurements were made in the inflammatory mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity, mucous membrane of the tympanic-cavity infiltrated with the saline solution, cortical bone of the mastoid, cartilage of the auricle, blood, serum, exudate, 0.02% furacillin, 3% boric acid, 0.9% and 10% NaCl. These observations were used to develop an efficient method of laser therapy of the inflammatory and wound surface of the middle ear biological tissue, which formed the basis of a new procedure of the laser treatment of "closed" cavities of the middle ear in an early postoperative period after debridement or hearing repair surgery of suppurative otitis media which were filled with a transparent antiseptic solution.

[An evaluation of the sensitivity to antiseptic preparations of clinical strains of microorganisms in the family Enterobacteriaceae].

Classical enterobacterial strains are sensitive to the working concentrations of pervomur, dioxydine, resorcinol, sodium sulfacyl, iodopyrone, chlorhexidine and boric acid, resistant to the action of cetyplyridinium chloride, rivanol, roccal and ethonium. In enterobacterial populations strains with acquired resistance to chloramine B, iodopyrone, chlorhexidine and resorcinol are present. Hospital strains of enterobacteria are characterized by higher, in comparison with extrahospital strains, resistance to ethonium, sodium sulfacyl, lodopyrone, chloramine B and resorcinol.

In vitro determination of uptake, retention, distribution, biological efficacy, and toxicity of boronated compounds for neutron capture therapy: a comparison of porphyrins with sulfhydryl boron hydrides.

A major problem remaining in the evaluation of boronated compounds for neutron capture therapy (NCT) is the need to know the intra- or extracellular microdistribution of boron. This is a consequence of the short range of the 10B(n,alpha)7Li reaction products (approximately 10 microns), such that biological efficacy is dependent upon intracellular distribution. In particular, if boron location is predominantly extracellular, a significant reduction in efficacy would be expected. The in vitro procedure described here was developed mainly to provide information regarding the intra- and extracellular location and concentration of boron. However, use of the technique also allows the measurement of compound uptake and retention (binding) and the determination of biological efficacy by the evaluation of survival curves obtained following irradiation with thermal neutrons. Comparison is made to results obtained with boric acid (H3(10)BO3) and to results calculated for various boron distributions. Concomitantly, an indication of compound toxicity can be obtained from the plating efficiency of unirradiated control cells. Currently, most investigators utilize in vivo systems for testing and evaluating boron uptake from various carrier molecules. Given the large number of boron compounds being synthesized and needing evaluation as to their usefulness for NCT, the in vitro technique described here is simple and advantageous for initial compound screening. In addition to sparing animal lives, it is both time and cost effective and utilizes much smaller quantities of test compound than are required for an in vivo assay. A boronated porphyrin (BOPP) evaluated by the above procedure shows an uptake and retention approximately 20 times that of sulfhydryl boron hydride monomer (BSH); the latter compound is currently being used clinically for NCT in Japan and is anticipated for use in clinical trials in the United States. If the advantages demonstrated by BOPP in these in vitro studies are validated in animal experiments, BOPP should be considered for clinical application.

[Antibacterial chemotherapy in anaerobic osteomyelitis caused by gunshot wounds].

Thirty three patients with a 7-year history of chronic gunshot osteomyelitis were examined. Non-sporogenic anaerobes were isolated from 28 patients. Gram-positive cocci and gram-negative rods predominated in the anaerobic microflora. Radical surgical interventions combined with adequate antibacterial chemotherapy yielded satisfactory results. The postoperative cavities were drained to provide aerobic conditions in all the parts. Antibacterial drugs and in particular dioxidine solutions and KF were used locally. When antibioticograms were available 7 to 10 days after, the antibiotics in combination with enzymes such as terrylitin and lidase were used with constant irrigation of wounds with furacillin or boric acid solutions. In the empirical therapy, the following scheme was most frequently used: 600 mg of lincomycin, thrice, intramuscularly; 80 mg of gentamicin, thrice, intramuscularly and as an obligatory agent 500 mg of trichopol, thrice, orally. After availability of the antibioticograms the use of the antibiotics was adjusted and continued up to 10 to 12 days. In severe cases 0.1% solution of dioxidine was used intravenously drop-wise in a dose of 300 mg 2 times a day as well as tiberal or clindamycin, intravenously, drop-wise. The antibacterial drugs were added to the drainage until the latter was removed. Relapses of the disease over 4 years were observed only in 3 out of 26 operated patients.

[Localization of antigenic determinants on a molecule of trophoblast-specific beta 1-glycoprotein].

Spatial localization of antigenic determinants of trophoblast-specific beta I-glycoprotein (TSG) has been elucidated using chemical modifications of the sugar and protein moieties of the molecule. Various deglycosylation procedures of TSG afforded fragments slightly soluble even in the presence of powerful detergents. Treatment of TSG with boric acid and its salts, accompanied with a conformational change of the sugar moiety, failed to alter conformation of the protein portion as evidenced by CD spectral data. This modification was found to increase the antigenic activity of TSG only scarcely. Modification of tryptophane or tyrosine residues of TSG changed spatial structure of the protein portion to can be a considerable loss of the TSG antigenic activity. The data obtained led to the conclusion that antigenic determinants of TSG are localized at the protein portion of the molecule and are topographic. A tryptophane residue is an indispensable constituent of the antigenic determinants.

[Antiseptic sensitivity of clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

MICs, the frequency of clinical and statistic resistance and the antiseptic activity index were studied in complex on out-of-hospital and hospital ecovars of P. aeruginosa. The forms resistant to a number of antiseptics, i.e. chloramine B, chlorhexidine, decamethoxine and dioxidine whose frequency eventually increased were shown to be widely distributed. The antiseptic sensitivity spectrum was more narrow and more heterogeneous than that of other bacteria, the heterogeneity level being dependent on the antiseptic type and bacterial ecovar. The activity of pervomur, phenol, resorcin and boric acid was higher against the clinical strains of P. aeruginosa while iodopyrin, sulfacetamide sodium and dioxidine were less active. The P. aeruginosa strains had natural resistance to cetylpyridinium chloride, rokkal, ethonium, sodium laurate and laurylsulfate and rivanol. It was recommended to assay antiseptic sensitivity of agents causing purulent inflammatory infections and to control circulation of antiseptic resistant variants of bacteria in hospitals.

[Studies on method for electrophoresis of creatine kinase (CK) MB sub-bands and its clinical application].

We studied a electrophoretic method for creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) MB sub-bands using a discontinuous buffer system on cellulose acetate membrane. The sub-bands (CK-MB1 and MB2) were clearly separated using a discontinuous buffer consisting of 0.22 mol/1 tris aminomethane-glycine buffer on the anode side and 0.033 mol/l sodium barbital-boric acid buffer on the cathode side at 250 V for 30 minutes. We also examined CK-MB sub-bands in myocardial extracts that showed only a broad MB2. When the extract was incubated with normal serum havings low CK activity at 37 degrees C at MB 1 sub-band appeared within a few hours. We examined the serial changes in these sub-bands in the serum of eight patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The MB2 reached a peak 7-25 hours after onset of chest pain, and MB 1 reached a peak 0-12 hours later. The ratio of MB 2 to MB 1 was high at early phase of AMI. (about 7 hours after onset of chest pain, mean 1.7 S.D. 0.78) These results indicate that a high MB 2/MB 1 ratio is a more sensitive indicator of enzyme release from necrotic myocardium, and is useful for early diagnosis of AMI.

Resistotyping as a new epidemiological marker for Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Resistogram typing was established with the help of 30 randomly chosen clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae using sodium arsenate, malachite green, boric acid, potassium tellurite, mercuric chloride, antimony potassium tartarate and sodium arsenite. The resistance to these chemicals was designated as A, B, C, D, E, F and G respectively. The technique was then applied to 152 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae. A total of 35 patterns were obtained. Common patterns were ABEFG and ABFG. There was no clustering of the strains in any of the resistogram patterns as even the commonest pattern had only 10.5 per cent of the strains. When combined with klebocin typing, it provided better discrimination of strains as strains belonging to seven klebocin types could be subdivided into 68 resistogram patterns. The reverse was also possible, i.e., the strains belonging to seven resistogram patterns could be subdivided into 38 klebocin types. The former procedure thus offered better discrimination of the strains.

[Percutaneous resorption of cesium-137 and strontium-89 in alkali solutions and inactivation of the burned surface].

Experiments on white rats studied percutaneous resorption of 137Cs and 89Sr during their skin application in the form of 10 per cent and 40 per cent solutions of NaOH. The study also involved deactivation of the contaminated skin by means of traditional means of first aid recommended for alkali burn and the application of 5 per cent solution of boric acid with the addition of some detergent or 10 per cent solution of sodium hexametaphosphate. The dependence of deactivation efficacy on the time of beginning sanitary treatment, decontamination procedure and alkali concentration was established.

Acute, fatal illness in cattle exposed to boron fertilizer.

Twenty-six cows died after accidental exposure to boron fertilizer. Cows developed diarrhea, weakness, ataxia, signs of depression, and died, usually within a few hours. Seizure-like behavior was noticed in 2 cows, and 2 were suspected of aborting. High boron concentrations in tissues from affected cows confirmed ingestion of an appreciable amount of boron fertilizer. In an attempt to confirm the diagnosis of boron poisoning, boron fertilizer was administered to goats. A kid goat given 3.6 g of fertilizer/kg of body weight developed clinical signs similar to those seen in the cattle. Boron compounds such as sodium borate and boric acid have been considered generally nontoxic, and reports of livestock toxicosis are uncommon. This case report suggests that these compounds may be palatable under certain circumstances leading to ingestion of toxic quantities.

Evaluation of the measurement of blood glucose levels on dried filter paper blood spots.

The measurement of blood glucose using discs punched from dried spots on filter paper has been examined as a method to monitor patients' home blood glucose results. We confirm that the method is precise, reproducible, and accurate, but show that impregnation of the filter paper with boric acid leads to an initial false elevation in measured glucose levels and does not improve stability of the sample more than does refrigeration. Degradation of blood glucose is insignificant over 28 days if samples are stored at -20 degrees C, and samples kept at 4 degrees C show minimal falls provided they are analysed within 7 days. The greatest breakdown of glucose was shown to occur during the first 48 hours after application. The filter paper glucose measurements correlated closely with parallel measurements using a Yellow Springs Glucose Analyser.
