[The character of functional connections in the endocrine system of female white rats and their transformation with age].

The authors studied the functional interrelations between the adrenal glands and the thyroid gland of female albino rats of various age groups. Blood content of 11-oxycorticosteroids and protein-bound iodine was determined. Analogous determinations were carried out in partial exclusion of the adrenal gland function (metapyron block) and of the thyroid gland function (6-methyluracil block). It is supposed that in the young sexually-mature female albino rats the functions of the adrenal glands and the thyroid gland were in direct relationship irrespective of the cyclic variations in the sex steroid secretion; with the advance of age this association became deranged.

The effect of neurohormones on the brain and the endocrine system.

The review article summarizes the results obtained in the author's laboratory during the last few years concerning the action of number of neurohormones such as ACTH, vasopressin, oxytocin, TRH and TRH analogues, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) LH-RH, gastrin and gastrin C-terminal fragments and cholecystokinin octapeptide on certain behavioural reactions and brain transmitters. The results obtained suggests that in some of the behavioural reactions elicited by these peptide hormones are brought about by modulatory action of these peptide on brain transmitters. These neurohormones, including gastrointestinal peptide hormones have a time dependent, locus and transmitter specific action on the brain function.

Effect of thyroid hormones from maternal milk on some measures of body growth and endocrine system in newborn sucklings.

The effect of thyroidectomy (TX) in lactating mother on the development of sucklings was studied during first 15 days of life. TX resulted in a decrease of thyroxine (T4) level in maternal milk which further resulted in a decrease of the level of T4, insulin and glucose in serum of newborns, and a decrease of body weight and of the glycogen content in liver. It is suggested that the hypoglycemia, decrease of liver glycogen and retardation of body growth under such conditions result from the inhibition of glucogenesis due to a deficiency of T4 and presumably also of GH in sucklings. These investigations showed that changes of glucose and glycogen in newborns during the early postnatal period together with some other measures of the development may be used in the evaluation of their adaptation capability.
