HIV-1: maternal prognosis.

Profound modifications in the profile of patients are currently being observed within the epidemic context of AIDS, especially with respect to pauperization and feminization of the disease. The population most frequently affected is in the reproductive age, and among adults aged 18 to 24 years, the ratio is 1 man to 1 woman, a phenomenon occurring uniformly all over the world. One of the main challenges for HIV-1-infected pregnant women and their doctors is the effect of the interaction between HIV infection and pregnancy. The present article is a review of the literature; and its objective is to assess the influence of HIV-1 infection seen from the maternal perspective, with a discussion of immunologic function, maternal prognosis, and the HIV-abortion interface. At present, we cannot conclude that pregnancy has a short-term effect on the evolution of HIV infection, but the concomitance of HIV and pregnancy may adversely affect the prognosis of gestation, especially in view of its frequent association with increased abortion and puerperal morbidity rates.

Candida chorioamnionitis and intra-uterine contraceptive device.

In spite of the very common occurrence of vaginal candidiasis in pregnant women (1), the uterus is seldom affected. There are few reports in the literature of intrauterine infection. The present paper presents a case of placental and fetal candidiasis in association with the presence of an intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUD).

Bluetongue virus: (1) in pregnant white-tailed deer (2) a plaque reduction neutralization test.

Six white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were infected with bluetongue virus (BTs, vaccinal strain) approximately one-third of the way through their gestation period. One deer died of bluetongue 21 days after inoculation. Of the five surviving the infection, one had two mummified fetuses, and the others no fetuses upon euthanasia two weeks after term. Fetuses were present in two control deer and in the one which died of bluetongue. A plaque reduction neutralization test for bluetongue virus was developed and described for the first time and its sensitivity illustrated by high post inoculation titers which ranged from 1:3200 to greater than 1:16000.

[Epidemiology of rubella during 1971-1975. Comparison with abortus cases and malformed newborn in Lombardia (Italy) (author's transl)].

Details regarding claims of rubella occurred in Lombardia (Italy) have been collected by the AA., in force at the Regional Health Services. The results have been also compared with the claimed cases of abortus and of malformed newborn. The first results of voluntary vaccination, promoted by the Regional Services, both on children of the 5th Classes of Primary School and on women more exposed to risks provoked by rubella infections are also reported.

[Vagina ecosystem with taking into consideration bacterial vaginosis in particular at pregnant women to be in miscarriage and premature delivery danger].

The main tests of this writing was defining pregnant vagina ecosystem at hospitalized Clinic patients between 5th and 37th pregnant week. Patients was divided on two group: I-st with miscarriage danger, II-nd with premature delivery danger. Bacterial Vaginosis was recognized based into consideration Amsela criterion at 13.4% of examined patients, BV with mycosis coexisted at 3.8%, mycosis infection at 42.2% and trichomoniasis at 4.6% pregnant women. Influence occurred infection of Bacterial Vaginosis on premature delivery coming was also examined. Patients attended towards BV during the pregnant time, which gave preterm birth--21 (47.7%) compared with patients proper vagina ecosystem which also gave preterm labour premature--49 (36.6%). No radical, statistic comparison between those two groups was noticed.

[Appendicitis as a pregnancy complication].

The special problem of appendicitis in the gestationperiod and its management according to the 7 principles recommended by Möbius has been discussed. From 1960 to June 1974 in the gynaecological hospital of Jena University appendectomy must be performed in 44 pregnant women and in 2 cases after delivery. In relation to 32849 deliveries at the same period there was an incidence of 0,14 per cent. Out of them 8 appendectomies were necessary in connection with ectopic pregnancies and in 5 cases with interrupting the gestation. Of 32 pregnant women one had an abortion and in 8 cases with simultaneous cesarean section two infants died. There were no maternal deaths.

HIV/AIDS surveillance in Japan, 1984-2000.

The HIV/AIDS surveillance system in Japan, which began collecting data on the number of AIDS patients in 1984 and the number of HIV-infected persons in 1987, has played an important role in monitoring the trend and magnitude of Japan's HIV/AIDS epidemic and its distribution across various population subgroups. However, the system lacks any personal identifiers, making it impossible to eliminate duplication or to track cases for disease progression. It also does not permit the identification of the residence of HIV-infected persons because the residence of only the reporting physician is documented under the New Infectious Diseases Control Law, effective since April 1, 1999. The number of people with HIV/AIDS in Japan continues to grow. Among youth, sexually transmitted diseases, induced abortion, and sexual activities have shown a marked increase since the mid-1990s. Behavioral risk of infection for both injection drug users (IDUs) and men who have sex with men (MSM) remains alarmingly high. Accurate monitoring of infection rates is critical to the planning and evaluation of treatment, care and prevention programs. Japan should restructure its HIV/AIDS surveillance system to more accurately monitor the HIV/AIDS epidemic and related risk behaviors.

Abortion induced by cell-associated pseudorabies virus in vaccinated sows.

Pregnant sows, immune against pseudorabies after vaccination, were inoculated at 70 days of gestation either with autologous blood mononuclear cells that had been infected in vitro with pseudorabies virus (PRV) or with cell-free PRV. The infected cells or cell-free PRV were inoculated surgically into the arteria uterina. Eight sows (A to H) had been vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine. The titer of seroneutralizing antibodies in their serum varied between 12 and 48. Five sows (A to E) were inoculated with autologous mononuclear cells, infected either with a Belgian PRV field strain or with the Northern Ireland PRV strain NIA3. These 5 sows aborted their fetuses: 2 of them (B and C) 3 days after inoculation, and the other 3 (A, D, and E) 10, 11, and 12 days after inoculation, respectively. Sows F, G, and H were inoculated with a cell-free PRV field strain. They farrowed healthy litters after normal gestation. Neutralizing antibodies were absent against PRV in the sera of the newborn pigs, which were obtained prior to the uptake of colostrum. The 23 fetuses that were aborted in sows B and C 3 days after the inoculation were homogeneous in appearance and size. Foci of necrosis were not detected in the liver. Viral antigens were located by immunofluorescence in individual cells in lungs, liver, and spleen of 15 fetuses. Virus was isolated from the liver, lungs, or body fluids of 12 fetuses. The 39 fetuses that were aborted in sows A, D, and E between 10 and 12 days after inoculation were of 2 types: 17 were mummified and 22 were normal-appearing.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Endometrial Chlamydia infection in women with habitual abortion].

Endometrial, endocervical, and urethral specimens were obtained from 16 nonpregnant women with a history of habitual abortions. Chlamydia were isolated from the endometria of 4 women, but only in one case chlamydial intracytoplasmic incorporations in endometrial cells were detectable by the Romanovsky Giemza staining. Endometrial Chlamydia infection was diagnosed in 5 of the 16 patients. No Chlamydia were isolated from the cervix uteri or urethra of 2 patients with endometrial involvement. The study has demonstrated that eradication of intrauterine chlamydial infection before pregnancy improves the efficacy of treatment of habitual abortions. It is possible that asymptomatic chlamydial endometrial infection is injurious for the placenta.
