Macrophage infiltration and angiogenesis in endometrial cancer.

The aim of this study was to determine whether tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) infiltration correlates with clinicopathological factors including microvessel, counts and clinical outcome in endometrial cancer. Overall 56 out of the 109 endometrial cancers (51.4%) expressed distinct tumor-associated macrophages infiltration in their tumor stroma. Tumor-associated macrophages infiltration was significantly high in tumors with deep myometrial invasion, high grade and elderly patients. Microvessel counts strongly correlated with tumor-associated macrophages infiltration in tumor stroma (p = 0.0002). However, tumor-associated macrophages infiltration was not a prognostic factor. In conclusion, tumor-associated macrophages may play a crucial role in the promotion of angiogenesis, but can not be used to prodict prognosis of patients with endometrial cancer.

Laparoscopically assisted vaginal management of deep endometriosis infiltrating the rectovaginal septum.

BACKGROUND: Two aims: 1) To assess the results of laparoscopically assisted vaginal management of deep endometriosis infiltrating the rectovaginal septum (RVS); 2) to pinpoint the differences between this procedure and that used for deep endometriotic lesions located on the uterosacral ligaments (USL). METHODS: Descriptive retrospective study. Twenty-nine consecutive patients operated for deep endometriosis infiltrating the RVS were included in this series. RESULTS: One patient only (3.5%) presented a major complication of the recto-vaginal fistula type. After a one step reoperation under anesthesia, the post operative history was uncomplicated and no sequelae are to be deplored. With respect to dysmenorrhea (DM), deep dyspareunia (DP) and chronic pelvic pain (CPP), there was an improvement in respectively 91.7% (22 patients), 100% (24 patients) and 92.9% (13 patients) of cases. For each of these 3 symptoms the median score according to the visual analog scale was significantly lower after the operation (for DM: 7.6+/-2.0 versus 1.7+/-2.6; for DP 7.5+/-1.9 versus 0.5+/-1.1; for CPP 5.9+/-2.8 versus 1.4+/-3.2) (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that provided the surgeon is highly skilled in laparoscopy, operative laparoscopy is efficient for the treatment of patients presenting painful symptoms related to deep endometriotic infiltrating the RVS. From the technical point of view the rectum must be freed, leaving the deep endometriotic nodule attached to the posterior wall of the vagina. Resection of the whole lesion requires the posterior wall of the vagina to be resected, whereas ureterolysis is often unnecessary. So for lesions located on the RVS the vagina is opened systematically, unlike the situation when resecting deep endometriotic lesions infiltrating the USL. Deep pelvic endometriosis is not synonymous with endometriosis of the RVS. Lesions truly infiltrating the RVS represent only a small proportion of all deep endometriosis lesions.

The purification performance of infiltration basins fitted with pretreatment facilities: a case study.

In the south-east of France, the evacuation of stormwater by infiltration into the ground is being developed for large aquifer systems such as the ground water in the Rhône valley and in the eastern part of Lyons. A study proposal has been presented to the water management department of the conurbation of Lyons, aimed at quantifying, within a reasonably short space of time, the effects, in terms of transport of pollutants, of the stormwater infiltration system in the underground water in eastern Lyons. To this end, a one year duration experiment was carried out on the Vénissieux infiltration basin which drains stormwater from a 380 hectares industrial catchment area. Its peculiar configuration also made it possible to acquire new knowledge on the qualitative operation of a few pretreatment facilities. After describing the operation of the basin and the experimental protocol, we shall present a body of data that we monitored and our conclusions about the behaviour of the pollution throughout the facilities. Then, we present methods used to assess the pollution removal performance of the infiltration basin and its pretreatment devices, the results obtained, and our conclusions about the impact of the infiltration basin on groundwater and soil.

Disinfection of secondary effluents by infiltration percolation.

Among the most attractive applications of reclaimed wastewater are: irrigation of public parks, sports fields, golf courses and market gardening. These uses require advanced wastewater treatment including disinfection. According to WHO guidelines (1989) and current rules and regulations in Tunisia, faecal coliform levels have to be reduced to < 10(3) or 10(2) CFU/100 mL. In Tunisia, most wastewater plants are only secondary treatment and, in order to meet health related regulations, the effluents need to be disinfected. However, it is usual for secondary effluents to need filtration prior to disinfection. Effectiveness of conventional disinfection processes, such as chlorination and UV radiation, are dependent upon the oxidation level and the levels of suspended solids of the treated water. Ozonation is relatively expensive and energy consuming. The consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of conventional techniques, their reliability, investment needs and operational costs will lead to the use of less sophisticated alternative techniques for certain facilities. Among alternative techniques, soil aquifer treatment and infiltration percolation through sand beds have been studied in Arizona, Israel, France, Spain and Morocco. Infiltration percolation plants have been intermittently fed with secondary or high quality primary effluents which percolated through 1.5-2 m unsaturated coarse sand and were recovered by under-drains. In such infiltration percolation facilities, microorganisms were eliminated through numerous physical, physicochemical and biological inter-related processes (mechanical filtration, adsorption and microbial degradation respectively). Efficiency of faecal coliform removal was dependent upon the water detention times in the filtering medium and on the oxidation of the filtered water. Effluents of Sfax town aerated ponds were infiltrated through 1.5 m deep sand columns in order to determine the performance of infiltration percolation in the polishing of secondary effluents. Elimination of bacteria (total and coliforms, faecal streptococci) and their relationship with the hydraulic load and the temperature were investigated.

[Tree stomatal infiltration and SO2 injury and protection effect of ABA].

This paper deals with relation between tree stomatal infiltration and SO2 injury and the protection effect of ABA. Experiments of SO2 smoking to the selected trees were carried out and the data were collected in the field. The results show that stomatal infiltration was a comparably constant index for certain tree species. The infiltration of trees is negatively correlated with the combine extent of chlorophy, but not obviously. The index is also positively correlated with K+ efflux in leaf(r = 0.92, alpha < 0.01). In the experiment of SO2 smoking, the effect on infiltration of same species under different SO2 concentration was little, less than one grade, while K+ efflux increased with the increment of SO2 amount absorbed by the leaves. When the leaves were sprayed with ABA solution, the higher the ABA solution concentration was, the lower the K+ efflux was. When leaves sprayed with ABA solution were smoked with 2.5 mol.L-1 for four hours, the infiltration of leaves with 30 mol.L-1 ABA solution dropped 1.5-3 and K+ concentration decreased 36.5%-54.8% on leaves. It indicates that the ABA solution on leaves has remarkable effect of protection of SO2 injury.

Infiltration and inflow in combined sewer systems: long-term analysis.

A study was conducted on 34 German combined sewer systems including combined sewer overflow (CSO) tanks and treatment plant to show up actual hidden reserves and bottlenecks in stormwater treatment. The study gave also a general insight into the water pathways in urban hydrology. A special focus was given to undesired non-polluted water infiltrating into the sewer, labelled infiltration and inflow (I/I) or infiltration inflows, which is widely underestimated. It leads to a bad performance of the drainage system although the parasite waters are themselves non-polluted. In existing combined systems, pollution control can be considerably improved by reducing I/I. It is equivalent to the reduction of surface runoff e.g. by a separate drainage as frequently proposed alternative. Artificial infiltration of surface runoff may even increase infiltration inflows.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face: case report and literature review.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face comprises a subgroup of lipomatous tumors. While rare, it remains a definite clinical entity. Its etiology is unknown. The tumor is congenital in origin and occurs in infancy or early childhood. It is poorly enveloped and characterized by diffuse infiltration of mature adipose tissue over normal muscle fibers, rapid growth, associated osseous hyperplasia, and a high recurrence rate after surgical intervention. Due to its diffuse infiltration and involvement of important facial structures, complete surgical excision is often impossible. A total of 14 cases of congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face was found in a literature review. Herein we present an additional case who had both diffuse infiltrating lipomatosis and a well-encapsulated lipoma on her left cheek.

The role of immune cells infiltrating the kidney in the pathogenesis of salt-sensitive hypertension.

This work summarizes recent evidence that suggests that renal infiltration with immune cells plays a role in the pathogenesis of salt-sensitive hypertension. The presence of immunocompetent cells is a conspicuous finding in conditions associated with hypertension induced or maintained by a high salt intake. Studies in models of salt-sensitive hypertension following angiotensin II infusion and nitric oxide synthesis inhibition indicate that a reduction in the tubulointerstitial infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages during the induction period results in protection from the subsequent development of salt-sensitive hypertension. Reduction of the renal immune infiltrate in spontaneously hypertensive rats results in near normalization of the blood pressure. The reduction in the immune infiltrate is associated with a reduction in the number of cells expressing angiotensin II (some of which are immune cells) and a reduction in renal oxidative stress. Since increased intrarenal angiotensin activity tends to reduce filtered sodium and increase sodium reabsorption, and the tubulointerstitial damage resulting from oxidative stress can induce a shift to the right in the pressure-natriuresis relationship, these findings suggest potential mechanisms by which the immune infiltrate could induce or worsen salt-driven hypertension.

[Lymphocytic infiltration in human gliomas].

A histological study of lymphocytic infiltration has been undertaken following removal at operation of one hundred human gliomas. This study has been completed with eight cases of tumour recurrence, six attempted autologous grafts, twenty one post-mortems and fourteen explorations of delayed hypersensitivity reactions. About half of the glioma specimens showed lymphocytic infiltration and no reaction was present in the other. Within this series of glioblastomas a correlation existed between the presence of infiltrating lymphocytes and the duration both of pre and post operative tumour evolution. The rejection of autologous grafts seemed to depend directly on the presence of lymphocytic infiltrations associated with the primary tumour. The retarded hypersensitivity reactions obtained after intradermic inoculations of cellular lyophilizates did not seem to be directly related either to the phenomenon of autologous graft rejection or to the presence of lymphocytic infiltrations. The results suggest that there is a complex system represented by two antigenic groups of transplantation type and sensitization type.

Postoperative analgesic effects of intravenous lornoxicam and morphine with pre-emtive ropivacaine skin infiltration and preperitoneal instillation after transabdominal hysterectomy.

UNLABELLED: To investigate the effectiveness of intravenous lornoxicam and morphine with the preemptive effects of ropivacaine local skin infiltration and peritoneal instillation in reducing postoperative pain after transabdominal hysterectomy, a randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled study was done in 88 patients undergoing transabdominal hysterectomy under general anesthesia. The patients were allocated into 4 groups to receive: (group A) only intravenous morphine 10 mg; (group B) intravenous morphine 10 mg and lornoxicam 16 mg; (group C) intravenous morphine 10 mg, lornoxicam 16 mg with 0.5 per cent ropivacaine local skin infiltration before skin incision and 1 per cent ropivacaine instillation before peritoneal incision; (group D) intravenous morphine 10 mg, lornoxicam 16 mg with 1 per cent ropivacaine instillation after peritoneal closure and 0.5 per cent ropivacaine local skin infiltration before skin closure. Pain was assessed by patients using visual analog scales (VAS) at 2, 6, 12, 18, 24, 48 hours after surgery. Time to first analgesic requirement and morphine requirement during the first 6 h were significantly lower in the groups using lornoxicam (group B, C, D) as compared with the group using only morphine (group A). However there was no significant difference between group B and group C or group D which means that the additional analgesic effects of using local anesthetic infiltration and instillation either before (pre-emptive) or after the incision could not be seen in this study. IMPLICATION: Intravenous 16 mg of lornoxicam with 10 mg of morphine significantly reduced postoperative pain during the first 6 h after abdominal hysterectomy. Additional effects of using local anesthetic wound infiltration to the use of lornoxicam could not be demonstrated.

Up-regulation of tumor interleukin-8 expression by infiltrating macrophages: its correlation with tumor angiogenesis and patient survival in non-small cell lung cancer.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the interaction between tumor-infiltrating macrophages and cancer cells and its effect on the expression of a potent angiogenic factor, interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor angiogenesis, and patient outcome in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We measured tumor IL-8 mRNA expression (by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR), intratumor microvessel counts, and tumor-infiltrating macrophage density (by immunohistochemical staining) in 35 NSCLC surgical specimens and correlated with the patient's clinical outcome. We then investigated the interaction between macrophages (cell line THP-1) and six different human cancer cell lines (four NSCLCs, one osteosarcoma, and one hepatoma) and its effect on IL-8 mRNA expression using a macrophage/cancer cell coculture system, IL-8 mRNA expression in lung cancer cells, and macrophages being measured separately after coculture in the presence or absence of six anti-inflammatory agents, i.e., pentoxifylline, aspirin, indomethacin, dexamethasone, celecoxib (a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor), and pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, a specific nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) inhibitor. NF-kappaB transcriptional activity and protein levels were measured by reporter gene assay and Western blot. RESULTS: The tumor-infiltrating macrophage density correlated significantly and positively with tumor IL-8 mRNA expression and intratumor microvessel counts and significantly and negatively with patient survival. In addition, after cell-cell interaction in cancer cell:macrophage cocultures, marked IL-8 mRNA expression was induced in lung cancer cells (approximately 270-fold) and, to a lesser degree, in macrophages (4.5-fold). The increase in IL-8 mRNA expression correlated with the in vitro metastatic potential of the cancer cells. All six anti-inflammatory agents suppressed induction of IL-8 mRNA expression in lung cancer cells by >90%, four (pentoxifylline, celecoxib, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, and dexamethasone) having a dose-dependent effect. NF-kappaB transcriptional regulation and protein levels were simultaneously increased in the nuclei of cancer cells in macrophage/cancer cell cocultures, this effect also being suppressed by all six anti-inflammatory agents. CONCLUSIONS: The interaction between infiltrating macrophages and cancer cells up-regulates IL-8 mRNA expression, especially in the cancer cells; this may contribute greatly to the increased tumor angiogenesis and adverse outcome in NSCLC patients with a high density of tumor-infiltrating macrophages. Anti-inflammatory agents can suppress the induction of IL-8 mRNA expression seen in lung cancer cells after coculture with macrophages, and this suppression is mediated, in part, through the NF-kappaB pathway.

[A study on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Alumina-zirconia nano-composite infiltrated ceramic].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mechanical properties and microstructure of a new dental full-ceramic material: alumina-zirconia nano-composite infiltrated ceramic. METHODS: The flexural strength was tested with three-point bending method and the fracture toughness with single edge notch bend (SENB) method. The composition of crystal phases in the infiltrated ceramic was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure of the infiltrated ceramic was examined by scanning electronic microscope (SEM). RESULTS: The average three-point flexural strength of the material was (610.85 +/- 37.07) MPa and the average fracture toughness determined by SENB method was (6.51 +/- 1.38) MPa.m1/2. The main crystal phases in this composite ceramic were alpha-Al2O3 and TZP-ZrO2. CONCLUSION: Alumina-zirconia nano-composite infiltrated ceramic is a new infiltrated ceramic with favorable mechanical properties. It demonstrated a promising future for clinical application.

[Two cases of Churg-Strauss syndrome with bilateral wide-spread pulmonary infiltrates].

We report two cases of Churg-Strauss syndrome. The first case was a 25-year-old woman with a one year history of bronchial asthma, who developed fever, skin eruptions, abdominal pain and mononeuritis multiplex. During treatment with prednisolone 40 mg per day, chest X-ray films showed bilateral wide-spread infiltrates. When the dosage of prednisolone was increased to 80 mg per day, these infiltrates disappeared. Skin and lung biopsy specimens demonstrated allergic vasculitis and eosinophilic pneumonia. There was no response to high-dose methylprednisolone pulse therapy for persistent severe abdominal pain and mononeuritis multiplex. Pericardial and pleural effusions with eosinophilia recurred eight months later. The second case was a 31-year-old man with a six year history of bronchial asthma, who developed fever, skin eruptions, myalgia and mononeuritis multiplex. One year later, during treatment with prednisolone 15 mg per day, bronchial asthma with eosinophilia relapsed and chest X-ray films showed bilateral patchy infiltrates. Skin biopsy specimens demonstrated eosinophilic infiltrates and necrotizing vasculitis, while lung biopsy specimens demonstrated eosinophilic infiltrates and small granulomas. With additional administration of cyclophosphamide, he has had no evidence of active disease for six years. In both cases, the neurological symptoms persisted despite treatment with high doses of steroids, and during tapering of prednisolone, vasculitis syndrome relapsed. Therefore, long-term careful surveillance is necessary in this disease.

[Clinical study on oropharyngeal fatty infiltration on the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To detect the effect of lipid metabolism, fatty infiltration of oropharyngeal tissues in the subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and its pathogenesis. METHOD: Nineteen subjects in OSAS group and 9 subjects in controlled group were chosen. The related clinical index including the size and weight of uvula in two groups were measured. Each composition of uvular tissue section (transverse section) in all subjects was measured by quantitative, morphometric image analysis technique. The uvular tissue sections were evaluated by light microscope (LM), 4 of them by transmission electron microscope (TEM). RESULT: 1. Subjects in OSAS group significantly had a greater body mass index, neck circumference, waist circumference, waist-to-hip circumference ratio (WHR), weight and size of uvula than those in controlled group. There were significant differences in TC, TG, LDL and TC/HDL between the two groups. 2. A significant difference in percentage of fat, muscle, fibrous tissue in uvula was also founded between the two groups. The serial tissue section of uvula in LM showed that there was excessive fatty infiltration that prominently founded in fibrous tissue and secondarily in muscle. And muscle fibers with partial atrophy and/or hypertrophy were prominent. We also detected that fibrous tissue and muscle fibers arranged in a disordered way. The uvula myofibril in TEM showed focal or spotted rough and deformity of Z line, sarcomere loss and vacuolation. Lipid droplet infiltration was also detected in adjoin of myofibril. 3. The degree of fatty infiltration of uvular tissue correlated with neck circumference, WHR, weight and size of uvula, TC and TC/HDL in two groups, and also had positive correlation with degree of OSAS recorded by AHI in OSAS group. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that lipid metabolic disorder might exist in subjects with OSAS. And abundant oropharyneal fatty infiltration might be an important role in pathogenesis of OSAS that possibly contributed to change the size and shape of pharyngeal airway and compliance of pharyngeal wall.

Prediction of cervical infiltration in Stage II endometrial cancer by different preoperative evaluation techniques (D&C, US, CT, MRI).

OBJECTIVE: Our clinical practice for FIGO Stage II endometrial cancer consists of Wertheim's radical hysterectomy as first choice of treatment. The evaluation of patients is based on D&C. The accuracy of this preoperative staging method is examined here. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with endometrial cancer with suspected cervical involvement (FIGO Stage II) based on endocervical curettage underwent Wertheim's radical hysterectomy between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 2001 at the Gynaecological Department of the National Institute of Cancer, Budapest, Hungary. In all cases surgico-pathological staging was performed to examine the accuracy of preoperative D&C and to find out whether radical surgery was necessary in all patients and how the preoperative evaluation of patients should be improved. RESULTS: Out of 29 patients who underwent Wertheim's hysterectomy the pathological examination found primary cervical cancer in two patients. These two patients were eliminated from further evaluation. Out of the remaining 27 patients only eight (29.6%) had cervical involvement of endometrial cancer documented by a pathologic review on the hysterectomy specimen. Extrauterine disease was documented in one of the patients with cervical infiltration (1/8) and in one in the cervix-negative group (1/19). Ovarian spread was found in the first case and ovarian infiltration with penetration of the tumour into the parametric tissue in the second case. According to the FIGO classification 18 (66.6%) patients had less extensive disease and two (7.4%) had more extensive disease. Only 26% of the patients (7/27) had surgical findings consistent with the Stage II disease. CONCLUSION: We can conclude that "overtreatment" seems to have occurred in 19 patients, whose cervical infiltration by endometrial cancer could not be proved by pathological staging. It can also be assessed that understaging took place in two cases, which can be explained by two reasons; we did not make use of preoperative imaging techniques since US was applied in six patients, CT in 16 and the most accurate, MRI, on three patients only. The other possible reason, which can point out the bad efficacy of the imaging techniques as well, could be that a major part of the patients received preoperative AL treatment, which could also have influenced the cervical progression. This is possible, but has not been proved. The difference in the number of cervical infiltrations in the group of patients who received preoperative radiotherapy and in the group where they did not, is not significant (p = 0.9742), and infiltration of the endometrium was present in all cases. In the future, proper selection of imaging modalities can improve the staging of gynaecological disorders and preclude unnecessary procedures. In endometrial cancer cases US, especially with the use of TVUS, is often considered to be the primary imaging approach. However, in patients where ultrasound is suboptimal, where there is a large tumour present or the result of imaging studies will directly influence the choice of therapy and guide therapy planning then the higher accuracy of MRI warrants its use. CT is of use in the later stages of disease; differentiation between Stage I and II is difficult and CT is limited in the assessment of myometrial invasion.

[Inflammatory cell infiltration around beta 2-microglobulin amyloid deposition: histologic comparison of beta 2-microglobulin amyloidosis with AA or AL amyloidosis].

Thirty-one autopsy cases of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M) amyloidosis were pathologically investigated in comparison with 17 autopsy cases of AA or AL amyloidosis. In 20 cases (65%, 20/31) of beta 2M amyloidosis, inflammatory cells, mainly macrophages were seen infiltrating around beta 2M amyloid in intervertebral disks. The more beta 2M amyloidosis advances, the more macrophage infiltration tends to be prominent. In cases of severe beta 2M amyloidosis, the cytoplasm of macrophages around amyloid deposition were swollen with engulfed amyloid substance and were often transforming to foreign body multinucleated giant cells. In addition, granulation tissue was formed with infiltrating macrophages, foreign body multinucleated giant cells, capillary proliferation and fibrosis around beta 2M amyloid deposition. On the other hand, inflammatory cell infiltration around amyloid deposition was scarcely seen in AA or AL amyloidosis. Ultrastructurally, macrophages were abundant in phagocytic vacuoles containing amyloid fibrils. These macrophages were immunohistochemically positive for CD68, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha. Thus, macrophage infiltration around beta 2M amyloid is thought to be responsible for local pain and tissue destruction of dialysis patients.

Mobilization of T lymphocytes following cardiac transplantation. Evidence that CD4-positive cells are required for cytotoxic T lymphocyte activation, inflammatory endothelial development, graft infiltration, and acute allograft rejection.

Modified limiting dilution analysis (LDA) techniques were used to evaluate the mobilization of antigen-stimulated helper T lymphocytes (HTL) and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) following allogeneic heterotopic cardiac transplantation. These modified LDA techniques allow a quantitative comparison of T cells that have been stimulated by antigen in vivo versus unstimulated precursor T cells of the same antigen specificity. Endothelial changes associated with mononuclear cell infiltration of the transplant were studied using endothelia-specific monoclonal antibodies and immunohistochemistry. Early (day 3) infiltration of cardiac allografts was characterized by a prevalence of donor alloantigen-specific HTL over CTL. Immunohistology revealed that the day-3 infiltrate was associated with areas of differentiated vascular endothelium, located primarily in the subepicardial region. Though donor-specific precursor HTL and CTL were present in the peripheral lymphoid tissues and blood, very few of them had been stimulated at this early time. During the latter phases of the response (days 6-9), antigen-stimulated HTL and CTL were present in the rejecting heart with CTL dominating the response. Accumulation of large numbers of donor-specific CTL in the allograft correlated with extensive inflammatory endothelial development, myocyte destruction, and loss of graft function by day 9. Stimulated HTL and CTL were detectable in peripheral lymphoid tissues at days 6 and 9. In addition, a marked increase in the number of donor-specific precursor CTL, but not precursor HTL, was observed in the lymphoid tissues at the peak of the response. Depletion of class II MHC-restricted T cells by in vivo treatment with anti-CD4 mAb eliminated HTL activity in all lymphoid compartments assessed and markedly reduced the number of CTL infiltrating the allograft. In addition, no stimulated CTL were detectable in lymphoid tissues, and the number of precursor CTL was not increased. In anti-CD4-treated recipients, cardiac allografts remained functional with minimal histological evidence of rejection for at least 21 days. Though graft-associated inflammatory endothelia were absent in anti-CD4-treated recipients at day 6, endothelial differentiation was observed in day 21 allografts in anti-CD4-treated recipients. These observations indicate that inflammatory endothelial development may precede T cell infiltration and subsequent loss of the cardiac allograft function. Thus, CD4-positive HTL are required for (1) graft-associated inflammatory endothelial development; (2) CTL activation in peripheral lymphoid tissues; (3) CTL accumulation in allografted tissues; and (4) acute cardiac allograft rejection.

Infiltrating angiolipoma in the foot.

A case of infiltrating angiolipoma of the right lower extremity is reported. Angiolipomas are benign neoplasms of adipose tissue with a rich vascular component and are classified as either infiltrating or noninfiltrating. Noninfiltrating angiolipomas are seen in young individuals, present as painful, soft, subcutaneous nodules and are treated by enucleation. Infiltrating angiolipoma is a rare neoplasm with only 23 previously reported cases. These lesions are usually unencapsulated or rarely partially encapsulated and tend to infiltrate bony, neural, muscular, and fibrocollagenous tissue. Treatment of infiltrating angiolipomas is aimed at wide excision with radiotherapy indicated for cases of recurrence.
