Endonasal laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy.

Endonasal laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy allows relief of epiphora caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction. It can be performed as a day-case procedure and has many advantages over conventional approaches. This article reviews conventional, endoscopic and laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy and describes the technical steps of an endonasal procedure.

[Endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy].

Contemporary advances in endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses make it possible to identify and open the lacrimal system via the nasal sinus. The authors describe four cases of chronic dacryocystitis with obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct in three women and one man aged 22 to 56 years. In all four patients the lacrimal sac was opened endoscopically by the endonasal route and safeguarded by drainage. In the discussion the authors deal with contemporary views on this problem.

[Lacrimal sac cyst: apropos of a case].

A 17-year-old girl presented a unilateral cyst of the lacrimal sac. Epiphora was induced by compression of the patent lacrimal duct. The bony nasolacrimal canal was enlarged on the affected side. At pathology examination, the epithelium of the cyst wall was identical to the sac epithelium.

Canalicular function during herpetic keratoconjunctivitis in rabbits.

Canalicular function during acute herpetic keratoconjunctivitis was investigated in rabbits. Evidence of partial obstruction of the duct was obtained in the infected as compared with the mock-infected eyes. Direct damage of the ductal epithelium by virus could not be demonstrated by histologic and immunofluorescent studies. Our findings suggest that canalicular dysfunction associated with viral infection may result from accompanying inflammatory changes.

Stenoses and functional disorders of the lacrimal drainage apparatus. Radiological examination.

The diagnosis of epiphora can be greatly aided by a special radiologic technique, performed during bilateral injection of contrast medium into the lacrimal passages and utilizing seriography, magnification and image subtraction. The authors describe the technique, discuss the interpretation of the various radiologic patterns, and stress the importance of this method for evaluating inflammation, stenoses and functional alterations of the lacrimal passages.
