Synthesis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight characterization of bisphenol-A copolyformals containing nickel(II)/Schiff base, eicosane and 2-butene units in the main chain.

Some bisphenol-A copolyformals, containing in the main chain different amounts of a Ni-diimine nonlinear optical (NLO)-chromophore, eicosane and/or 2-butene units, were synthesized by condensation reaction between dibromomethane and suitable mixtures of Ni(II)/Schiff base complex, 1,20-di(bisphenol-A)ether-eicosane and/or 1,4-di(bisphenol-A)ether-2-butene. Structural composition and thermal properties of polymeric materials were inferred by analyses by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). MALDI-TOF data show that both Ni-diimine and unsaturated units are present in the copolyformals with a homogeneous arrangement in all the polymer mass range (GPC data). It has also been ascertained that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers changes as a consequence of the abundance of aliphatic units in the macromolecules (DSC data). Cross-linking experiments of the copolymer at temperatures near the Tg value and under UV irradiation were also performed.

Chronic inhalation oncogenicity study of isoprene in B6C3F1 mice.

The oncogenic potential of isoprene as affected by concentration, length of daily exposure, and weeks of exposure over the life-span of the animal, as independent variables, was evaluated. Ten groups were exposed for 8 h/day, 5 days/week as follows (ppm-weeks): 0-80, 10-80, 70-40, 70-80, 140-40, 280-20, 280-80, 700-80, 2200-40, 2200-80. Two groups were exposed for 4 h/day: 2200-20, 2200-80. Groups were held until 96 or 105 weeks on study. The concentration x time (duration of exposure) values provided a series of theoretically equivalent exposure hazards. There was an exposure-related increased incidence of liver, lung, Harderian gland and forestomach tumors, and hemangiosarcomas and histiocytic sarcomas. The LOEL appeared to be 70 ppm. These results are similar to the profile of tumors seen in 1,3-butadiene (BD)-exposed mice without the early onset of T-cell lymphoma as seen with BD. Isoprene appears to be about one order of magnitude less potent than BD in mice. Statistical analyses indicated that the product of isoprene concentration, and length/duration of exposure was not a sufficient basis for predicting tumor risk at any site. Extrapolation of tumor probability between the high and low doses based on cumulative exposure was not appropriate and could not be justified by statistical models. A threshold effect level and strong nonlinearities with respect to concentration appeared to exist for tumor development in this study.

Phosphorus adsorption on natural sediments: modeling and effects of pH and sediment composition.

The classic Langmuir isotherm equation was modified to describe phosphorus (P) adsorption on P-polluted sediments. The P adsorption characteristics of six sediment samples from Chinese Taihu Lake were studied by short-term isotherm batch experiments and related to sediment composition. The maximum P adsorption capacities (PAC) and P-binding energy constant (k) were obtained by nonlinearly fitting sorption data using the modified Langmuir isotherm model. Native adsorbed exchangeable phosphorus (NAP), the zero equilibrium P concentration value (EPC(0)), and partitioning coefficients (K(p)) were subsequently calculated by corresponding formulae. K(p) and PAC were linearly related to the contents of active Fe and Al in sediments by least squares regression analyses (R(2) approximately 0.9 for both). The effect of pH in a wide range on adsorption process was investigated and H2PO4- was presumed to be the preferential sorption species in overall sorption process. The fact that the amount of P sorbed and zeta potential of sediment particles have no necessary relationship reveals that a strong contribution to the P binding still comes from a ligand-exchange process on the Me-OH(2+) and Me-OH sites rather than electrostatic attraction. In addition, the influence of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was investigated and discussed and the dual nature of sediments as a pool or source of P in natural waters was evaluated in site T1-T4.

New metal iodates: syntheses, structures, and characterizations of noncentrosymmetric La(IO3)3 and NaYI4O12 and Centrosymmetric beta-Cs2I4O11 and Rb2I6O15(OH)2.H2O.

Four new metal iodates, beta-Cs2I4O11, Rb2I6O15(OH)2.H2O, La(IO3)3, and NaYI4O12, have been synthesized hydrothermally, and the structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. All of the reported materials contain I5+ cations that are in asymmetric coordination environments attributable to their stereoactive lone pair. Second-order nonlinear optical measurements on noncentrosymmetric La(IO3)3 and NaYI4O12, using 1064-nm radiation, indicate that both materials have second-harmonic-generating properties with efficiencies of approximately 400xSiO2. Converse piezoelectric measurements revealed d33 values of 5 and 138 pm V-1 for La(IO3)3 and NaYI4O12, respectively. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses are also presented for all of the reported materials. Crystal data: beta-Cs2I4O11, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n (No. 14), with a=12.7662(14) A, b=7.4598(8) A, c=14.4044(16) A, beta=106.993(2) degrees, V=1311.9(2) A3, and Z=4; Rb2I6O15(OH)2.H2O, triclinic, space group P (No. 2), with a=7.0652(17) A, b=7.5066(18) A, c=18.262(4) A, alpha=79.679(4) degrees, beta=85.185(4) degrees, gamma=70.684(4) degrees, V=898.9(4) A3, and Z=2; La(IO3)3, monoclinic, space group Cc (No. 9), with a=12.526(2) A, b=7.0939(9) A, c=27.823(4) A, beta=101.975(4) degrees, V=2418.4(6) A3, and Z=4; NaYI4O12, monoclinic, space group Cc (No. 9), with a=31.235(3) A, b=5.5679(5) A, c=12.5451(12) A, beta=91.120(3) degrees, V=2181.3(4) A3, and Z=4.

Auditory processing efficiency and temporal resolution in children and adults.

Children have higher auditory backward masking (BM) thresholds than adults. One explanation for this is poor temporal resolution, resulting in difficulty separating brief or rapidly presented sounds. This implies that the auditory temporal window is broader in children than in adults. Alternatively, elevated BM thresholds in children may indicate poor processing efficiency. In this case, children would need a higher signal-to-masker ratio than adults to detect the presence of a signal. This would result in poor performance on a number of psychoacoustic tasks but would be particularly marked in BM due to the compressive nonlinearity of the basilar membrane. The objective of the present study was to examine the competing hypotheses of "temporal resolution" and "efficiency" by measuring BM as a function of signal-to-masker interval in children and adults. The children had significantly higher thresholds than the adults at each of the intervals. Subsequent modeling and analyses showed that the data for both children and adults were best fitted using the same, fixed temporal window. Therefore, the differences in BM threshold between adults and children were not due to differences in temporal resolution but to reduced detection efficiency in the children.

AVM modelling by multi-branching tube flow: large flow rates and dual solutions.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) present a common yet complex clinical challenge, through 'steal' phenomena, haemorrhage risks and epilepsy effects, aspects which are little understood even for individual lesions. The main difficulty lies in understanding the detailed haemodynamics of AVMs and especially the enhanced through-flow associated with steal. Mathematically, as a basic step, the paper investigates a nonlinear inviscid model for the planar incompressible flow of fluid through a branched geometry consisting of a single feeding mother tube which splits into two or more non-aligned daughter tubes. Recurrence relations between the unknown flow profiles in the daughter tubes and the incoming rotational flow profile in the mother tube are derived, analysed, and solved in detail in order to find the total flow rate. The results show greatly enhanced through-flow arising, for a fixed value of the total downstream flow area, either from non-unique solutions to the problem or more particularly from an increase in the number of daughter tubes, or from both, depending on the distribution of pressure differences applied across the branching region and the total downstream flow area. Extensions of the basic flow model are noted, along with comparisons with recent direct numerical simulations and discussion of possible repercussions in the context of treatment and clinical observations of enhanced through-flows in AVMs.

Substance use disorder in hospitalized severely mentally ill psychiatric patients: prevalence, correlates, and subgroups.

The prevalence and demographic and clinical correlates of lifetime substance use disorders were examined in a cohort of 325 recently hospitalized psychiatric patients (53% schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder). Alcohol use was the most common type of substance use disorder, followed by cannabis and cocaine use. Univariate analyses indicated that gender (male), age (younger), education (less), history of time in jail, conduct disorder symptoms, and antisocial personality disorder symptoms were predictive of substance use disorders. Lifetime cannabis use disorder was uniquely predicted by marital status (never married) and fewer psychiatric hospitalizations during the previous 6 months. Optimal classification tree analysis, an exploratory, nonlinear method of identifying patient subgroups, was successful in predicting 74 percent to 86 percent of the alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine use disorders. The implications of this method for identifying specific patient subgroups and service needs are discussed.

Global variation in the diversification rate of passerine birds.

Net diversification rates were estimated for samples of primarily tribe-to-family-level clades of passerine birds, taking into account extinction as well as speciation. Two samples were used. The first consisted of 37 clades of primarily temperate North American and primarily tropical South American passerines; the second comprised a global set of 90 clades, each distributed within one or more zoogeographic regions. Circumscription and ages of clades were taken from Sibley and Ahlquist's phylogeny based on DNA hybridization, with updates from more recent sequence analysis. Under a homogeneous speciation (rate = lamda) and extinction (rate = mu) process, the expected number of species (N) after t units of time can be described by the expression, N(t)= [exp(lamda(1 - kappa) t - kappa]/(1 - kappa), where kappa = mu/lamda. A nonlinear least-squares regression for the temperate and tropical American clades with more than one species estimated kappa = 0.938 +/- 0.076 (mean +/- SE), suggesting a high rate of turnover of lineages within clades. Because of the broad confidence limits in kappa, I used values ranging from 0.80 to 0.98 to calculate speciation rates in subsequent analyses, assuming that kappa is uniform among clades and does not vary with latitude. Speciation rate among South American clades exceeded that among North American clades for all kappa, whether monophyletic lineages were included or not. The estimated speciation rate was negatively related to clade age, suggesting that proliferation within clades slows with time. In the global data set, rate of speciation decreased with clade age and increased with the area of the region or regions within which a clade is distributed, and for any given value of kappa the speciation rate was significantly higher in tropical than in temperate regions. Relaxing the assumption of latitude independence in kappa, larger clade size in the tropics could be achieved by various combinations of relative speciation and extinction rates that obscure the underlying causes of global biodiversity patterns. Nonetheless, the results of this analysis clearly indicate that a higher rate of diversification in the tropics contributes to the pervasive latitudinal gradient in diversity observed in passerine birds.

Body mass index and quality of life in a survey of primary care patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing and contributes to the burden of ill health in the community. The impact of obesity on health-related quality of life has been less well studied than how it affects physical morbidity and mortality. METHODS: A survey of health-related quality of life using the 12-item Short Form (SF-12) of the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 was mailed to patients attending a family medicine clinic. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the relationships between scores on the mental and physical components of the SF-12 and body mass index (BMI) while controlling for age, sex, and family income. RESULTS: Responses were received from 565 subjects (53%). The relationships among BMI and quality of life in the mental and physical domains were nonlinear. Quality of life scores were optimal when BMI was in the range of 20 to 25 kg per m2. CONCLUSIONS: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has published evidence-based clinical guidelines for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults. Subjects with BMI in the range 18.5 to 24.9 kg per m2 are classified as having normal weight. These observations suggest that achieving a weight in this range will maximize the patient's subjective sense of well-being.

Measuring and quantifying dynamic visual signals in jumping spiders.

Animals emit visual signals that involve simultaneous, sequential movements of appendages that unfold with varying dynamics in time and space. Algorithms have been recently reported (e.g. Peters et al. in Anim Behav 64:131-146, 2002) that enable quantitative characterization of movements as optical flow patterns. For decades, acoustical signals have been rendered by techniques that decompose sound into amplitude, time, and spectral components. Using an optic-flow algorithm we examined visual courtship behaviours of jumping spiders and depict their complex visual signals as "speed waveform", "speed surface", and "speed waterfall" plots analogous to acoustic waveforms, spectrograms, and waterfall plots, respectively. In addition, these "speed profiles" are compatible with analytical techniques developed for auditory analysis. Using examples from the jumping spider Habronattus pugillis we show that we can statistically differentiate displays of different "sky island" populations supporting previous work on diversification. We also examined visual displays from the jumping spider Habronattus dossenus and show that distinct seismic components of vibratory displays are produced concurrently with statistically distinct motion signals. Given that dynamic visual signals are common, from insects to birds to mammals, we propose that optical-flow algorithms and the analyses described here will be useful for many researchers.

Ventricular fibrillation exhibits dynamical properties and self-similarity.

Electrocardiographic recordings of ventricular fibrillation (VF) appear chaotic. Previous attempts to characterize the chaotic nature of VF have relied on peak-to-peak intervals [Witkowski et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 1995;75(6):1230-3; Garfinkel et al., J. Clin. Investig. 1997;99(2):305-314; Hastings et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 1996;93:10495-9], the frequency spectrum [Goldberger et al., 1986;19:282-289] or other derived measures [Kaplan and Cohen, Circ. Res. 1990;67:886-92], with results that demonstrate some characteristics of chaos. We have sought to determine whether VF is chaotic rather than random and whether the waveform can be described quantitatively using the tools of fractal geometry. We have constructed an attractor, measured the correlation dimensions, estimated the embedding dimension and measured Lyapunov exponents. When the digitized waveform is analyzed directly, VF exhibits nonrandom, chaotic behavior over a decade of sampling frequency. Within the scaling range we have estimated the Hurst exponent, and the self-similarity dimension of the VF waveform, supporting the presence of chaotic dynamics. Furthermore, these characteristics are measurable in a porcine model of VF under different recording conditions, and in VF recordings taken from human subjects immediately prior to defibrillation. Analyses of the Hurst exponents and self-similarity dimensions are correlated with the duration of VF, which may have clinical applications.

Postprandial duodenojejunal motility in health and idiopathic severe gastroparesis: from conventional analysis to nonlinear dynamics analysis.

Our aim was to compare the results of the analysis of postprandial duodenojejunal motor patterns provided by a conventional computer-aided analysis with those provided by the new nonlinear mathematical method borrowed from 'chaos theory for determining how nonlinear analysis can improve fed motor pattern analysis and detect organization of postprandial contractions. Ten patients who had been explored for an idiopathic gastroparesis, and 20 healthy volunteers underwent duodenojejunal manometric recording for 3 h after a 750 kcal meal. Computer-aided analysis on each half-hour of the postprandial recording period calculated the number of waves (NW) and the area under the curve (AUC). Pressure signals were concurrently described by phase portraits obtained by plotting each pressure value at time t with the pressure value at time t + 1 s. The shape and amplitude of phase portraits were visually analysed and the relative area covered (RAC) by the phase portraits was calculated. With conventional analysis, NW and AUC were maximal during the first post-meal hour then decreased with time both in healthy volunteers and gastroparetic patients. With this analysis, the only difference between patients and controls was a lower NW (P < 0.02) in patients, observed only in the duodenum. Phase portraits analysis demonstrated lower RAC, a different distribution of RAC and more regular phase portraits in patients than in controls. Phase portraits outlined the heterogeneity of the patient group contrasting with the homogeneity of the control group when no subgroup was demonstrated by conventional analysis. We therefore conclude that the study of post prandial duodenojejunal motor behaviour could be improved by nonlinear dynamic analysis.

The slope parameter of concentration-response curves used as a touchstone for the existence of spare receptors.

The present work was stimulated by findings of a large reserve of presynaptic alpha2-autoreceptors in rat neocortex by different investigators and our own group, using classical models of receptor agonism. The mathematical background of these classical models seems erroneous since the asymmetry that spare receptors introduce into concentration-response curves is not considered appropriately. This asymmetry leads to a steepening of curve fits based on the logistic function. Therefore, the slope parameter c of a logistically fitted concentration-response curve can be used as a touchstone for the existence of spare receptors. Spare receptors induce a c > 1. Concentration-response data of the alpha2-autoreceptor-mediated inhibition of evoked [3H]-noradrenaline release in rat neocortex slices were re-analysed. The estimates of the slope parameter c of logistically fitted concentration-response curves obtained after treatment of rats with either vehicle or N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ) to achieve an irreversible inactivation of alpha2-autoreceptors, were not compatible with the existence of a large receptor reserve. A model for nonlinear regression analysis developed under the a priori assumption of spare receptors confirmed the absence of spare receptors. Evaluation methods which neglect the alteration of the geometrical form of concentration-response curves due to non-proportionality between receptor occupation and relative response do not seem appropriate to quantify spare receptors. These methods may detect spare receptors where they do not exist.

Amniotic fluid volume in normal singleton pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the amniotic fluid (AF) volume in normal singleton pregnancies from 15 to 40 weeks. METHODS: This prospective study evaluated the AF volume in singleton pregnancies undergoing amniocentesis for genetic assessment of fetal karyotype, preterm labor, or fetal lung maturity. Amniotic fluid volume was determined using a dye dilution technique. To assess the relationship between AF volume and estimated gestational age, a nonlinear regression model was applied. RESULTS: One hundred forty-four normal singleton pregnancies had AF volume evaluated. There was wide variability in the measured AF volumes with a significant (P < .01) increase in AF volume as a function of gestational age. Growth curve modeling estimated that AF volume continued to increase until 40 weeks' gestation. Analyses of the observed AF volume indicated that AF volume nearly doubled after 30 weeks' gestation. CONCLUSION: In contrast to other reports indicating that maximal AF volume in singleton gestations is expected early in the third trimester, we observed the attainment of maximal AF volume near term.

The association between coronary calcification assessed by electron beam computed tomography and measures of extracoronary atherosclerosis: the Rotterdam Coronary Calcification Study.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to examine the associations of coronary calcification assessed by electron beam computed tomography (CT) with measures of extracoronary atherosclerosis. BACKGROUND: Although measures of extracoronary atherosclerosis have been used to predict coronary events, it is not yet known to what extent those measures reflect coronary atherosclerosis. METHODS: The Rotterdam Coronary Calcification Study is a population-based study in subjects age 55 years and over. Participants of the study underwent an electron beam CT scan. Coronary calcification was quantified according to the Agatston calcium score. Measures of extracoronary atherosclerosis included common carotid intima media thickness (IMT), carotid plaques, ankle-arm index (AAI) and aortic calcification. We used the first 2,013 participants for the present analyses. Age-adjusted geometric mean calcium scores were computed for categories of extracoronary measures using analyses of variance. RESULTS: Graded associations with coronary calcification were found for the carotid and aortic measures. Associations were strongest for carotid plaques and aortic calcification; coronary calcification increased from the lowest category (no plaques) to the highest category 9-fold and 11-fold in men and 10-fold and 20-fold in women, respectively. A nonlinear association was found for AAI with an increase in coronary calcification only at lower levels of AAI. CONCLUSIONS: In this population-based study, graded associations were found between coronary calcification and common carotid IMT, carotid plaques and aortic calcification. A nonlinear association was found between coronary calcification and the AAI.

Non-linear pharmacokinetics of MDMA ('ecstasy') in humans.

AIMS: 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, commonly called ecstasy) is a synthetic compound increasingly popular as a recreational drug. Little is known about its pharmacology, including its metabolism and pharmacokinetics, in humans in controlled settings. A clinical trial was designed for the evaluation of MDMA pharmacological effects and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers. METHODS: A total of 14 subjects were included. In the pilot phase six received MDMA at 50 (n=2), 100 (n=2), and 150 mg (n=2). In the second phase eight received MDMA at both 75 and 125 mg (n=8). Subjects were phenotyped for CYP2D6 activity and were classified as extensive metabolizers for substrates, such as MDMA, whose hepatic metabolism is regulated by this enzyme. Plasma and urine samples were collected throughout the study for the evaluation of MDMA pharmacokinetics. Body fluids were analysed for the determination of MDMA and its main metabolites 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-methamphetamine (HMMA) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-amphetamine (HMA). RESULTS: As the dose of MDMA administered was increased, volunteers showed rises in MDMA concentrations that did not follow the same proportionality which could be indicative of nonlinearity. In the full range of doses tested the constant recovery of HMMA in the urine combined with the increasing MDMA recovery seems to point towards a saturation or an inhibition of MDMA metabolism (the demethylenation step). These observations are further supported by the fact that urinary clearance was rather constant while nonrenal clearance was dose dependent. CONCLUSIONS: It has previously been postulated that individuals genetically deficient for the hepatic enzyme CYP2D6 (about 10% of the Caucasian people) were at risk of developing acute toxicity at moderate doses of MDMA because the drug would accumulate in the body instead of being metabolized and inactivated. The lack of linearity of MDMA pharmacokinetics (in a window of doses compatible with its recreational use) is a more general phenomenon as it concerns the whole population independent of their CYP2D6 genotype. It implies that relatively small increases in the dose of MDMA ingested are translated to disproportionate rises in MDMA plasma concentrations and hence subjects are more prone to develop acute toxicity.

Evaluating psychiatric hospital admission decisions for children in foster care: an optimal classification tree analysis.

This study explored clinical and nonclinical predictors of inpatient hospital admission decisions across a sample of children in foster care over 4 years (N = 13,245). Forty-eight percent of participants were female and the mean age was 13.4 (SD = 3.5 years). Optimal data analysis (Yarnold & Soltysik, 2005) was used to construct a nonlinear classification tree model for predicting admission decisions. As expected, clinical variables such as suicidality, psychoticism, and dangerousness predicted psychiatric admissions; however, several variables that are not direct indications of acute psychiatric distress, such as the presence of family problems and the location of the hospital screening, impacted decision making in a subsample of cases. Further analyses indicated that the model developed in Year 1 reliably and consistently predicted admission decisions (with 64%-68% overall accuracy) across the next 3 years. Policy, research, and clinical implications are discussed.

The technology of accelerometry-based activity monitors: current and future.

PURPOSE: This paper reviews accelerometry-based activity monitors, including single-site first-generation devices, emerging technologies, and analytical approaches to predict energy expenditure, with suggestions for further research and development. METHODS: The physics and measurement principles of the accelerometer are described, including the sensor properties, data collections, filtering, and integration analyses. The paper also compares these properties in several commonly used single-site accelerometers. The emerging accelerometry technologies introduced include the multisensor arrays and the combination of accelerometers with physiological sensors. The outputs of accelerometers are compared with criterion measures of energy expenditure (indirect calorimeters and double-labeled water) to develop mathematical models (linear, nonlinear, and variability approaches). RESULTS: The technologies of the sensor and data processing directly influence the results of the outcome measurement (activity counts and energy expenditure predictions). Multisite assessment and combining accelerometers with physiological measures may offer additional advantages. Nonlinear approaches to predict energy expenditure using accelerometer outputs from multiple sites and orientation can enhance accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: The development of portable accelerometers has made objective assessments of physical activity possible. Future technological improvements will include examining raw acceleration signals and developing advanced models for accurate energy expenditure predictions.
