31 women were vaccinated with attenuated rubella-virus (RV) strains. According to the prevaccinal antibody status they were grouped as follows: I: HIT 1: less than 10, RV-specific IgG 1: less than 20; II: HIT 1: less than 10, RV-specific IgG 1: greater than 20; III: HIT 1: greater than or equal to 10, RV-specific IgG 1: greater than 30. The postvaccinal geometric mean titers for RV-ELISA-IgG were somewhat higher in group II compared to group I, eventually because of a weak booster effect based on low level prevaccinal RV-antibody titers--but the difference is not significant for 5%. The difference between RV-ELISA-IgG in group II and group I is significant. Within group II there is a low titer rise upon vaccination although elevated prevaccinal titers were already present. The quotient "RV-ELISA-IgG-titer: HIT-titer" is in the range of greater than or equal to 23:1 for the postvaccinal period (8-10 weeks after vaccination) compared to about 8:1 resp. in stationary sera of reconvalescent individuals. These quotients could be helpful for interpretation of suspicious elevated titers during pregnancy.

A 60-mo longitudinal study has been undertaken in 99 HBeAg-positive patients with clinicopathologically verified chronic hepatitis. Hepatitis B e antigen clearance occurred in 30 patients at a rate of approximately 17% per year. A phenomenon of abrupt elevation of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (greater than 300 IU/L) with histological changes compatible with chronic lobular hepatitis was observed in 13 of 20 patients (65%) preceding spontaneous HBeAg clearance. In contrast, 8 of 10 patients on immunosuppressive or antiviral therapy, or both, had uneventful HBeAg clearance. It was concluded that HBeAg clearance can occur in patients with varying immunologic status. The mechanism responsible for HBeAg clearance awaits further study.

67.5% of 506 girls aged 12-19 years had antibodies against rubella. 168 seronegative girls were vaccinated with rubella vaccine Wistar RA 27/3, application by jet injector. All 166 serologically controlled girls developed HAI-antibodies with a geometric mean titer of 1:87. The geometric mean titer of the naturally immunized girls was 1:140.

In the province of Ferrara (Italy) a programme for the prophylaxis against some connatal infections has been carried out through a "Service for the epidemiology and prevention of connatal rubella and toxoplasmosis", which has been instituted in 1978. The investigations on two female groups of different age (prepuberal and adult fecund women) have allowed to obtain the following data: 1. rebella infection has a high incidence yet in prepuberal age (10 years) when a percentage of 62.1 women have already acquired a strong immunity; this percentage arises to 85.0 in adult fecund women. The "conversion index" of 22.9 corresponds to the percentage of subjects who have got the infection in postpuberal, "at risk" age; 2. toxoplasmosis has different epidemiological features; its incidence is lower, in prepuberal age (31.7%), while it is higher (63.4%) in adult fecund women. The highest incidence between 15 and 20 years, and the highest "conversion index" (31.7) underline that, notwithstanding its lower infectiousness, the risk of connatal toxoplasmosis is higher than that of connatal rubella, as far as our country is concerned. Such epidemiological investigations are believed to be necessary to carry out a really useful programme for the prevention of connatal rubella and toxoplasmosis.
