[Interdisciplinary communication in neonatology].

An efficient and rational neonatal intensive care should be regionalized. Interdepartmental communication among obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians, neurologists should be planned and stirred between the reference centre and the outside hospitals, as well as in the catchment area. In this way only, such important goals as in-utero and neonatal transfer, training of obstetric neonatal teams, regionalized epidemiology and care evaluation can be achieved. In the same way, communication inside the hospital among doctors, nurses and parents is basic to humanize medical care.

Podiatrists: source of referrals to family physicians.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the methods of referral and the satisfaction that podiatrists feel from the referrals they make to family physicians. Furthermore, this study examines the correlates of podiatrists' referrals to family physicians and also the referrals podiatrists receive back (reciprocal referrals) from family physicians. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to all podiatrists who practice in the Chicago (IL) metropolitan area. The survey response rate was 68.2% (191 of 280). RESULTS: Podiatrists who more often socially interact with family physicians, practice in close physical proximity to family physicians, and communicate interpersonally with family physicians are more likely to be involved in reciprocal referrals with family physicians. In addition, 67.7% of the podiatrists are satisfied with the referrals they make to family physicians. CONCLUSIONS: We found an important patient referral network from podiatrists to family physicians. Our findings are consistent with the contention that, in family practice, interprovider coordination of care is facilitated by open and interpersonal communication.

Neonatal and pediatric critical care: a call for collaboration.

Neonatal and pediatric critical care units are growing in size and complexity. Each unit is staffed by a highly specialized group of nurses. Although the units share many commonalities, the relationship between nurses in the neonatal and pediatric critical care units often is characterized by rivalry and antagonism rather than by cooperation. The purpose of this report is to identify similarities and differences between the two units and to describe the benefits of collaboration between units.

Communication between space crews and ground personnel: a survey of astronauts and cosmonauts.

A total of 54 astronauts and cosmonauts returned questionnaires which addressed several aspects of communication between space crews and ground personnel. Two factors were rated as significantly helping this communication: Shared Experience and Excitement of Space Flight. Two additional factors were judged to significantly hinder space-ground communication: Spacecraft Ambient Noise and Space Sickness. Respondents also significantly endorsed the value of contact with loved ones on Earth as having a positive influence on mission performance, particularly cosmonauts and long-duration space travelers. The need for a private space-ground transmission link was mentioned by several respondents. There was no consensus as to whether or not negative personal information should be withheld until the space crew returned to Earth, although some respondents indicated that this might be justified during short-duration as opposed to long-duration missions. These findings have important scientific and operational implications for future manned space missions.
