Fertility transition in Indonesia, trends in proximate determinants of fertility, based on the 1987 NICPS/DHS.

The authors "estimate proximate determinants of fertility in Indonesia from the 1987 National Indonesia Contraceptive Prevalence Survey (1987 NICPS). For Java and Bali, the results will be compared to the 1976 Indonesia Fertility Survey's estimates of proximate determinants [to]....provide a better understanding of the causes of fertility decline in Java-Bali during 1976-1987." A theoretical model is used to estimate biological and behavioral proximate determinants of fertility, including marriage and divorce, infertility, postpartum amenorrhea, contraceptive use, induced abortion, fecundability and coital frequency, and fetal death. A survey analysis of the status of influent reproductive age women in Shanghai--a survey report.

Characteristics of the female transient population of reproductive age in Shanghai, China, are assessed using data from an October 1988 survey. "Not only did this survey supply large quantities of basic data on the floating population for the Shanghai government and related departments, but [it] was also very enlightening for our research into how to make a good job of family planning administration for China's urban-rural floating population."

Socio-economic development and transition in the duration of post-partum amenorrhoea: survival function analysis of data.

The impact of improved maternal socioeconomic status in the form of nutritious food on length of postpartum amenorrhea (PPA) is assessed using data for Varanasi city, India, for the period 1987-1990. "Estimates of survival functions corresponding to data relating to mothers of different social status groups, assumed to represent health condition of mothers, are obtained and compared. Finally, it is concluded that the distribution of duration of PPA is a mixture of two distributions and it differs from one social status group to [the] other."

[Fertility decline and changes in proximate determinants in Latin America and the Caribbean].

"The objective of this paper is to discuss the role that three of the proximate determinants of fertility (marriage, contraception and post-partum insusceptibility) have played in fertility change in Latin America and the Caribbean. First we look at issues of data availability and comparability on measures of the proximate determinants from retrospective surveys. Most of the data utilized come from the World Fertility Survey (WFS) and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) projects. Second, we present results from the most widely applied model for assessing the impact that these proximate determinants have on fertility, that of Bongaarts....Finally, we compare the results from the application of the Bongaarts model with those from an alternative method proposed by Moreno. Both models show that increased use of contraception is by far the most important reason for fertility decline, with marriage and post-partum insusceptibility making much smaller contributions. However, the second model suggests that the role of the marriage and post-partum insusceptibility factors is much smaller than is shown by the Bongaarts model." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Complex roots of Lotka's integral equation for a special model of net maternity rates.

"An attempt to obtain the solutions of Lotka's integral equation has been made in this paper by assuming a Pearsonian Type III function for the age distribution of the net maternity rates. The shifting of the origin of the function from the traditional value of age zero to the most meaningful lower boundary of the reproductive interval gave rise to an analytical expression of the equation with interesting properties most of which have not yet been encountered in similar endeavors."
