Metamagnetism in cobalt phosphates with pillared layer structures: [Co3(pyz)(HPO4)2F2] and [Co3(4,4'-bpy)(HPO4)2F2].xH2O.

Two new cobalt phosphates, [Co(3)(pyz)(HPO(4))(2)F(2)] (1) and [Co(3)(4,4'-bpy)(HPO(4))(2)F(2)].xH(2)O (x approximately 0.7) (2), have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods in the presence of aromatic amines, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility. Their structures consist of neutral sheets of fluorinated cobalt phosphate which are pillared through pyrazine and 4,4'-bipyridine molecules to form 3D frameworks. The structures are related to that of the mineral lazulite. Both compounds show long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 15 K and metamagnetic behaviors. Compound 1 reveals a two-step magnetic phase transition. Crystal data for 1: monoclinic, space group C2/c (No. 15), a = 21.809(4) A, b = 7.370(1) A, c = 7.395(1) A, beta = 103.753(3) degrees, and Z = 4. Crystal data for 2 are the same as those for 1 except a = 29.940(2) A, b = 7.4421(5) A, c = 7.4170(5) A, and beta = 93.444(1) degrees.

Flexible ligands and structural diversity: isomerism in Cd(NO3)2 coordination polymers.

The ligands 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanylmethyl)benzene (L1) and 2,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanylmethyl)pyrazine (L2) were treated with Cd(NO3)2.4H2O in metal-to-ligand ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively; L2 was also treated with CdCl2.2.5H2O in a 2:1 ratio. All products were found to be coordination polymers. The crystal structures of {[Cd(L1)(NO3)2].CH2Cl2}infinity (1a), {[Cd(L1)(NO3)2].4/3CH3CN}infinity (1b), {[Cd2(L2)(NO3)4].2CH3CN}infinity (2.2CH3CN), and {[Cd2(L2)Cl4].2CH2Cl2}infinity (3.2CH2Cl2) were determined. Compounds 1a and 1b were found to be conformational supramolecular isomers. The structure of 1b displayed topological isomerism with two isomeric polymer chains, 1b(1) and 1b(2), in the one crystal forming a single supramolecular array. The structure of 2.2CH(3)CN showed Cd2(L2) units linked together by nitrates bridging between the Cd(II) centers in a mode previously not seen in Cd(II) compounds. The overall structure of 3.2CH2Cl2 was found to be similar to that of 2.2CH3CN despite the presence of different anions and solvent molecules. Powder X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the nature of bulk preparations of compounds 1-3.

Structure of a discrete hexadecameric water cluster in a metal-organic framework structure.

Pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic acid (pytcH(4)) reacts with Cu(NO(3))(2)x6H(2)O in 1:2 molar ratio in the presence of pyridine (py) vapor to form blue crystals of a coordination polymer with the empirical formula [Cu(2.5)(pytc)(py)(8)(NO(3)(-))x10H(2)O](n). Four such polymeric chains gather around a hexadecameric water cluster to form an overall 3D metal-organic framework structure. Once the water molecules are removed, the 3D structure breaks down. It presents a new mode of association of water molecules not predicted theoretically or found experimentally.

Luminescent platinum(II) dimers with a cyclometallating aryldiamine ligand.

Triflate salts of three (Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-L)2+ (pip2NCNH = 1,3-bis(piperidylmethyl)benzene) dimers bridged by a series of nitrogen-donor ligands (L = pyrazine (pyz), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa), trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) are reported. These complexes have been fully characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The X-ray crystal structures of [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-pyz)](CF3SO3)2 and [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpe)](CF3SO3)2 x 2CH2Cl2 are reported. [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-pyz)](CF3SO3)2: triclinic, P, a = 12.5240(5) A, b = 14.1570(6) A, c = 14.2928(6) A, alpha = 106.458(1) degrees , beta = 92.527(1) degrees , gamma = 106.880(1) degrees , V = 2303.46(17) A(3), Z = 2. [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpe)](CF3SO3)2 x 2CH2Cl2: monoclinic, P21/c, a = 10.1288(6) A, b = 16.3346(9) A, c = 17.4764(10) A, beta = 90.882(2) degrees , V = 2891.1(3) A3, Z = 2. These structures and solution measurements provide evidence for the strong trans-directing properties of the pip2NCN- ligand. The electronic structures of these complexes and those of the 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) dimer, (Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpy)2+, also have been investigated by UV-visible absorption and emission spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry. The accumulated data indicate that variations in the bridging ligands provide remarkable control over the electronic structures and photophysics of these complexes. Notably, the bpa dimer exhibits a broad, low-energy emission from a metal-centered 3LF excited state, whereas the bpe and bpy dimers exhibit structured emission from a lowest pyridyl-centered 3(pi-pi*) excited state. In contrast, the pyz dimer exhibits remarkably intense yellow emission tentatively assigned to a triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state.

New Ag(I)-containing coordination polymers generated from multidentate Schiff-base ligands.

The coordination chemistry of the multidentate Schiff-base ligands 2,5-bis(3-methylpyrazinyl)-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene (L5) and 2,5-bis(pyrazinyl)-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene (L6) with inorganic Ag(I) salts has been investigated. Six new Ag(I)-coordination polymers were prepared by solution reactions and fully characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Ag(L5)]ClO(4).0.5CH(3)OH (1, orthorhombic, Fdd2; a = 20.0896(11) A, b = 48.224(3) A, c = 7.8432(4) A, Z = 16), [Ag(L5)]PF(6).0.5CH(3)OH (2, orthorhombic, Fdd2; a = 20.7255(11) A, b = 46.166(2) A, c = 8.4332(4) A, Z = 16), [Ag(L5)]SbF(6).0.5CH(3)OH (3, orthorhombic, Fdd2; a = 21.5481(11) A, b = 45.196(2) A, c = 8.7331(4) A, Z = 16), and [Ag(L5)](BF(4)).0.5CH(3)OH (4, orthorhombic, Fdd2; a = 19.8897(11) A, b = 48.358(3) A, c = 7.7491(5) A, Z = 16) were obtained by combination of L5 with AgClO(4).xH(2)O, AgPF(6), AgSbF(6), and AgBF(4), respectively, in a methylene chloride/methanol mixed solvent system. Compounds 1-4 are isostructural and feature noninterpenetrating three-dimensional zeolite-like networks. [Ag(4)(L6)(4)](PF(6))(4).CHCl(3) (5, tetragonal, Pc2; a = 16.1067(3) A, b = 16.1067(3) A, c = 14.4935(5) A, Z = 2) was generated from the reaction of L6 with AgPF(6) in a chloroform/ethanol mixed solvent system. It forms with a unique one-dimensional nanometer-tube that can be considered a new polymeric motif based on the [AgN5] coordination sphere. The tubes are square with crystallographic dimensions of 10.3 x 10.0 A. The tubes are further linked together through weak interpolymer C-H...F hydrogen bonding interactions into a novel H-bonded three-dimensional network containing square tubes, in which uncoordinated PF(6)(-) counterions and chloroform guest molecules are located. Compound 6 ([Ag(mu-C(6)H(6)N(2)O)](SO(3)CF(3)), monoclinic, P2(1)/c; a = 12.3435(6) A, b = 20.3548(10) A, c = 9.0861(5) A, Z = 8) was obtained by combination of AgSO(3)CF(3) and L6 in a methylene chloride/benzene mixed solvent system. In 6, 2-acetylpyrazine, which was generated from the hydrolysis reaction of L6 in the presence of CF(3)SO(3)(-) and a small quantity of water in solvent, chelates the Ag(I) centers through the carbonyl O-donor, and the vicinal pyrazine N-donor, furthermore, uses the para-N atoms to link other Ag(I) centers into one-dimensional zigzag chains. The triflate anions link the chains into a three-dimensional network by somewhat long Ag.O contacts.

Hydrothermal syntheses and structures of two mixed-valence copper(I,II) 2-pyrazinecarboxylate coordination polymers.

Replacement of linear ligand L in Cu(I)XL system (X = halide or pseudohalide; L = 4,4'-bipyridine or pyrazine) by neutral species Cu(pzc)2(H2O)x (pzc = 2-pyrazinecarboxylate) resulted in mixed-valence Cu(I,II) coordination polymers [Cu2(pzc)2Br(H2O)]n (1) and [Cu3(pzc)2(CN)2(H2O)2 x 2H2O]n (2). Complex 1 has two-dimensional (4,4) topological layer constructed by [CuBr]n chains and Cu(pzc)2(H2O) species, while 2 has a three-dimensional framework formed by linkage of two-dimensional (6,3) layers via ligand-unsupported Cu(I)-Cu(I) interactions. The two-dimensional (6,3) layer in 2 is constructed by zigzag [CuCN]n chains and Cu(pzc)2(H2O)2 species. Cyanides in 2 were produced by oxidative desulfation of SCN- anions.

Tuning the electronic communication and rates of intramolecular electron transfer of dimers of trinuclear ruthenium clusters: bridging and ancillary ligand effects.

Ten new bridged dimers of oxo-centered triruthenium clusters with CO and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (dmap), pyridine (py), or 4-cyanopyridine (cpy) as terminal ligands and pyrazine-d(4) (d(4)-pz), 2,5-dimethylpyrazine (dmpz), 2-methylpyrazine (mpz), and 2-chloropyrazine (clpz) as bridging ligands were prepared. The carbonyl stretching frequency, nu(CO), was used as a probe for infrared spectroelectrochemical measurements. In the neutral and doubly reduced states, a single band was observed for each of the dimers, with a shift in frequency due to the oxidation state of the triruthenium clusters. In the singly reduced state, a range of nu(CO) line shapes was observed, depending on the nature of the ligands, from two bands centered at the frequencies of the bands of the neutral and doubly reduced species to one broad band at the average of these two frequencies. By synthesizing new combinations of bridging and ancillary ligands, electronic communication between two bridged triruthenium clusters was effectively tuned, and electron-transfer rates were estimated by IR spectral line-shape analysis. In dimers bridged by the asymmetric ligand mpz, it was possible through selective isotope labeling of one CO ligand to observe "mixed-valence isomers," the two alternate charge distributions of a mixed-valence complex.

Influence of neutral ligands on the structures of silver(I) sulfonates.

This article represents a systematical examination of the structures of silver(I) sulfonates incorporating neutral ligands. To survey the influence of the properties of neutral ligands on the structures of silver(I) sulfonates, three kinds of sulfonate anions (L1=1-naphthalenesulfonate, L2=p-toluenesulfonate, and L3=1, 3, 6, 8-pyrenetetrasulfonate) and three kinds of neutral ligands (pyrazine, Pyr, a divergent bidentate ligand; hexamethylenetetramine, hmt, a divergent tetradentate ligand; and beta-picoline, Pic, a monodentate ligand) were selected for study, and five novel silver(I) sulfonates containing neutral ligands have been synthesized: [Ag(L1)(Pyr)].H2O, Ag(L2)(Pyr), Ag4(L3)(Pyr)4(H2O)2, [Ag(L1)(hmt)].H2O, and Ag(L1)(Pic)2. The crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and these compounds show a variety of structures with different dimensionalities. Moreover, the luminescent properties of compounds and are also discussed.

Tetra-2,3-pyrazinoporphyrazines with externally appended pyridine rings. 3. A new highly electron-deficient octacationic macrocycle: tetrakis-2,3-[5,6-di{2-(N-methyl)pyridiniumyl}pyrazino]porphyrazine, [(2-Mepy)8TPyzPzH(2)]8+.

A new octacationic macrocycle, tetrakis-2,3-[5,6-di{2-(N-methyl)pyridiniumyl}pyrazino]porphyrazine, was obtained in its hydrated form as the water-soluble iodide salt. This compound, abbreviated as [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPzH(2)](I(8)).8H(2)O (2-Mepy = 2(N-methyl)pyridiniumyl moiety), was obtained by demetalation of the corresponding Mg(II) complex, [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPzMg(H(2)O)](I(8)).5H(2)O, which in turn was prepared from its corresponding neutral hydrated species tetrakis-2,3-[5,6-di(2-pyridyl)pyrazino]porphyrazinato(monoaquo)magnesium(II), [Py(8)TPyzPzMg(H(2)O)].4H(2)O, by reaction with CH(3)I in N,N-dimethylformamide. The quaternization reactions by using CH(3)I or methyl p-toluenesulfonate were also conducted on the monomeric precursor 2,3-dicyano-5,6-di(2-pyridyl)-1,4-pyrazine, [(CN)(2)Py(2)Pyz], with formation of the monoquaternized ion [(CN)(2)Py(2-Mepy)Pyz](+) neutralized by iodide and p-toluenesulfonate anions. Single-crystal X-ray work allowed elucidation of the structure of the two salt-like species. The diquaternized ion [(CN)(2)(2-Mepy)(2)Pyz](2+) could also be obtained as a p-toluenesulfonate salt, but attempts at direct macrocyclization of this dicationic species were unsuccessful. The iodide salt [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPzH(2)](I(8)).8H(2)O is water-soluble, with different solubilities depending on the range of pH explored. It was established that the macrocycle [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPzH(2)](8+) undergoes facile deprotonation and behaves as a strong acid. Aggregation phenomena are observed for both the octacation [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPzH(2)](8+) and its corresponding centrally deprotonated species [(2-Mepy)(8)TPyzPz](6+). Nevertheless, both cationic moieties exist in their monomeric form under specific experimental conditions. UV-visible monitored titrations with NaOH provide information about the type of protonation/deprotonation equilibria which are complicated by the occurrence of aggregation phenomena.

Crystal data are as follows: trigonal, space group R3c, a = 18.4070(14) angstroms, c = 22.544(3) angstroms, gamma = 120 degrees, and Z = 6 for 1; orthorhombic, space group Pccn, a = 16.599(2) angstroms, b = 20.470(3) angstroms, c = 14.3757(18) angstroms, and Z = 4 for 2; triclinic, space group P1, a = 10.667(2) angstroms, b = 11.147(2) angstroms, c = 20.207(4) angstroms, alpha = 90.983(4) degrees, beta = 108.128(3) degrees, gamma = 92.150(4) degrees, and Z = 2 for 3; orthorhombic, space group Pccn, a = 16.450(3) angstroms, b = 20.170(4) angstroms, c = 14.244(3) angstroms, and Z = 4 for 4; and rhombohedral, space group R32, a = 18.2047(13) angstroms, c = 23.637(3) angstroms, gamma = 120 degrees, and Z = 6 for 5. Their structural differences were investigated using crystal structure analysis, revealing that the influence of steric hindrance of organic ligand on the structures of Keggin-based coordination polymers is realized through changing the number of metal-organic units surrounding the POM anion.

Construction of [(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3]-based supramolecular compounds from preformed incomplete cubane-like clusters [PPh4][(eta5-C5Me5)WS3(CuX)3] (X = CN, Br).

Approaches to the assembly of (eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3-based supramolecular compounds from two preformed incomplete cubane-like clusters [PPh4][(eta5-C5Me5)WS3(CuX)3] (X = CN, 1a; X = Br, 1b) have been investigated. Treatment of 1a with LiBr/1,4-pyrazine (1,4-pyz), pyridine (py), LiCl/py, or 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy) and treatment of 1b with 4,4'-bipy gave rise to a new set of W/Cu/S cluster-based compounds, [Li[((eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(mu3-Br))2(mu-CN)3].C6H6]infinity (2), [(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(mu-CN)2(py)]infinity (3), [[PPh4][(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(mu3-Cl)(mu-CN)(CN)].py]infinity (4), [PPh4]2[(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(CN)2]2(mu-CN)2.(4,4'-bipy) (5), and [[(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3Br(mu-Br)(4,4'-bipy)].Et2O]infinity (6). The structures of 2-6 have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Compound 2 displays a 1D ladder-shaped chain structure built of square-like [[(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(mu3-Br)(mu-CN)]4](mu-CN)2(2-) anions via two pairs of Cu-mu-CN-Cu bridges. Compound 3 consists of a single 3D diamond-like network in which each (eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3 unit, serving as a tetrahedral node, interconnects with four other nearby units through Cu-mu-CN-Cu bridges. Compound 4 contains a 1D zigzag chain array made of cubane-like [(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3(mu3-Cl)(mu-CN)(CN)]- anions linked by a couple of Cu-mu-CN-Cu bridges. Compound 5 contains a dimeric structure in which the two incomplete cubane-like [(eta5-C5Me5)WS3(CuCN)2(mu-CN)]- anions are strongly held together via a pair of Cu-mu-CN-Cu bridges. Compound 6 contains a 2D brick-wall layer structure in which dimers of [(eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3Br(4,4'-bipy)]2 are interconnected via four Cu-mu-Br-Cu bridges. The successful construction of (eta5-C5Me5)WS3Cu3-based supramolecular compounds 2-6 from the geometry-fixed clusters 1a and 1b may expand the scope of the rational design and construction of cluster-based supramolecular assemblies.

A multifunctional tetrametallic Ru-Pt supramolecular complex exhibiting both DNA binding and photocleavage.

A new tetrametallic supramolecular complex, [{(bpy)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(dpp)PtCl2](PF6)6 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, dpp = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine), has been prepared and characterized. This supramolecular assembly is multifunctional, forming coordinate covalent bonds to DNA through its cis-PtCl2 moiety and photocleaving DNA through its Ru polypyridine chromophores. Electronic absorption spectroscopy shows ligand-based pi-->pi* transitions in the UV with Ru-based metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions throughout much of the visible. The Ru-->dpp CT transitions center at 542 nm (eta = 35 000 M-1 cm-1). This complex has a HOMO localized on peripheral Ru with E(1/2)oxd = 1.58 V vs Ag/AgCl, and a LUMO based on the mu-dpp connecting Ru and Pt, E(1/2)red = -0.40 V. Gel electrophoresis analysis shows the tetrametallic coordinates to pUC18 DNA and, when excited with visible light, cleaves DNA through an oxygen-mediated pathway.

Relevance of the ligand exchange rate and mechanism of fac-[(CO)3M(H2O)3]+ (M = Mn, Tc, Re) complexes for new radiopharmaceuticals.

The water exchange process on fac-[(CO)3Mn(H2O)3]+ and fac-[(CO)3Tc(H2O)3]+ was kinetically investigated by 17O NMR as a function of the acidity, temperature, and pressure. Up to pH 6.3 and 4.4, respectively, the exchange rate is not affected by the acidity, thus demonstrating that the contribution of the monohydroxo species fac-[(CO)3M(OH)(H2O)2] is not significant, which correlates well with a higher pKa for these complexes compared to the homologue fac-[(CO)3Re(H2O)3]+ complex. The water exchange rate K298ex/s(-1) (DeltaHex double dagger/kJ mol(-1); DeltaSex double dagger/J mol(-1) K(-1); DeltaV double dagger/cm3 mol-1) decreases down group 7 from Mn to Tc and Re: 23 (72.5; +24.4; +7.1) > 0.49 (78.3; +11.7; +3.8) > 5.4 x 10(-3) (90.3; +14.5; -). For the Mn complex only, an O exchange on the carbonyl ligand could be measured (K338co = 4.3 x 10(-6) s(-1)), which is several orders of magnitude slower than the water exchange. In the case of the Tc complex, the coupling between 17O (I = 5/2) and 99Tc (I = 9/2) nuclear spins has been observed (1J99Tc,17O = 80 +/- 5 Hz). The substitution of water in fac-[(CO)3M(H2O)3]+ by dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is slightly faster than that by CH3CN: 3 times faster for Mn, 1.5 times faster for Tc, and 1.2 times faster for Re. The pressure dependence behavior is different for Mn and Re. For Mn, the change in volume to reach the transition state is always clearly positive (water exchange, CH3CN, DMS), indicating an Id mechanism. In the case of Re, an Id/Ia changeover is assigned on the basis of reaction profiles with a strong volume maximum for pyrazine and a minimum for DMS as the entering ligand.

A new approach to functionalize an organic compound through the influence of metal bis(dithiolene) complexes leading to ion-pair compounds exhibiting strong emission at room temperature in the visible region.

The facile oxidation of 6,12-dihydrodipyrido [1,2-alpha1',2'-d] pyrazidinium (DDP2+ = [C12H12N2]2+) chloride to cyclic quaternary ammonium monocation, 12-oxo-9H-dipyrido[1,2-alpha;1',2'-d]pyrazin-5-ium (ODP1+ = [C12H9N2O]1+) is achieved when it reacts with [M(mnt)2]2- (M=Ni2+ and Cu2+) resulting in the formation of the ion pair compounds [ODP]2[Ni(mnt)2] (1) and [ODP]2[Cu(mnt)2] (2), respectively (see Scheme 1 for the structures of [ODP]1+ and [DDP]2+). The nickel complex 1 exhibits intense emission at room temperature in the visible region, whereas, in the case of copper analogue 2, the emission gets quenched. The oxo cation ODP (known to be an unstable species and never characterized unequivocally before) is stabilized in 1 and 2 by cation-anion interactions.

Construction of polyoxometalates-based coordination polymers through direct incorporation between polyoxometalates and the voids in a 2D network.

A series of polyoxometalates (POMs)-based coordination polymers, namely, {[Cu(2,3-Me2pz)(2,5-Me2pz)0.5]4(SiW12O40)(2,5-Me2pz)}n (2,3-Me2pz = 2,3-dimethylpyrazine; 2,5-Me2pz = 2,5-dimethylpyrazine; 1), {[Cu2(4,4'-bipy)4(H2O)4](SiW12O40)(H2O)18}n (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine; 2), {[Cu(2-Mepz)1.5]3(PMo12O40)(H2O)3.5}n (2-Mepz = 2-methylpyrazine; 3), {[Ag(2,3-Me2pz)1.5]4(SiW12O40}n (4), {[Cu(pz)1.5]4(SiW12O40)(H2O)3}n (pz = pyrazine; 5), {[Cu(2,3-Me2pz)1.5]4(SiW12O40)}n (6), {[Cu(4,4'-bipy)1.75]4(SiW12O40)(H2O)2}n (7), and {[Cu2(4,4'-bipy)4(H2O)4](SiW12O40)(4,4'-bipy)2(H2O)4}n (8), were synthesized through direct incorporation between POMs and the voids of the 2D network. Crystal structural analysis reveals that the relationship between the size of the void of the 2D network and that of POMs is of key importance for successful synthesis of POMs-based open metal-organic frameworks. Guest replacement shows that the pore size of the framework constructed through direct incorporation between POMs and the voids of the 2D network is very sensitive to guest molecules.

A Tetranuclear Ruthenium(II) Complex Containing both Electron-Rich and Electron-Poor Bridging Ligands. Absorption Spectrum, Luminescence, Redox Behavior, and Intercomponent Energy Transfer.

The first luminescent and redox active multinuclear Ru(II) compound containing both electron-poor (2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine, 2,3-dpp) and electron-rich (3,5-bis(pyridyn-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, Hbpt) polypyridine bridging ligands has been synthesized. The novel compound is [(bpy)(2)Ru(&mgr;-bpt)Ru{(&mgr;-2,3-dpp)Ru(bpy)(2)}(2)](7+) (1; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Its absorption spectrum, luminescence properties, and redox behavior have been studied and are compared with the properties of the parent complexes [Ru{(&mgr;-2,3-dpp)Ru(bpy)(2)}(3)](8+) (2) and [(bpy)(2)Ru(&mgr;-bpt)Ru(bpy)(2)](3+) (3). The absorption spectrum of 1 is dominated by ligand-centered bands in the UV region and by metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands in the visible region. Excited states and oxidation and reduction processes are localized in specific sites of the multicomponent structure. However, perturbations of each component on the redox and excited states of the others, as well as electronic interactions between the chromophores, can be observed. Intercomponent energy transfer from the upper-lying (&mgr;-bpt)(bpy)Ru-->bpy CT excited state of the Ru(bpy)(2)(&mgr;-bpt)(+) component to the lower-lying (bpy)(2)Ru-->&mgr;-2,3-dpp CT excited state of the Ru(bpy)(2)(&mgr;-2,3-dpp)(2+) subunit(s) is efficient in 1 in fluid solution at room temperature, whereas this process is not observed in a rigid matrix at 77 K. A two-step energy transfer mechanism is proposed to explain the photophysical properties of the new compound.

Reactions of Fe(CN)(5)L(3-) (L = 4-aminopyridine (4-ampy), pyridine (py), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), and pyrazine (pz)) with peroxydisulfate, Fe(CN)(5)L(3-) + S(2)O(8)(2-) right harpoon over left harpoon Fe(CN)(5)L(2-) + SO(4)(-) + SO(4)(2-), have been found to follow an outer-sphere electron transfer mechanism. The specific rate constants of oxidation are 1.45 +/- 0.01, (9.00 +/- 0.02) x 10(-2), (5.60 +/- 0.01) x 10(-2), and (2.89 +/- 0.01) x 10(-2) M(-1) s(-1), for L = 4-ampy, py, 4,4'-bpy, and pz, respectively, at &mgr; = 0.50 M LiClO(4), T = 25 degrees C, pH = 4.4-8.8. The rate constants of oxidation for the corresponding Ru(NH(3))(5)L(2+) complexes were also measured and were found to be faster than those of Fe(CN)(5)L(3-) complexes by a factor of approximately 10(2) even after the corrections for the differences in reduction potentials and in the charges of the complexes. The difference in reactivity may arise from the hydrogen bonding between peroxydisulfate and the ammonia ligands of Ru(NH(3))(5)L(2+) and nonadiabaticity observed in the Fe(CN)(5)L(3-) complexes.

Electron Transfer. 130. Reductions with Indium(I)(1).

Aqueous solutions of the hypovalent state indium(I) have been prepared by treatment of In(Hg) with silver triflate in acetonitrile, followed by dilution with oxygen-free water. These solutions are stable for over 5 h at 25 degrees C. In(I)(aq) reacts with oxidants of the type [(NH(3))(5)Co(III)(Lig)](2+) (In(I) + 2Co(III) --> In(III) + 2Co(II)), and kinetic profiles are consistent with a two-step sequence proceeding with formation of the metastable state In(II), which reacts rapidly with Co(III). Rate ratios for reductions of halogeno-substituted oxidants point to predominance of halide-bridged paths for the chloro, bromo and iodo complexes. Reductions of carboxylato-substituted derivatives are slow but appear to entail inner-sphere precursors if aided by an O-donor group in a position favorable for chelation. In no case is there evidence for reaction via initial reduction of the ligand (the radical-cation mechanism) although the potential of the In(I,II) couple (-0.40 V) allows this path for carbonyl-substituted oxidants. Reductions by In(I), like those by Eu(II), make no significant use of bridging by heterocyclic donor nitrogen centers in pyridine and pyrazine complexes.
