Global health report. A snapshot of the payer systems, major diseases and workforce trends from around the world.

International trade and travel have rendered political and geographic boundaries irrelevant when it comes to diseases. HIV and SARS are among the more recent examples of deadly viruses that spread swiftly from one continent to the next before international health experts can identify them, much less begin to search for a cure. This snapshot of global health issues looks at payer systems from a cross section of nations, lists the world's eight most infectious diseases and their rate of incidence by region, and pays special attention to the shortage of health care workers, which has reached crisis proportions in many areas and is pitting nation against nation in the competition for qualified staff.

Personal & supportive care services: an international perspective on workforce issues.

Familiehulp, the largest home care organization in Flanders, Belgium, has 40,000 clients and 7,400 employees. Believing its staff is its most valuable capital, Familiehulp has instituted the concept of self-steering teams. The United Kingdom's home care was unregulated until April 2003. A major objective of that country is to get the disabled back to work. In the United States, the average tenure of home care aides for this presenter's agency is eight years. He shares his secrets for recruiting and retaining the best.

Maximizing the dental workforce: implications for a rural state.

Geographic areas with low socioeconomic status may experience status may experience less access to oral health promotion and oral health care. Approximately 40% of the licensed dentists in Mississippi practice in two metropolitan areas, Jackson and the Gulf Coast. As a result, 38 of the 82 counties in Mississippi have 4,000 or more persons per dentist. With minimal incentives attracting dentists to underserved areas, and with little public health intervention providing first-rate care, education, and prevention, promotion of case referrals for oral health care should be implemented. Several states have loosened restrictions on the level of dental hygienist supervision required in order to extend care to populations in need. For the predominantly rural state of Mississippi, less restrictive supervision of dental hygienists might help address the acute problems of poor oral health and access to care issues.
